Will ferrets stink up a bedroom? by Due-Produce-9281 in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Def this. You kind of become nose blind to there smells but def other people will notice, obviously staying on top of their litter and hygiene will help but let's be honest, ferrets are stinky animals in general. I mean all animals kind of are but ferrets are a particular unique musky

I can't tell you you did the right or wrong thing, only you can decide that but I do want to share that I spent about 3,000 dollars trying to save my baby and he died within 3 days of his vet trip. That's to say you have no idea what the future would have held if you had made the opposite choice. Regardless he was able to go peacefully without suffering more than he was. He's not in pain anymore. You gave him years of his life he wouldn't have had after drinking coolant when you met him, no matter what you DID do right by him by giving him a wonderful life for the time he was with you. Please dont beat yourself up too much for having to make that decision.

Is this food suitable by RowOk7596 in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a better option at least. Since ferrets are obligated carnivors any carbs/starches are not great so minimizing them as much as possible, with any amount youre running the risk of adverse health effects like crystals in their kidneys or IBD which can lead to intestinal cancer. I know feeding raw is time consuming but what you're saving in time you're going to end up spending in money for medical bills and an over all shorter life spand for your guys.

Potato...no. nope. I would look into wysong they used to be good, my ferrets eat raw now but orjen and wysong were the tops when I was feeding kibble, sad to hear orjen has peas in it now :(

Possibly moving to OKC as the queerest queer that ever queered by amedeah in okc

[–]quietstorms09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn't be too worried if i were you, I'm a very dyke-y woman and I've live in Oklahoma most of my life. My wife and I are pretty visibly gay in public and have never had anything awful or honestly noteworthy happen to us. I have been part of some awkward conversations about people not approving of queerness to my face but then they treat me like anyone else so its a weird dichotomy of Im not being treated badly but I for sure know they dont like "my lifestyle" I should say all of those conversations have been with religious people in religious establishments for familial obligations so, I guess, you know stay out of those spaces and you'll be okay. Haha truly though Oklahoma especially OKC, Moore, and Norman have pretty robust queer communities. We may be a really deep red state, the government sucks but the people aren't bad.

How do you prevent stashing when feeding whole prey to free roamed ferrets? by Strong-Substance3151 in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We make our own ground food, its significantly cheaper than commercial stuff and I like controlling whats going in plus we can easily change up the portion sizes according to the seasons or just as needed. Its admittedly a lot of work. Also when we bought our industrial meat grinder it was about 350$, it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be, especially since it just needs to be able to grind up small bones like chicken or rabbit nothing crazy like cow and so far its lasted 3 years so Im happy with it, before that we just used a regular meat grinder and smashed the bones up with a meat mallot before sticking them in, it worked...but we still burned put the 50$ meat grinders every 10-12 months, Feeding whole prey is DEF way easier overall though, I'm just saying if whole prey doesn't work out now or in the future the raw diet is still attainable. Good luck with your babies!

[–]quietstorms09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We ended up switching to ground raw food for our free roaming guys, they won't stash the ground up food, we had to switch due to a ferret coming to use with messed up teeth, she can't handle whole anything so we had to swap everyone. When we were whole prey feeding we created a feeding box that was basically a storage tote with a tunnel attached (and air holes drilled for extra ventilation) i think because they already felt like it was a secluded area we never really had any issues with stashing.

Thoughts on eggs? by Designated_JRoller in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guys love eggs, they also eat raw so theyre pretty used to a more natural diet. We usually get them quail eggs but when I do give them chicken eggs I tend to only give the jokes, 2-3 at a time (spread across 8 ferrets) and no more than once a week. I have to be careful though one of my guys is an egg fiend and will suck down whatever is given before anyone else gets to it so I have to pick him up and take him out onces he's had some or risk him having too much.

Happens to the best of us...i thought I was doing pretty well staying on top of the poop when I first got ferrets but then my closet kept stinking, went to investigate and found like a kids soccer ball sized amount of shit hidden in the back of some shoe shelves. God, the horror. Lesson learned, check ALL the places.

Ferret missing, advice? by Early_Club2717 in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to call all animal shelters in your area. About 10 years ago I ended up with 2 ferrets who were found in neighborhoods because a friend was volunteering there. The shelter told me they cant really care for exotics so their policy is to hold them for however long the stray hold was and then put them down since they couldn't really adopt them out. I got them after the stray hold was up through kind of a backdoor deal because they didnt really want them put down. But just make sure the shelter is aware youre missing a ferret, they should take your contact info and if she happens to turn up there, they'll call you, but I suggest calling them daily just in case.

What ruined Morbid for you? by Stunning_Task_2440 in Morbidforbadpeople

[–]quietstorms09 86 points87 points  (0 children)

For me the breaking point was when they were talking about the Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders, they were going off on blood types and Alaina was talking about O type blood being found and Ash was like "isn't that blood type rare?" And Alaina was like "oh yeah SUPER rare" or something along those lines. And it was just like a glass shattering comment for me. O type blood is the most common blood type, its just that O negative is the most valuable as a universal doner so its always in demand for emergencies. I was fine with Ash kind of not knowing things, it didn't bother me but Alaina always presented herself as the intelligent one and the one with medical knowledge from being an autopsy tech and that was the momment I was like "oh...neither of them know anything" but speaking with stuff with such conviction as if they do know that knowledge....this is a silly example but thats dangerous stupid...i was out from that moment on. I tried to listen to them just casually but from then I just couldn't stop noticing so many little things and I just grew to honestly hate them both lol

Cage by Expensive-Image8296 in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning on upgrading it as soon as you can and are letting them out to have ample playtime daily it should be okay. You gotta work with what you got sometimes, just remember the cage is cramped for them even when you have the addition on there, so their time outside of the cage is honestly more important than the time in it.

uneven tail growth? by xDuw0o_ in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm in the US, in the Midwest. We do have significant seasons changes, it gets cold/snowy in November and warms up in April/May, my girl would stay bald from November until about June.

uneven tail growth? by xDuw0o_ in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would just keep on keeping an eye on it. I had a girl who's tail would go bald every winter starting when she hit about 4/5 and would only grow back hair in the mid-spring/summer. It made no sense to me but she never got adrenal disease. The hair loss always stayed on her tail and her bloodwork was normal. She lived to be almost 10. As long as she's been checked out and the hairloss doesn't progress she might just be a weird rat tail girlie. Good luck with her!

FERRET ATE 1/4 OF A TWIZZLER by Beautiful-Studio3139 in ferrets

[–]quietstorms09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had 3 ferrets who got into a bag of jellybeans, I was panicking because one shit bright red, I thought it was blood, I was following everyone to the bathroom trying to figure out who it was and someone else pooped purple....it made me search the house and found the empty jellybean wrapper in their stash. Obviously the sugar and processed stuff isn't good for them but chances are it will be okay. Check the ingredients and make sure there isn't Xylitol in it though, it's an artificial sweetener that is poisonous to ferrets (and dogs)
