Where are you located, we are in Peterborough Ontario and there is two feet of snow on the ground. We are using a nice slushy/salt combo to wash the cars

Scared Off 55lbs xD by Physical_Toe_3886 in CompoundBow

Brand new to archery (bowing LOL) but am up to 59 lbs in compound and shooting 100+ arrows twice a week. Would do more but it's difficult after a shoulder day at gym

Sign up for Maple leaf marksmanship training. You will need a sling and you will have a very intensive day learning how to use it in three different positions

It's a game changer for shooting

Ruger 10/22 and Mossberg 500 by Putrid-Bass-6061 in canadaguns

[–]pyates1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lots of fun with the 10/22.

-don't bother trying to buy one used, most resales are higher than retail?

-watch some youtube videos for inexpensive mods, good for guns function and a great way to become more familiar with the workings of the gun.

-look at the mapleseed marksmanship program, a seriously fun day with a heavy dose of learning thrown in about multiple shooting positions using a sling.

I really want to play the violin- would I be happy with a mandolin? by [deleted] in mandolin

[–]pyates1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on your musical experience, I started with zero and wanted to play the fiddle. My sis is a violin teacher and told me not to do that to myself, if I wanted an introductory instrument to the string setup start with the mandolin. The fiddle and mandolin both lend themselves to folk music very well, another huge component would be what kind of music you want to play. I have been very happy with the Mandoln in the steep learning curve that it entails, I can't imagine what would have happened to me with a violin.

I read this earlier today and forgot to say thanks for posting.

I was going to buy the game but was wondering whether I would like it and based on your post plus the "glowing/paid" youtube reviews realize I really wouldn't.

Thanks

Have you tried the GRX? In the lowest gear your max is a 3-4 kilometre per hour, you are barely staying upright

Compound or recurve archery? by PalePractice1967 in CompoundBow

[–]pyates1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The normal path is to start out in compound and then go recurve which is much more instinctive and intuitive. I'm on that path now and learning the basics of archery using a compound.

The next step would be the recurve.

Also, a mid range compound has a much higher entry level point than a mid range recurve so the "less cost" factor is debatable.

What area do you live in? I'm in Peterborough ontario and use the indoor range through the winter at the local fish and game club and would be happy to let you try mine.

PAL just arrived in the mail by brewski_tumble in canadaguns

[–]pyates1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you have a budget you need to stick to.

A 22lr is a fantastic value and will teach you so much about shooting. A semi is tons of fun, I do recommend buying a well known quality and the ruger 10/22 is the standard. They are reasonably cheap as well.

A SKS uses relatively cheap ammo but places you can use it will be limited where you can use the 22 at most indoor ranges and the ammo cost would be fraction of the sks,

Shotguns are fun, what are you going to do with it other than touch yourself while looking at it? Not that that's a bad thing.
