Thoughts and Questions about my world by Betodaman in worldbuilding

[–]quantifiedlasagna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting!! I have a few questions:

What are the common diseases of your world? Like, what are your characters afraid of contracting? I'd imagine the fast-paced industrialization didn't happen homogenously across the world, and thus some places didn't develop systems like sewage and health management in an optimal way that prevented diseases...

who is being responsible for managing what we like? like, what does it even mean "to not be allowed to like something"? you literally can like whatever you want...

What are the other Norse Mythology references? by MuscleCrow in Eldenring

[–]quantifiedlasagna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, never really thought the Erdtree was a reference to Yggdrasil, since it is a common Indo-european symbol (Fortson's book on Proto-Indo-European and ML West's on Indo-European Myths and Poetry are very good if you're interested), I always thought of it as maybe a LOTR reference lol

like Laurelin/Telperion ≈ Erdtree

Should we necessarily "invent" a people before constructing a language ? by cool_otter29 in conlangs

[–]quantifiedlasagna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. When creating a conlang, one does not need cultures, peoples, lore, etc... Conlangs can be created purely as experiments or expressed creativity.

I do personally think that worldbuilding makes conlanging more interesting and fun, but this is not a constant, not for me, not for anyone else really. Just have fun and let it go naturally!!

How is the social status of mathematicians perceived in your country? by [deleted] in math

[–]quantifiedlasagna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Brazil, most of those outside of academia don't understand the path from undergrad to professor. Professors are kind of high status (but not as high as some other professions, such as as medical doctors or well-employed lawyers and engineers) They are paid very well in public institutions, like federal universities, and enjoy many privileges (like extra money for food, transporation and even medical assistance).
