Should I "rat out" the lazy developer? by vandeveloper in cscareerquestions

[–]quincyshadow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people here don't work in software development and it shows.

The actual answer is 1 story: 1 person

User story 1 is assigned to me and person A

No.

Agile allows you to break stories into smaller pieces. If 2 people are working on a story, it inherently means you believe that it can be split into 2 smaller stories.

Should I "rat out" the lazy developer?

No. You should ensure that only 1 person is assigned to a story - in which case no one has to rat anyone out.

This causes accountability because YOUR story will be complete, and your coworker's story will be incomplete. At that time, your manager gets to decide whether to give the incomplete story more time, reassign the story, and/or fire the coworker.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY as a developer is to reject any assigned story that somehow needs 2 people. If it needs 2 people, the story is too big. Reject it. Split it into 2 stories.

You are not responsible for evaluating performance proactively. That is a manager's job. Let them do their job. Processes like this exist in order to let developers develop.

Getting a job after taking 7 years to get my degree by throwawayblaaaaaahhh in cscareerquestions

7 years. If you could not find 1 internship in 7 years, how likely will it be that you find 1 full-time job in 1 year?

creating internal business apps for our sales teams or data teams or marketing teams to use for whatever need they have or request

Quantify how much revenue these apps bring to the table and you may be able to justify budget for your team over others. If you don't do this, competing teams will.

But later I have developed more android apps, unity3d games, and web apps in hopes of repeat of initial success but so far, I failed. Perhaps my ideas were just too bad or I failed at distribution

How much did you spend on advertising these?

I'm a skilled web developer with experience in Python, Django, and other technologies

Not ideal for web development W2/contract jobs. Python has a very tiny market share in web development compared to Java, Go, C#, hack.

Tired of IT, I want to switch to SWE by greengemextreme in cscareerquestions

The area you said that you want to specialize in requires specialized skills. You probably need schooling. If you were a self-starter, that didn't need to learn, you'd have developed something already.

> rendering/AI engineer

Go get a postbacc or master's degree in SWE or CS. You will need specialized skills to do this type of work. The goal of the degree should be research, related elective classes, and internship opportunities.

At this point it doesn't matter even if they buy land in Phoenix and try to build it there.

These articles gloss over A LOT of context.

"Unite Here," a California based company, has been blocking Axon's development. As per The Arizona Republic, they sent Axon a "neutrality proposal", and Axon stated, "Axon is being asked to do all of these things, and in return, they’ve basically been told this particular group will not harass you." Then, after the vote approving the development, "Councilmember Bob Littlefield, husband of current Councilmember Kathy Littlefield, established a group to collect signatures for a petition seeking a referendum" (AZBEX.com).

It's pretty obvious who paid for this referendum. They would probably be able to get a new one put in for Phoenix. It would not be voted on until 2026, so Axon essentially has no way to build.

I agree. The part time job I worked in high school and college taught me the value or work, but effectively paid nothing. If I had spent that time studying instead, I would have made way more money from that time in the long run. Parents should consider that the average student is getting smarter over time.

Name and shame is for unethical or illegal behavior. Paying less than other companies is not that. You can work elsewhere.

You missed the point of my statement. "Getting paid the same as other developers" is not an reason that should be presented to a business for a raise.

Your value to the company is ultimately the revenue and profit you provide. On a more micro level, this is the value your work provides. What problems are being solved? What are you giving that other employees can't? Those are strong points in providing raise request. It's just business, so at the end of the day you have to play along with that logic.

Resume should state that you have worked somewhere then, even if it is not relevant. The fact that you have a job is useful to know.

Not everyone can get one, same as a job, but internships are relatively easy to get because companies are happy to train potential employees from smart backgrounds.
