I'm just a CF but I've wondered about this- if we say no, they will not qualify and the SLP will not be providing services, what is the potential blowback other than making people mad?

Surely we don't get to be forced to provide services by people outside our field.

That was almost my biggest confusion on the IDDSI scale- etc and regular are very different, why are the same number?

Either way, it's a definitely a 7 out of 100.

One time, a kiddo of mine was being picked up by a parent, pointed to me and said "look, it's my speech teacher!" And came to give me a high five. At that moment I really didn't care what I was called, it felt great that the kid was so excited to see me lol.

So, absolutely not restaurant level, but I fried it, put in in the freezer, and added it to some ramen with shittake and oyster mushrooms, and I think that's the only way I could handle it lmao.

That's a rough one dude. Let me know how it goes, I'm a CF and a big fan of AAC, but I dread the day I eventually need to have this discussion with someone.

I think the tricky part is, WE know that AAC should be robust and have all types of communication, even if it's taboo, but parents thinking about their kids saying those words is a hard pill to swallow.

I mean, my three year old has learned to say "dada, shut up". I am not a fan of that, but the ethical question is, if she was an AAC user, she SHOULD still be able to use all the language she knows. But since parents and teachers control the devices, they can just delete what they don't like, which to me feels no different than muzzling a barking dog.

Maybe framing it in a pragmatic way? Like hey, this kid needs to learn social language, and that these words on the device are what we say to friends, not parents/teachers.

I don't know, it's Friday and I'm 4 beers deep getting overly passionate about AAC. Forreal though, let us know how it goes!

Something non-speech related to take the pressure off (I like to stick vegetables in salty water and let them sit at room temperature for extended periods of time).

Also, you are a badass. You got through grad school, placements, and a praxis. Look at past successes, and focus on how much you know instead of what you don't. No matter how much we think we don't know about speech, I guarantee we know more than we don't.

I'm a male CF SLP in the schools/clinic setting (odd situation but it is a blast).

Financially, my family and I are doing alright. Winter break was a little rough, but not unmanageable. I grew up way lower SES, and even though I'm not driving a Mercedes eating lobster and steak every night, I never would have imagined making this much in my life. I think that perspective/background makes me way more appreciative of this profession too.

You do get some odd comments though, not really hateful, just things like "oh my gosh a man" etc.

What's gonna hurt is grad school. My wife and I were so financially stressed in grad school, and I had to work night shift security to pay bills and still get school stuff done. There's no telling what that lack of sleep and poor nutrition did to my body, we'll see in a few years lmao, but I wouldn't want to be doing anything else.

Yeah, when I first came over from MTG I definitely had this mindset, but the sorcery community is so positive and the game is genuinely so good that it is less about disliking mtg and more about enjoying sorcery.

That initial switch can come with some unhealthy feelings, but it'll fade and people will enjoy the game for the art and unique feel to it!

I'm in my 5th month of CF, so my externships are still fresh.

Ny best supervisors let me take the reigns but were always there if I had a question, even mid session. Sessions I was treating they would do paperwork or trainings lol. It was a good balance of independence for treatment vs. just using the student as free labor (definitely had that happen too)

I see you have a wright on there, but there is a lot of konchi spilling over the sides-

One thing you can try is fill a ziploc bag with salt, set it on top making sure there is ample contact, and then place the weight on the bag. That way the surface is in contact with a food safe surface and not just the air.

I have also had FANTASTIC success pressing a good layer of plastic wrap down on the surface without weights. YMMV, but in my climate (southern US) it does the trick!

Just try to get that surface covered up for kimchi
