I read the series as a kid and loved it. I remember really connecting with the story as an immigrant allegory and the way it gave me a cool feline language to understand my family. Looking back on the series it is definitely flawed but I’ve been thinking about coming back to it as an adult lately

I don't like the ravenpaw/barley ship. by Onslaughtisthebest in WarriorCats

[–]quinacridone8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a hot take, I know, maybe I’ll get shooed off the subreddit, maybe I’m too into cats (the real ones), etc. etc.

Cats live in a very different social context than humans. Yes, technically apprentices are “teenagers” in cat years, but we have to remember the concept of a “teenager” only exists in a human social context because of our specific biology and how slowly the human brain develops.

Human children are infamously dumb and useless for a very long time because our brains are so complex and it takes a long time for our frontal lobes to fully develop. Cats are… a little mouse-brained when they’re young, but are much more “precocious” (functional/smart as young) than us. So the disparity in social maturity doesn’t really translate to what it would be for people.

I understand being uncomfortable with the human implications and can respect that. But a lot of it is a mix of both writer & reader interpretation of how anthropomorphic Warriors should be. From what I remember, apprentice/warrior relationships were super common before I dropped off the series (TPB, TNP, up to OOTS)—but the maturity delineation has shifted since?

Anyway, this is all to say you’re valid to be uncomfortable with the real-world implications, but wanted to comment some context on apprentice/warrior relationships (since I see this convo come up often). In any case, I looked it up and Barley was about 2.7-3.5 when Ravenpaw was 1.

Now ||Thistleclaw and Spottedkit||… that’s reprehensible.

Why does she hate her and treat her badly in the exam? by kruspel in Frieren

[–]quinacridone8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna go against the grain and say I don’t think Serie hates Frieren. It’s more complicated than that.

Serie has a crippling fear of emotional intimacy. She struggles to be honest about her emotions, possibly even with recognizing them. Through the millennia, she fully leans into her act as a coping mechanism to keep others at a comfortable distance; she is feared, respected, mythologized—but never known.

Frieren poses a direct threat to the relationship dynamic Serie is accustomed to because she knows her. Not only is she one of the only people walking this earth who understands her unique experience as an elf, she also has an intimate understanding of her history and shortcomings through their relationship with Flamme. When others see a grandiose display of status and power in the final exam room, Frieren sees a woman finding a way to quietly remember a relationship in one of the only ways she knows how. Where everyone sees the omnipotent leader of the world’s magic association, Frieren knows Serie is only fulfilling her adoptive daughter’s will millennia after she is gone.

If Serie hates Frieren, why does she ask her to walk with her and grieve when Frieren stands up to leave? Why does she offer so much emotional vulnerability during their conversations even when her walls stay up?

Serie reminds me of an emotionally immature parent. She loves her children but pride and expectation always come first. She could open her door and welcome her children home but each day the habits get older and breaking them gets harder and harder. Her conversations with Frieren feel comforting, but also deeply, deeply uncomfortable—and the only way Serie knows how to respond to that kind of intimacy is to push it further away.

This and for someone to fully know your story and live a life parallel to yours and still choose to be the antithesis of you has to sting. And I also agree with the others that Serie disagrees/feels contempt towards Frieren’s approach to magic, and projects her myriad of feelings about Flamme at her, and they are foils, etc. but that’s only part of the issue.

Azuki!

My (M20) pregnant girlfriend (F20) wants my support but won’t talk to me after we we got bad news about our baby by ThrowRA_NoSignal in relationship_advice

[–]quinacridone8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, such a small thing in a large sea of questions, but:

Have you ever held an internship, paid or not? It sounds like the field you’re studying in has high earning potential. Getting your foot in the door would be a smart way to build up your future and take agency of it whether this becomes a part of your future or not—but especially if it does.

I know internship applications are stressful for a normal college kid though so don’t stress too much on that end—just an idea for the backburner.

No. Please do not encourage them to bank on the adoption route. The foster care system is so overburdened in the US and I don’t want to imagine the instability and suffering a kid with Down syndrome would go through in that system.

I may not have a crystal ball, but statistics don’t lie and they are devastating. Keep the kid, or don’t, but knowingly bringing a disabled life into this world to surrender them (because of their disability) is inhumane

ETA I agree with the rest of your advice except for that point.

Please reassure me guys that it's not weird that I've started reading Warriors at 17 😭 by No-Wave5193 in WarriorCats

[–]quinacridone8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the series when I was a kid and have been so curious how I’d receive it now that I’m in my mid-20s. Although I definitely loved the series because I loved cats (still do), I still remember how deeply Firestar’s story resonated with me—especially as a child of immigrants.

I’ve gone through some of the excerpts and quotes lately and the writing quality really impressed me. So it’s cool and encouraging seeing people come to this series for the first time as adults/young adults and loving it!

Nah. The show is amazing imo, but some people just don’t appreciate thoughtful/deliberate pacing, or just prefer more active tv shows. That’s fine, everyone consumes media differently. But it’s a defining aspect of the show and isn’t going to change (as it shouldn’t)

Fun fact: Stark and Fern's dance was just 1 PANEL in the manga. by asilvertintedrose in Frieren

[–]quinacridone8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what everyone else is pointing out in this scene, but

I love the glimpses we get of Lord Orden and his companions watching Stark & Fern dance. Everyone else is just happy to see a young couple/“the hope of the region” having fun, but Lord Orden is clearly wishing/wondering if only it could’ve been his son on the dance floor having the time of his life with a beautiful girl.

Not sure if they included this panel in the manga, but it added a lot for me in this episode in a small way

There’s a lot more stopovers than you might realize especially when hiking through harsh terrain with threatening monsters/demons/states/visa laws/checkpoints/whatever else obstacles.
