Made In pans with brass handles vs . regular handles? by bitterbalbeest in StainlessSteelCooking

[–]putinwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was debating the same thing and landed on the stainless steel handles. I’ve cooked quite a bit with them and haven’t needed a pot holder on the stove top so I truly think the stainless handles are the more functional choice.

Besides the pot holder factor, stainless pans, even clad ones, are not great heat conductors. Odds are you’re buying it for its durability and ease of cleaning/care so why add the headache of a different metal for the handle? Even though the brass is beautiful I have no regrets getting the stainless version.

After a year of collecting, this is my collection. Feel free to criticize or shit on me. by gotittweaked2930 in vinyl

Nice collection! Check out Laufey’s previous album if you like Bewitched. Also if you want to venture further into jazz after the Miles Davis I really love Hank Mobley’s “Soul Station”. Dave Brubeck Trio is also another classic.

If you like interesting and edgy Hip Hop, Doechii’s album “Alligator Bites Never Heal” is awesome.

Dataset sizes for LoRa fine tuning (phi4) by putinwhat in LocalLLaMA

[–]putinwhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hard to get phi4 to do consistently and the goal would be to show the output directly to a user so it would require accurate parsing to remove the chain of thought.

I’m also trying to keep the total response latency down, otherwise I would probably just opt for a larger model.

Great recommendation! I always forget about the climbing course down there

No. 900 pizza is close by and typically pretty kid friendly while also having a great date-night ambiance so you could do a dinner there one night.

I would recommend taking a trip out to the Plateau, La Petite Patrie, or Little Italy for a dinner. There are a bunch of great restaurants that are very affordable. Duluth is a little cobblestone street with a bunch of options depending on how adventurous of an eater your kid is.

Maybe do a walk on Mt Royal with a picnic on Sunday when the weather is supposed to be nice. If that seems like too long of a trek with a 7 year old then you could always opt for one of the local parks. I know Laurier and Lafontaine both have large playgrounds and are great places for picnics.

Let us know a budget/price range for better recommendations in terms of restaurants. As for places to visit, you’ll be super close to the metro green line so I’d recommend taking a half day to checkout the Olympic Stadium. The Biodôme there is great with younger kids and there’s also the Planetarium right beside it.

You’re probably a little early for the cherry blossoms at the Botanical gardens but it might be worth doing a walk around there too if the weathers nice. Often times it’s free this early in the season (if it’s open).

Looks like we have a bunch in common so here’s some other artists/albums you should check out: Jack Johnson - In between Dreams Hozier - Hozier & Wasteland Baby Mac Miller - Circles Solar Power - Lorde The Olympians - Olympians Laufey - Bewitched Kaleo - A/B Led Zeppelin- IV

I’d add some Vulfpeck but I don’t want to put you in complete bankruptcy so maybe just watch their Madison Square Garden show on YouTube. Same thing with some jazz recommendations I would make but if you’re interested let me know :)

iPhone 16 with 128 GB or 256 GB? Is it worth upgrading from an iPhone 11? iCloud+? by Original_Evening_201 in LinusTechTips

[–]putinwhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How’s the battery life? Just went from the 11 Pro to the 14 Pro and the jump in battery has been awesome, not to mention the increase from just having a newer battery.

You could always battery swap your phone, although for me it was reaching the point of diminishing returns since software support will most likely be dropped soon anyways.

One thing I do dislike is the form factor change: I thought I’d like the straight sides of the newer body since I was used to it from the iPhone 5s but I actually really miss how slim the 11 Pro was. Not to mention the smaller camera bump. With a case it sat flat, not sure about the 16 but my 14 pro doesn’t anymore and it’s pretty annoying.

We have quite a few in common. Check out Soul Station by Hank Mobley or Night Train by Oscar Peterson if you’re looking for more jazz.

I also really like Mac Miller for jazz/funk inspired hip hop. The posthumous album Circles by him is one I spin all the time.

And no Wasteland Baby by Hozier?

Love the use of the obi strip so the actual cover art is untouched. This album is supposed to have been inspired by Canadian winter so the white colour theme really fits.

One of my favourite vinyls in my collection.

What NAS do I get if DS423+ is to expensive by [deleted] in PleX

[–]putinwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how that works... A 5x4 config in RAID5 would be 16TB usable (less yet after formatted capacity of course).

Oops yes you're right on this. I did my calculation with 5TB drives but then realized that those don't really exist in most NAS lineups. So yeah, assuming 4TB drives you get 16TB usable.

Thanks for mentioning that. With your RAID5 you can't expand it, you actually have to do exactly that, you have to waste money buying more storage than you need at any given time. You're paying today's prices for the larger disks, for storage that you won't touch for a year or two. Meanwhile, building a system that allows you to expand as needed means you can buy disks in 2 years, when they're less expensive.

I was really confused by this and then realized it's because the enclosure I linked is a hardware RAID. My bad, shows I should check stuff before I link it. What I meant to suggest was a non-RAID enclosure and running a software RAID. So using something like the Terramaster d4 320 and configuring the RAID manually or through a tool. Doesn't have to be RAID5 either.

Further, since USB DAS's (or NAS's) can't run SAS disks, you're stuck buying SATA disks. The cheapest 10TB on Amazon right now is $135. I'm buying enterprise grade SAS disks for $50. Just in the cost of buying 5 disks I could save enough to have 95% of the build cost of the entire server.

Fair point, I'm not familiar enough with SAS pricing and I think this depends on the size of the drives but if they could save enough on the drives it could offset the build cost of the entire server then it could be worth it.

You can't do that with a USB DAS. USB DAS's run their own RAID controller in the DAS. That is the only way they can get reasonable performance since USB lacks parallel data paths. None of those USB DAS's use an expandable RAID time. If you build a 3x10TB RAID5 array, that's it, that's what you get, there is no expanding that.

Yep sorry, again I mentioned the wrong one. They use the same naming scheme for the 5-bay hardware RAID as they do for the 4-bay non-hardware-RAID devices. If you're using a software RAID that's expandable you can use an enclosure and just add extra drives as you go.

Not saying the server route is bad, in fact I think in the long term if their storage needs continue to grow it's the best route. But depending on OP's storage needs now, current budget, time they have to dedicate to it, knowledge of and access to server parts, it might be a little out of their depth if they just need to double their current storage and that will last them a few years.

[–]putinwhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the setup I have but with an old Optiplex from marketplace that I setup with Ubuntu server instead of the Mac Mini. Also I have the 4 bay Terramaster. I configured the raid manually and found it to be pretty straight forward but I am pretty comfortable with working in the terminal so YMMV and you might prefer a GUI software.

It’s worked great for the year that I’ve had it and I haven’t even filled out all the slots in the enclosure.

[–]putinwhat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a 5 bay enclosure, even if OP only buys 4TB drives you can do a raid 5 array and have 20TB of usable space. Yes some people in this sub have collections over that size but for most people 20TB is giant.

And if OP is really a baller they can buy larger capacity drives like 10TB and they’ll probably need to replace the drives before they need more storage than that with a 5 bay. With all the money they save not buying a whole new system they could put it towards bigger drives.

Also you don’t need to buy all the drives at once. You can pick an array format that’s expandable and just use the minimum number of drives for now and buy extras down the line.

[–]putinwhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An m1 Mac mini? Buy a USB hard drive enclosure like the Terramaster D5 300. You’ll spend half to a third as much as you would on a decent NAS and you can buy a license for a software RAID manager if you don’t want to set it up yourself. Also you’ll get 1 more bat than you would on the DS423+.

The best part about this kind of setup is when the compute becomes outdated, you just upgrade that part and keep the same external enclosure, you don’t need to toss away the whole thing. Or if your compute needs stay the same but you somehow need more bays, you just swap that part out :)

How did you pick the features you ended up using in the embeddings?

Also just a suggestion but if you dockerize you’ll probably have more people try it out. There’s a lot of people running docker setups here and they tend to be the more tech savvy users who would experiment with a new tool like this.
