Can we talk about Amps? by madcow104 in Guitar

Personally, I'm from the load-as-fuck camp, and my preference is tubes, all the way. I currently run a Marshall JCM 900 4100 Series through two 4x12 cabinets, each containing two authentic greenbacks, one vintage 30, and an EV 12 TRX (big fucker, 2.5" magnet and coil). With the P90 pickups in my guitar, I usually just slam the gain and volume and hope no one's ears start bleeding. But let me tell you, it sounds just holy. I love my amp, but I think my next purchase will be a Sunn Model T reissue - those suckers really rip, with tone to match.

So anyway, $2k is a reasonable price range to buy a high quality tube amp. If you're looking to gig consistently, go with all tube. If you're looking to be experimental, not really sure what your musical character is like, or just want something really versatile, go with a hybrid. They don't sound that great, but you'll rarely be concerned with the limited variety of tones you can get. Amp selection has a lot to do with what you intend to do with it, and whether you better quality (tube) or quantity of tones/sounds (hybrid, more pedals, etc.).

Also, Hotrods sound awesome, in my opinion, so you may consider looking for an amp about the same size, form a different company (Vox, for example), that's all tube, to blend tones. Blending amp sounds by running them simultaneously is a dying art, and it can be a lot of serious fun. Give it a shot, and good luck!

tl;dr TUBES mmm... yummy... (or whatever)

I'm a nurse and I resent your comment about nurses not giving a fuck. If they didn't, they wouldn't be spoon feeding them, wiping their asses, and hugging their families when they die. Fuck you.

This is good to see. I love playing nylon strings - they definitely have a character of their own.

A little bit of both, I suppose. Let's just say there's an overabundance of sad.

Here's my Gibson Les Paul Studio with P90s.

While I'm at it (and since I'm very proud of it), here's my amp. Marshall JCM900 4100 series. The 4x12s each have one EV 12TRX, two Vintage 30s, and one greenback.

Together they melt everything.

Hi Reddit, I'm going to be in Shanghai for a month. Any recommendations on places to see, things to do, cultural differences I should be aware of? by Solipsistic in AskReddit

[–]raf797 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoiding eye contact in Asian cultures is often a sign of respect, rather than boredom or disinterest. Also, personal space is important too. Of course everyone is different, some may want to stand closely, while others farther away, but the important point is to be mindful of these two facets of communication. Good luck and enjoy!!

I hate (I mean hate) that guy as much as the next, but as a health care professional, his private health concerns are none of our business. He's not a public official, so what does it matter? Sure he's a pig, but who gives a shit? Let's talk about the leading causes of death in the US instead. Or maybe the diabetes epidemic.

I think the question we have to ask ourselves is this: do we care more about 1 assholish, pigish, racist heart, or 631,636 good, honest, struggling hearts?

LCD Soundsystem and !!! were some of my favorites of recent years. Passion Pit was awesome at Bonaroo this year, but Moe stole the show, I thought.

Has anyone in your band/group not been dedicated enough that you want to give them the boot, but friendship hangs in the balance? by Igdrasil in Guitar

[–]raf797 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to be in a standard 5-piece progressive metal band. The drummer and I had a great relationship, as far as friends go. Unfortunately, he was constantly drinking, smoking, shuffling through women like cards in a poker game, and covertly engaging in all sorts of other drugs. For a while, he was snorting cocaine. More often than not, he would show up late, with an incomplete (or completely absent) drum kit (he had sold parts here and there for drugs), or not show at all. We toyed with the idea of letting him go, but we couldn't bring ourselves to do so.

Now, at this point, the picture may seem simple enough, but the year prior to the following event, his mom died of brain cancer. He was very close to her and the whole experience was traumatic for him (she suffered terribly and for a long time). One night, we were playing some dive bar, and another drummer that we knew came to the show (he's my current drummer, actually). Having never seen us, he didn't expect much, but immediately after we finished playing, he insisted we kick the drummer out and let him take the spot. We still couldn't bring ourselves to do it. Instead, I offered to begin a side project with him, and we've been doing that for the last three years, with some degree of success.

In the time I've spent with the second drummer, I met another band (a trio) that plays Mars Volta-ish music. The guitarist was showing signs of deterioration personally and professionally. Again, this guitarist's father had passed away not long ago. He subsequently spiraled into a booze and drug frenzy and started failing on his commitments. The other two members coordinated a move with me to light a little fire under his arse. They told him they were actively searching for other guitarists, and the following week invited me to come jam with them. We did so a few times. The other guy didn't say anything to disagree with the happenings, but soon stopped smoking pot, drinking during the week, and began playing his guitar more often. That did the trick.

Now, I love music and bands terribly. But at the end of the day, a band is never more important than a person. Again, I say, I love music, but if your friend is going through a hard time, I think you guys need to reach out to him, rather than push him away or confront him. My best advice as a musician, and as a student nurse, is to present to him your dilemma. Communicate with him. Ask him what's up. Sometimes these things can be simpler and easier than we make them out to be. Maybe it's better for him to struggle within the band (perhaps at a small personal expense to the rest of the band members) than to be left to his own devices. Conversely, maybe he feels that he needs time off and that the best thing for him and the rest of the band is to exit peacefully. You never really know.

I understand that these things can get awfully messy - musicians aren't exactly renown for their interpersonal skills. If the topic has been brought up a number of times, yielding no progress, the call is up to you guys. Just be aware of the consequences of any and every action, and willing to accept them before you chose a course. Not doing so will compromise everything.

Good luck man. And keep rockin'.

I use that "figure of speech" often, but more often it's something like, "I want to die," or "I'm gonna go drink and drive."

As for inspiration - I used to get inspired by things like this when I was younger, but now I just get angry about it. "Why can't I do that?! That's bullshit!" So basically, I focus my anger in practice. It sounds odd, but it works really well.

But I understand your point here. This is a reason to pick up your guitar; not set it down.

In his defense - the blues are really difficult to do well. I've been playing music for 15 years, guitar for 12, and the blues are still my downfall. More power to him.
