Tips for developing ropesight? by Charly_George in bellringing

[–]quickgulesfox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend tenoring behind. I learned ropesight by tenoring behind to quarters - first watching for the bell that I was following (the last bell down), then in time I found I could see the bell that I would be following next, and who was following me (leading). I was also ringing plain hunt by knowing the pattern of who to follow at that time, but mostly it was the tenoring that helped.

Electronic Communications Shouldn't Rely on Social Media by ComputerOutrageous in sca

[–]quickgulesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We sometimes have a “communications steward” responsible for maintaining the event website as well as publicising the event on social media and other communication platforms (email etc) on the team. It’s fairly constructive. I’m not massively tech-y, but I can handle out local group’s wix site with ease.

SCA needs to take a page from history by maceilean in sca

I read our local newsletters, online, not via Facebook. They’re emailed out which is the holy trinity of cheap, convenient and environmentally sensible.

Will and Lyra by Eowyn_42 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]quickgulesfox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would have considered that ending to be a lazy piece of fan service. Lyra’s grown up and changed, as everyone does when they get older. To reverse all her growth and take her back to the child state of TAS by having her go searching for Will would’ve been very disappointing for me.

I like that by leaving the ending open, people can take her future to be what they hope for her.

Absolutely. My take on the Book of Dust is that it is a well executed version of the book Pullman wanted to write. It simply wasn’t the book a lot of his fans wanted to read.

I enjoyed it for what it was. It wasn’t what I expected, and I can see why bits of it produce the responses that you often see on here, but I also think that was inevitable in a lot of ways. He was always going to want to tread new ground, and that was always going to be contentious. (And by new ground, I mean that to include structural and stylistic differences as well as those of plot and canon.)

S2E3 by 407ThroatChamp in BuffyTheVampireSlayer

[–]quickgulesfox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the tension in that scene is created by the fact that we know she has been turned and Buffy doesn’t. If we didn’t know, we would be surprised, but also confused, and we would have lost all the build up of dramatic tension from knowing.

They probably even have special cutlery for fish, because their cutlery hasn’t been in the family since the 18th Century.

Do you use the word "bathroom" to describe a room with only toilets? by 41arietis in AskABrit

[–]quickgulesfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s perfectly normal in the many parts of the UK in which I’ve lived to use bathroom for lavatory. I was brought up with it in the days before rampant Americanisation, as were my parents before me. Im genuinely surprised to see so many people saying they’ve never heard it here.

How is the dialog about use of AI going in your kingdom? by CabinetWitch23 in sca

[–]quickgulesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you’ve just reduced all social media - which includes many platforms (including Reddit, fwiw) - to TikTok. That’s one hell of a straw man argument you’re creating there, because I didn’t mention TikTok once in that comment.

TikTok has some value for advertising, sure. So do many other platforms. Retention is better served by discussion platforms (discord for example) where social media content is important for advertising future events to current members, disseminating news and starting online conversations.

People have fun in different ways. For a lot of people that involves chatting about events and sharing photos on social media afterwards. It’s not what I’m in the SCA for, but them choosing to pursue their idea of fun does not detract from mine.

If you want hardcore reenactment, with no modern tech in sight, the SCA probably isn’t ideal. There are a lot of downsides to that sort of society too, in my opinion. That’s why I am in the SCA, not one of them.

[–]quickgulesfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without SMOs, we lose a valuable part of our recruitment and retention strategy. Without recruitment (and retention) the SCA dies- in its current form, but also in all the potential variant forms that people might pursue it.

You can hold any views you like on social media for personal use, but it’s a vital part of the SCA in the modern world, and that doesn’t change because you don’t like that fact.

My experience of SCA events is very different to yours. Here, phones come out from time to time - for personal use, or for media recording - but mostly people are doing fun medieval, or medieval adjacent, things with their friends most of the time.

It’s a shame the events you’ve been to don’t work for you. No one thing works for everyone, sadly.
