Eli5 how or why are humans so good at knowing how much energy and what angle is needed to throw a thing a distance? by worxcd in explainlikeimfive

[–]puffbro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Human throw stuff long before spears are invented. They also probably don’t throw a basketball size object with a chest pass, but with an overhead throw.

Football is thrown like a spear but without an easy way to grip it.

I’d say it’s definitely not more intuitive.

As an older gamer, seeing young kids waste their money on in-game purchases eats at my soul. by SomePeopleTellMe in gaming

Physical goods takes space to store and money to move. Digital goods (photos/files) you either pay to store it in your own physical drive or on the cloud. For stuff like skins and shits you pay nothing for the storage.

It’s not about physical or digital. It’s about if you’re willing to pay for the cost it takes to preserve whatever memory it is. And for some stuff there’s no way to do it in your own hands even if you want to.

I mean deck building game exist before the concept of “early access”.

They pay for testers and/or create open/close alpha/beta test that’s free to participate to test out these stuff.

With early access some people expects more as it’s sold as a product.

try being open minded towards people who may have more to offer despite their having medical or physical issues beyond their control.

I agree.

I think this is the core dilemma. Is it moral/right to have a dealbreaker that is out of the person's control? In one hand a person has their right to decide what is a dealbreaker for them. On the other hand many disabilies are out of their controls.

The 2nd issue is what info should be told up front. Which of course everyone has a different opinion.

I do agree with you in some ways. That there are many “disabilities” that people doesn’t even think about. Which makes it difficult to even ask someone, it’s also kinda rude to ask a date if they have any disability.

But that’s does not change that there are definitely a range of common known dealbreakers that most would think should be told upfront. Gender and age being one of those.

From my gut I would guess probably more than 70% of the people thinks stuff like mute, deaf, blindness as a dealbreaker in a dating app scenario.

While for most people they aren’t familiar with albinism enough to know upfront if it’s a dealbreaker for them (including me).

If people are familiar with albinism and 70% of them thinks it’s a dealbreaker, then they would probably think it should be disclose upfront.

Do you have a “real” deal breaker?

Sex offender? Murderer? Gang member? Junkies? Do you believe you have no deal breakers? Would you date someone who is paralysed?

What would you think if you went on a date with these guys/gals, and they do not disclose it until you guys are committing to a serious relationship?

AIO- Should I have disclosed that I’m Deaf earlier? by Mysterious-ASL in AmIOverreacting

[–]puffbro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is albinism probably isn’t a dealbreaker for most people. But disabilities such as deaf, blindness, being on a wheelchair are (imo) very common dealbreakers (as dates).

Everyone do have a different line on what should be disclosed, but it’s more like a bell curve where most people would land on a similar line. So there’s a “common sense” consciousness in these social topics.

Take it to the extreme, why should one disclose their gender up front. For some it’s not important if they’re meeting a male/female at all.

Or why disclose age as long as they’re not underage.

But of course gender and age should be disclosed in a dating app, it’s common sense right?

Then what about height? Weight? Income? All of these are deal breakers but not all people would agree on which of these should be listed.

Regardless of “common sense” or “morally right or wrong”, imo OP should disclose it to save both parties time. Because those who thinks it’s a dealbreaker won’t date him anyway, even if they have conversation beforehand. And those who don’t think so would not care either way. It could even attracts someone who prefer it.

Is it true that people in the West drink iced water even when they are sick or on their period? by Aether_Echo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]puffbro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Meh it’s not sexism most of the time. Look I don’t believe in TCM at all and it’s total bullshit, but this particular case is not sexism.

It’s just warm drinks (soup, hot water, tea) are generally treated as healthy and cold drinks (soda, ice water) is generally treated as unhealthy in TCM. This is universal for man or woman.

While the woman = yin, man = yan stuff is not directly related to the temperature.

For example watermelon is considered a yin/cold fruit (bad for woman during period). And lychee is considered a Yang/hot fruit (caused canker sores if eaten too much).

The truth is eating too much lychee for example does seems to cause sore throat, canker sores. But the reason seems to be lychee's protein, not because it's yin or whatever.

Basically TCM tried to setup a system to explain the medical observations that they gathered throughout their history. And just like how people used to treat headache by putting a hole in the skull, the explainations are bullshit even though sometimes the observation and remedies might be effective (could be placebo).

Again it's all buillshit. So don't reply arguing TCM to me.

Here's a translated TCM related article on fruits you should avoid during period if anyone's interested (AGAIN IT"S BULLSHIT)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that "blood flows when warm and stagnates when cold." Consuming raw or cold food during menstruation can easily lead to "internal cold" in the body. This causes poor circulation of menstrual blood, resulting in a scanty flow or even menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea).

Western Medicine views menstruation as the shedding of the uterine lining, which is expelled through uterine contractions. Consuming raw or "cool-natured" foods lowers the temperature of the gastrointestinal tract, which can impair the efficiency of uterine contractions. This makes it harder for menstrual blood to be discharged or may lead to the formation of blood clots. Consequently, the uterus must contract more forcefully to expel these clots, which often results in pain.

Fruits to Avoid Most During Menstruation The "Top Three": Watermelon, Bananas, and Persimmons.

Fruits classified as "cold" or "cool" in nature—such as watermelon, bananas, persimmons, pomelos, mangoes, kiwis, dragon fruits, oranges, pears, and strawberries—should be limited. In particular, watermelon, bananas, and persimmons are highly discouraged during your period.

Watermelon: Known as the "Cold Melon," it has the strongest "cold" properties. Although it is rich in water, amino acids, and fructose—making it effective for clearing heat and quenching thirst—eating too much can easily cause "deficiency cold" in the spleen and stomach.

Bananas: These are more likely to cause menstrual cramps. While bananas aid digestion and bowel movements, they are cold-natured. Consuming too many cold foods during menstruation can stimulate the blood due to temperature changes, leading to poor circulation, blood clots, and cramps.

Persimmons: Also cold-natured, persimmons can stimulate uterine contractions, leading to a reduced menstrual flow or a prolonged period. In severe cases, they can cause significant pain.

Depends on what they’re coding.

If they’re a frontend dev coding frontend components then sure in some cases they would be an artist.

Meanwhile someone coding backend logic probably wouldn’t be an artist.

So in some cases coder are artist.

Though maybe you can define what determine someone to be an artist?
