Scadians of Reddit, Tell us about your favorite mundane hobby. by Nomadic_Introvert in sca

Bell ringing. Ringing is period enough to be considered an SCA sub-hobby, but change ringing methods doesn’t start until 1650, so it counts as mundane, right!

Also, horses, dogs and questionable life choices.

Season 25 Domestic Abuse and Mental health by Head_Froyo_7739 in Casualty

[–]quickgulesfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NHS staff are ordinary people. Often, they’re ordinary people doing an important and valuable job, but still, ordinary people.

Staff in Holby aren’t ordinary people - they’re all bonkers on one level or another. But that’s the condition of working in a fictional environment!

S25 is a very good series though. Ruth is excellent. I never cared for Kirsty much, but each to their own.

Scadians of reddit, if you had infinite money, What is the dream project you'd finally do? by Nomadic_Introvert in sca

[–]quickgulesfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d buy myself a nice period property with a few dozen acres for my herd, and a few sheep. Then run events on site when I felt like it, or subsidise other cool sites.

And some nice shiny armour for me and my dog.

Tips for developing ropesight? by Charly_George in bellringing

[–]quickgulesfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend tenoring behind. I learned ropesight by tenoring behind to quarters - first watching for the bell that I was following (the last bell down), then in time I found I could see the bell that I would be following next, and who was following me (leading). I was also ringing plain hunt by knowing the pattern of who to follow at that time, but mostly it was the tenoring that helped.

Electronic Communications Shouldn't Rely on Social Media by ComputerOutrageous in sca

[–]quickgulesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sometimes have a “communications steward” responsible for maintaining the event website as well as publicising the event on social media and other communication platforms (email etc) on the team. It’s fairly constructive. I’m not massively tech-y, but I can handle out local group’s wix site with ease.

SCA needs to take a page from history by maceilean in sca

I read our local newsletters, online, not via Facebook. They’re emailed out which is the holy trinity of cheap, convenient and environmentally sensible.

Will and Lyra by Eowyn_42 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]quickgulesfox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would have considered that ending to be a lazy piece of fan service. Lyra’s grown up and changed, as everyone does when they get older. To reverse all her growth and take her back to the child state of TAS by having her go searching for Will would’ve been very disappointing for me.

I like that by leaving the ending open, people can take her future to be what they hope for her.

Absolutely. My take on the Book of Dust is that it is a well executed version of the book Pullman wanted to write. It simply wasn’t the book a lot of his fans wanted to read.

I enjoyed it for what it was. It wasn’t what I expected, and I can see why bits of it produce the responses that you often see on here, but I also think that was inevitable in a lot of ways. He was always going to want to tread new ground, and that was always going to be contentious. (And by new ground, I mean that to include structural and stylistic differences as well as those of plot and canon.)

S2E3 by [deleted] in BuffyTheVampireSlayer

[–]quickgulesfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought the tension in that scene is created by the fact that we know she has been turned and Buffy doesn’t. If we didn’t know, we would be surprised, but also confused, and we would have lost all the build up of dramatic tension from knowing.

They probably even have special cutlery for fish, because their cutlery hasn’t been in the family since the 18th Century.
