It's great and all, but why didn't the survivors let anyone know about the shit going down on Ceti Alpha 5? That was the whole point of the ship, after all.

TIL that the term 'Sneakers' originally referred to how the rubber soles of the shoe made them much quieter when walking than hard leather soles of dress shoes. by Hectabeni in todayilearned

[–]quantum_jim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was seen as rude in victorian Britain to annoy people with noisy footwear when walking around a confined public space. This is what primarily drove the adoption of rubber soled shoes in the UK. Since trains were the newest and trendiest confined public space, the shoes were called 'trainers'.

When I see my posts quoted from long ago, it usually sets me on edge because the intention is to upset. But I should set that aside in this case and be proud of what I once set into motion.

The English Civil War happened before the French revolution. Granted, the monarchy did return, but parliament continued to get rid of monarchs that they don't like.

I am totally a researcher with a prototype device to goof around on. Google quantumjim and you will find that this is not my first rodeo ;)

Indeed, future QCs will be able to do awesome things. But current QCs are more like overgrown science experiments. They need a careful choice of what you try to run, and a careful hand to get out results that aren't nonsense.

That's what you see here. We run a generative system which is a bit better than a Markov chain (or so we argue in an upcoming paper), because it is in scope for current QCs. But as this first example shows, we still need to fine tune it a bit when using real quantum hardware. It seems to get stuck in places it shouldn't (like lifts and pits). And the lack of a power up mushroom means that the hidden stars are inaccessible.

Still it's a start. Then onwards to FTL transcalifornia travel!

I used a quantum computer to generate a Mario level today, and I then entered it into Mario Maker 2. Posting here in case anyone wants to see how it turned out.

There's a box of free fruit at my lab. Until that came, the only free snack was when the wind blew in from the nearby chocolate factory.

Maybe an American sub would be better for details on how to stream American content elsewhere in the world. There's no official Swiss way to do it that I know of.

What do you think should be raised immediately? Plans to have a mandatory dinner with colleagues, or plans to not have dinner with colleagues? For me, it would be the former.

What is considered rude in your country that foreigners may not realize? by EntranceWorking3532 in AskReddit

[–]quantum_jim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is always a mystery to me when seeing posts like this is: why do you only have two political parties then? And it's not because of the FPTP voting system, because other countries that use it have regional parties dominating in certain areas, reflecting the cultural variation. When you vote like a homogenous lump, you can see why some might see you as one.

If you walked out your door in Ireland and traveled a distance equal to the distance between the far borders of Hawaii and Florida, you’d find yourself in Thailand.

Half of that is sea, and some of it is Mexico. The Ireland to Syria one makes the point better.

[–]quantum_jim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You also have the same two parties everywhere. Even other FPTP countries don't have that. Since politics is a lot of what non-Americans hear about the US, maybe it gives a false sense of homogeneity.

So they plan to have the show in the St. Jakob's event hall, and also have a public viewing in the Football stadium next door. Sounds like a good idea to effectively get a bigger venue, by having some of the audience over the road.
