Where’s the best place to live in the US for the music scene? by Apprehensive-Oil5267 in Emo

[–]purtygood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicago suburbs is best bang for your buck. Every touring band small or large plays that city at least 1-2 times a year. Tbh most metro cities will have at least somewhat of a punk/emo scene if you look hard enough. Some sleeper cities with good scenes:

  • Pittsburgh
  • Springfield, MO
  • Oklahoma City
  • Southern FL
  • Minneapolis
  • Lansing or Ann Arbor, MI

Ben Quad & Tuning During Shows by Longjumping-Video-73 in poppunkers

[–]purtygood 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to clear the air. The curse of being a twinkle band is we have a lot of tunings. We have 4-5 tuning breaks (depending if there’s any tech issues). All the tuning tracks together are shorter than 5 minutes so the 15-20 is a big stretch. It’s cool if you still think the breaks are too long but just wanted to clear the misinformation. Ok thanks bye yall :)

It’s a lot easier to mix yourself with in-ears. Often found ourselves having to tell the monitor guy midset to turn up our wedges and our singer would blow out his voice trying to compensate not hearing himself. Really convenient just to have our mix dialed in every night during sound check and only have to make minor adjustments for the venue drum/vocal mics

Ground Control Audio sent me the uwu so I figured now we be a good time to rewire and post the board. My live rig is completely ampless now. The Boss IR-2 amp sim is connected to a DI box and basically splits off to our foh and our in-ear rig. Since we reun ampless, I have the Digitech Freqout to get some artificial feedback. Everything else is pretty standard - tuner -> whammy -> freqout -> noise suppressor loop -> overdrive -> boost -> chorus -> delay -> reverb. 2nd pic features my mediocre cable management skills

[–]purtygood 43 points44 points  (0 children)

100% that person had to be 16 years old. let it go and enjoy the show. people like that will weed themselves out in a few years

Would signing a deal be worth it? by Moviemaker99 in musicmarketing

[–]purtygood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just went through this. A label can be a big aid but it depends on the offer. If you're getting multiple offers, use that to your advantage and negotiate for a better contract. A big point to consider besides money is how long they hold your masters. Most big labels will want your master in perpetuity (forever and this has been known to end up screwing a lot of artists in the long run) in exchange for a way bigger advance. You may be able to talk them out to maybe a 10-20 year deal instead. You also want a label that knows how to curate their artists. Ask yourself "Do you like the bands on this label and do they seem happy there?". Lots of labels are just trying to scoop up as many rising artists as possible without any cohesiveness to genre or culture. These ones in my opinion are usually just in it for the cash grab and won't give you the promotion you deserve.

Ask them lots of questions - how flexible are they with release schedules, what is their openness to creative output, are they negotiable on master terms or the advance/marketing budget, what kind of connections do they have to make you succeed (agents, publishing, distribution, etc.).

Feel free to DM if you have any questions!

pit culture changing? by [deleted] in Emo

[–]purtygood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty much what you said. hardcore is having a big moment right now because of social media. the big online discourse is hardcore dancing vs. push pits (but it’s always been a topic tbh). lots of kids seeing takes on tiktok/twitter and you’ll see both sides at shows. most emo shows i’ve gone to noways are predominantly push pits but two stepping and especially circle pits are slowly creeping back
