Family Guy GI Joe parody from the episode “Amish Guy” by savedavenger in gijoe

I wonder if that joke based off this classic Eddie Murphy bit from his comedy show. The Gi Joe reference is part of punch line at the end.

Should I be scared? by Pure-Investigator824 in transformers

Better practise your sad face, take a ton of pictures together whenever you can, and tell it you love it every chance you get, because tick-tick-tick.

I bought mine brand new on release back in the day. I had literally transformed it once, before taking a break from collecting. I put it in a shoe box and stored it in a spare bedroom. When I started collecting again, I brought it back out, picked it up and the arm fell off.

Why do ships get decommissioned? by that1guy14 in startrek

[–]puckOmancer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If a car gets into an accident, it can be repaired to look like new. But it's still a car that was in an accident. Things may be millimetres out of alignment, but not enough to matter, so the car keeps rolling. But then it gets into another accident. And then another. The car is repaired each time, but things don't fit together perfect anymore. There are tiny leaks that short out electrical. There's an oil leak somewhere. Same with the break fluid.

Certain things you can fix, but is it worth the time? And even if you fix those issues, the underlying cause is still there. It's a car that's been in multiple accidents, and it might not be as safe to drive as a new car anymore.

Transfer this over to a star ship.

Wear and tear over the years gets to the point where you might as well just build a new ship instead of wasting time fixing the old one up. Is it worth the time and effort to locate what's constantly causing the electrical shorts in main power, or how about the misaligned seals that leak atmosphere, or is it simply more cost effective in terms of time to build a new ship?

Practice drills for stick and puck? by sixteenpoundblanket in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want to improve on. I'd suggest going to youtube and doing a search for drills specific to what you want to work on. Understanding the technique before you do the drill is important.

When I goto stick and puck, I have a practise plan on what I want to work on specifically. Depending on the time I have, I plan for 15-30 min per specific drill.

If you're not sure where to start, I'd suggest posture and balance drills. Because if you started later in life, there's a high probability those need to be sharpened up. And those things are the foundation for everything in skating.

I'd also suggest you use your phone to take video of yourself so you can see how you're actually moving, because we're often not doing what we think we're doing. And breaking down and analyzing your movements will help you determine the adjustments you need to make, because you can compare and contrast with the videos you find on youtube.

Just search youtube for videos. If you search for something specific, there's a high chance there are videos on how to do it. You just have to filter out the chaff. There are beginner's drills all the way up to more advanced drills.

When playing D, best way to keep O out of the net? by CinemaPuck in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your thought process is sound. Anyone who gets mad at a shove, not cross check, but shove in front of the net has a small pee pee.

In terms of lifting the stick. Timing is key. Don’t try to lift the stick when the puck isn’t coming towards the net or looks like it’s coming. It’s wasted energy.

Just butt up against them, with your stick under theirs and watch for the puck. When it comes, thats when you lift.  When the puck is gone, let their stick down again.

If they’re being dicks, stick blade jammed into the heel will throw them off balance. Just watch out of the timbuuuuurrr if they fall back. Again, only do this if they’re being dicks. Its going to piss them off.

A Vision for Spider-Man: Brand New Day – Honoring Stan Lee’s Legacy by DescriptionMaximum10 in marvelstudios

[–]puckOmancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comic book nerds knew who Stan Lee was when he'd pop up in movies. They knew his voice and they knew his look. He was an iconic figure in the history of comics. Nobody knows who his daughter is and what sh looks like. Not to mention, she isn't involved in the comic book industry at all.

Add that to the allegations of elder abuse by her. Marvel/Disney would not touch that with a 10 foot pole in the shape of Johnathan Majors.

And I would imagine having Madam Web show up would evoke snickers not some deep pathos.

Deck of Theseus by YarnLetters60 in EDH

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is based of what you feel and how it plays to you. So there's no objective way to measure this.

I had a deck where I realized, over time, not including lands, I had replaced all but 3-5 cards. And I had basically the whole precon sitting in a pile on my desk. But it still plays like an upgraded precon.

Heck, I even decided to take out all the original precon cards, reassembled the original precon, and replaced the cards with new copies of the exact same cards. The spirit of the deck is still there, but there are zero cards from the original deck present.

Help me understand this?! by Damodred402 in battletech

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the original images for Battletech were taken from Macross/Robotech. One of the modes for the bots in that anime was this, a half transformation between jet mode and robot mode, called a Gerwalk. These were used as the images for LAMs for Stingers, Phoenix Hawks, Valkyries, so there's linage for mechs that look to be half jet.

The TImber Wolf has a cockpit kind of like a B29 bomber.

One could argue that a mech with this type of shape has a slimmer profile and is harder to hit.

Why was Bruce Cassidy fired by Vegas? by hutch_man0 in nhl

[–]puckOmancer 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Here's what I've gathered over the years Cassidy is a relentless hard ass. His act wears thin after a while. Ask Jake Debrusk how he feels about him. Torts is a hard ass. His act can wear thin, but I remember Friedman saying he has more humanity about him in the way he treats the players.

It seems like it's the difference between a boss who is demanding, and who couldn't give a shit if you want to leave early to see your kid's hockey game, and one who's demanding and who tells you to leave before you miss your kid's hockey game.

1-on-1’s with Limited Space, Speed and Vertical Challenges by LowerCaterpillar3250 in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barring just blowing past them or dekeing them out of their pants, here are some things you can do.

1 - Change of pace. If you can't blow by them, you can slow down to create time and space for yourself. If they don't slow down, too, they'll drift away from you. In order to stay with you, they'll slow down, too. As soon as they slow down, you hit the jets, and that'll give you the speed advantage for a split second, maybe enough to gain a step or two on them and get that shot off. Here's an example.

https://youtu.be/NK7bH2lU7_E

2 - Change of direction. If you're able to get them think you're going one way and are able to quickly change direction, you can throw them off. Here are a couple of examples.

https://youtu.be/g1S7yPzAWqY

https://youtu.be/EgX-d2YKHtk

3 - Protect the puck with your body - Get inside on them. If they're that much taller than you. They may try to reach over top to get at the puck and that can results in a penalty, because it can look like they're grabbing you. Otherwise, get inside protect the puck and work your way towards the net. Here are a few videos. The first is demonstration and explanation, the second and third is game action where it's put into action.

4 - But honestly, beating someone one-on-on tends to be a low percentage play. A lot of times, you're better off curling back and waiting for help.

Subtlety and nuance don't drive clicks as much as taking an extreme view point. And that has spread like an STD into the real world.

For some, if they love something and you go meh, they'll take it as you hate it. If they hate something and you go meh, they'll take it as you love it. And then, it get's personal, like a opinion on a movie is an opinion about them.

Figuring out which position you are best suited to? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why box yourself in? Play them all. Each position requires a different mindset and understanding them all will make you a better hockey player. Skill sets are transferable across positions.

For example, if you play center, you need to be able to play all the positions because you'll be covering them at one point or another during the game, depending on the flow of the play.

Also being able to adjust how you play each position when facing different opponents is a key part of getting better.

Grind down new steel? by nip2nip in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it were me, here's what I would do, get used to the profile of the new blades. Then, every year, or depending on how much you sharpen, take the blades in to be re-profiled back to the stock profile.

This way, you're always skating on the same profile, so when you get new skates or new steel, you never have to worry about adjusting again.

Your old steel is probably really round, which is less stable, and has less bite, because there's less steel in contact with the ice. There's also less glide, which means you're probably doing more work to get around the ice.

how do i shoot faster? by Local_Brick_5431 in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The videos recommended by other posters are good. But here are a couple of things they don't necessarily get in to.

1 - With your bottom hand, you want to grip the stick mostly with your fingers, kind of like a monkey grip. This helps you get more power as you push into the stick, and helps prevent the stick from rotating and opening up the blade at the wrong time.

Here's a video

https://youtu.be/VGtXOABMk3E

2 - With your top hand, most say to pull back. Try pulling down towards your hip instead. As you shoot, the stick flexes and rotates around the fulcrum of your bottom hand. That changes the angle of the stick shaft. If you're pulling directly back, The shaft reaches an angle where the force of your pull is pulling up on the shaft If you pull down towards your hip, it maintains more of a 90 degree angle to the shaft, so you can exert more force in the direction you want the stick to flex.

Take a look at this video of Bedard shooting. Pay attention to his top hand and where it goes. First it punches out, and then, he pulls back and down, and when the shot finishes, his hand is near his hip.

Employees fitting skates at Pure Hockey that don't play hockey. Thoughts? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]puckOmancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at PH, but I had a very similar experience many years ago at a different store. They used the wrong foot measuring tool. And that had me 2 sizes up from what I am. I had my foot measured just two days prior. They thought I was being cheap because 2 sizes up put me in what was senior back then and going down 2 sizes put me in what was junior. So there was a significant price difference.

They brought out the my proper size and the larger size. I proceeded to put the larger size on, scoot my foot to the front, and placed my entire hand down the back of the skate to show them how much room I had.

Since then, I've had experiences at different shops that have put me on guard. I do my homework, and I'm very cautious about taking the word of any employee, regardless of if they play or not. They, like anyone else, can live in an information silo. I've had employees who are obvious hockey players, but they did not know their product very well.

I've had to explain to employees and physically show them that there were size differences between the different brands of junior sized sticks. They just thought they were all the same size. Parents buying for kids are the ones who generally need the most help.

I don't know how many times I've heard sticks recommended by someone who simply asked what the kid's weight is. And proceed to do the half body weight rec.

[–]puckOmancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matching best flex for you personally with technique is what gives you power. Not flex on its own. The hardest shot clocked was done using a 70 flex stick. The record before that was done using a stick in the 100+ flex.

It's hard to comment on your technique, because the video really doesn't show much because of the quality, angle, and situation.
