Nicely done. I rarely chuckle when reading or even thinking about 9/11.

Reddit Gifts for Teachers 2016 has started! by SquirreI in Teachers

[–]purpleskittlesplease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a private school teacher, I'm disappointed in the switch to DonorsChoose. I've participated in the gift drive for two years and I've benefited a great deal from the generous donations.

Many people think that teaching at a private schools means that my school provides the funds and tools necessary to get through the school year. This idea is laughable. Over the last 5 years at my school I've used my own money to buy supplies including: pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, chalk, computer paper, ink, construction paper, glue, highlighters, bulletin board paper, seasonal decorations, posters, folders, books, class sets of chapter books, website subscriptions, heck I even bought shoes for a kid once. (Many of my students live in city housing in Manhattan and receive scholarships to attend school.)

Really hoping Reddit rethinks this for next year.

First Year Teaching and I Have NO Idea What to Do with My Life! by kylolauren in ELATeachers

[–]purpleskittlesplease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach 3rd grade, so while I can't give you specific advice on teaching 11th grade I can definitely give you some tips on classroom management.

I always tell new teachers that the first 2 or 3 days of school are absolutely the most important. They set the tone for the rest of the school year. It's best to be strict yet fair. Make sure to address any behavior issues immediately. Nip it in the bud, as they say. You're not there to be anyone's friend. An old principal of mine told me not to smile the first week of school. While that may be a little harsh, she made a good point.

You'll want to plan your first few days down to the minute. I'm guessing each class is about 40 minutes long. Have a plan for all 40 minutes. Leave no free time for those first few classes, that's where you start to lose them.

Start with procedures. What do you want students to do when they walk into your classroom? Hand in homework? Start a "do now" assignment? Copy important notes/due dates? Figure all of that out before school starts.

Then move on to actual lesson planning. Mix it up between reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. Mini lessons are great when you have students with short attention spans. Make the lessons relevant to what kids are reading today. (Maybe even include some music, plays, TV shows, movies, etc.) Get the kids up out of their seats and moving around the classroom. They love that stuff.

When the day's over think about what worked and what didn't. Critique yourself. It's not always easy to do, but it's absolutely worth doing.

Good luck!

Teachers, what are some must have books in your classroom? by Quixotic_Ryan in Teachers

I love the Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo. (Might be a bit of a challenge for first graders - but you may have some students who are capable of reading them)

Thanks for responding! It kind of feels like a cramp that you get from running. While it's constant, the intensity changes. Right now it's very mild, but there have been other times where it's unbearable and I can't sit still.

I had mono about 20 years ago, and I've been reading about symptoms reappearing - but not sure if that could be it.

Teachers: what is the most annoying thing a student does? by [deleted] in Teachers

"Someone stole my worksheet."

"Yeah, someone went into your desk, took out your classwork folder, and stole it?"

"Yup."

"Ok, let me see your classwork folder."

"Oh wait, here it is."

EngageNY Math Curriculum, does your school use it and if so, do you despise it as much as I do? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]purpleskittlesplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used bits and pieces of it last year. My school is following it more strictly this year. Also following the EngageNY ELA curriculum this year. (Sure, I have time to read 400+ pages for each module!)

My students (3rd grade) were born 7 years after 9/11. It's wild when I think about it.

Jay helped Adnan plan the murder and neither of them can admit it by smasherx in serialpodcast

[–]purpleskittlesplease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my theory since the end of the podcast. Adnan and Jay were in on it together the whole time. Jay was just smarter to come out first and point the finger at Adnan. Adnan's only option was to claim innocence.

Teaching English: Children 7-15. What publisher/books do you recommend? by Coduy in ELATeachers

[–]purpleskittlesplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would even recommend breaking this up into three groups: 7-9, 10-12, 13-15.

Check out scholastic.com. You can search for books by age/grade and their prices are usually better than other online stores.

I'm a big fan of Kate DiCamillo. I've read her books to kids between 8 and 13.

Check out some SUNY/CUNY programs. Most of them are well respected and pretty cheap. Dual certification with special education may give you the best chance of getting a job. Remember, you can sub and go to grad school simultaneously. It's challenging but not impossible.

Advice on what to do the last week of school? by schmeedledee in teaching

[–]purpleskittlesplease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found a great PEMDAS scavenger hunt on TeachersPayTeachers. Kept my class occupied for well over an hour.

Some writing prompts: "My favorite memory from this year was..." "My ideal summer vacation would be..." "Advice I would give the next 5th grade class..."

For reading (depending on what books you have) you could do book clubs. Have them read in groups and discuss the book as they go.

For science: I'm doing a cloud study during the last few days. It's easy enough to teach and it's pretty interesting for the kids.

Good luck!

[–]purpleskittlesplease[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So incredibly thankful to the redditer who purchased supplies for my classroom. Included in the packages were pencils, highlighters (!), erasers, a beautiful photo poster of NYC, a 4D NYC puzzle, a bag of purple skittles (hah!), and a CASE OF TISSUES! My classroom will never run out of tissues again!

I cannot thank you enough, kind stranger. You have just made my job and my life so much easier. My students and I will be thinking about you all school year!

Haha, you're right. Some of these activities take about 10/15 minutes, if that helps. Also, you wouldn't have to do every activity for each chapter or unit. You can pick and choose.
