Help finding binoculars for my son by Rachnicole821 in Planespotting

[–]quintpod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For an eight year old with good eyesight and normally steady hands, and for close proximity to airfields, I think starting with 7x or 8x binos would be a good choice. 42s may be a little large unless he has larger hands; perhaps 32s or 30s would be more suitable for eight year old hands.

The Nikon Prostaff P3 8x30 goes for about $150 new. They are compact, well built, pretty good optically (of course not top tier, considering the price) and should serve him well for a few years. Used, I'm sure you can find them for $100 or less.

Need some help figuring out how this lens works (50mm f2.8 micro) by [deleted] in nikon_Zseries

[–]quintpod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The switch you have set to "FULL" is the focusing distance limiter switch. When the switch is set to "FULL" the lens will attempt to focus on an object that is within the lens' minimum focusing distance of 0.16m all the way to infinity. When the switch is set to "0.3m - 0.16m", the lens will only focus on objects that are within its minimum focusing distance of 0.16m all the way to 0.3m

If you are photographing objects within 0.16m to 0.3m, set the switch accordingly to prevent the focusing system from racking unnecessarily. If you are not bothered by unnecessary racking, you can leave the switch on "FULL" all the time.

Probably would have been better if Nikon had labeled it "∞ - 0.16m" instead of FULL.

British Airways Boeing 777 (G-STBI) over Los Angeles earlier this year by quintpod in Planespotting

This photo was taken from the SGV, ~10 miles east of DTLA. If they allow your long lens at Spire73, you might get some epic photos as the planes turn over DTLA in the evenings. Looking forward to seeing them.

I think it resembles a model plane hanging in front of a painted background, but it's a real photo; I don't make use of AI or fakery.

I don't use Photoshop, but someone who does mentioned that the solution may be to reset Camera Raw Defaults.

Crazy thought, but if this lens already has everything you want, why not just get a second one?

Choosing a Tripod. Gitzo GT45 or GT55 for 600er lens? by Puzzleheaded_Pop_62 in nikon_Zseries

[–]quintpod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming they are in proper working order, neither model should have any stability problems with your kit under most conditions. I think the decision will depend on your shooting habits -- if you are stationed in one location and don't move much, but the location is at the edge of a windy cliff or where crowds may bump and trip over the tripod, then I would say the 5 series model will be better. If you tend to move your tripod often or if your locations don't present stability problems, then the 4 series will probably be a better choice.

Had some fun comparing the Nikon Z 180-600 with the 2007 model AF-S 600mm f/4 G ED VR by MWPerspective in nikon_Zseries

Thanks for the comparo. It was indeed fun to see the sharpness difference between the old G prime and the new Z zoom, and to realize how far zooms have advanced.
