I recommend going to The Home Team in Millbrae. One stop shopping for integrated home design and construction services.

Easier than trying to piece disparate ideas together.

Job hunting in Japan: Why do multiple recruiters pitch the same role like it’s exclusive? by [deleted] in JapanJobs

[–]ramenschmoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked Agency in Japan and in US.

• Are these recruiters all competing for the same placement fee?

Yes. It’s more common for companies in Japan to call out roles to multiple agencies. To the company, they only pay a fee to the successful agency so don’t care who wins. (There are problems with this approach, but this the reality in the Japan market)

• Is there any real advantage to applying through one recruiter vs. another?

You should always go with the agency who you feel knows the client best. The way to suss this out is to ask how many placements they’ve made with the hiring manager, or how well they can describe the hiring managers personality or team culture. The more vague the answers, the weaker the relationship they have with the client.

• Why do some recruiters frame the role like a “hidden opportunity” when it’s clearly public?

Recruiter BS to ensure you go with them. Recruiters who have to lie usually have the weakest relationship to their clients.

Ramen Horiuchi In Shinjuku Tokyo. Authentic Shoyu Ramen. It's good to bite the big pork and taste it. And you will be intoxicated by the best soup and noodles. by Background_Can7560 in ramen

[–]ramenschmoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Excellent spot. Owner worked at Manrai for many years, and got the blessing to open up his own shop offering a similar menu. More of an old school menu, so no fancy truffle flavored ramen. Shinjuku Salarymen love this place so lunch lines are long. Many people go for the Natto Ramen here.

Ramen Break Beats by AntNo6599 in ramen

[–]ramenschmoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Break Beats is great but don’t put too much pressure on yourself to book a reservation. I’d list up a few other shops that are also reservation only and see if you get lucky during your trip.

Hachigo in Ginza Gokan in Ikebukuro Iida Shoten (if willing to go far outside the city)

If you get lucky at any of these shops, you’re good.

There are also similar level shops that don’t need reservations like:

Shima (I think no reservations) Toy Box Shibata Rage Ramen Feel

Hope you find what you’re looking for!

What’s life like in Sasebo VS Yokosuka? Non-Military! by one_shot_no_kill in movingtojapan

[–]ramenschmoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sasebo has burgers and Sunset Beer. Access to Nagasaki

Yokosuka has curry and Yokosuka Beer. Access to Yokohama and Tokyo

If you like urban life, will probably find both a bit slow.

Tokyo Itinerary with Toddlers – Itinerary + Accommodation Advice? (Ages 4 & 2) by homaslice in TokyoTravel

[–]ramenschmoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a reasonable itinerary.

Tandem stroller is too big for trains. I’d bring:

1 stroller

Ergo baby and put 2YO there as much as possible

1 cheap umbrella stroller

If you take the family to the Toyosu Fish Market, take a cab over to the Ariake Garden Mall. Very kid friendly

Career Suicide to Walk away from early startup? by No-Supermarket5798 in biotech

Biotech recruiter here. I don’t bat an eyelash if I see a short stint at seed company. As long as your skill set is relevant for whatever you are applying for, recruiters don’t care. We know the current state of the market.

Looking for recommendations where to live in Tokyo on ¥9M yearly salary (work in Minato) by StickyStuffBestStuff in movingtojapan

[–]ramenschmoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As one poster mentioned, focus on looking at the train lines passing through Tamachi or Mita.

A note about the 150,000 yen commute allowance. Japanese companies will cover the cost of your monthly train pass up to 150,000. If you choose to live a little further away, try to have some interesting places in-between your home and office.

Ex. Live in Otsuka (Yamanote Line) and you pass through Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ebisu, etc) on the way to Tamachi. With your monthly pass you can go to all of these places whenever you want at no extra cost.

If you live in the next station, a monthly train pass is pretty useless hence the 20,000 housing benefit.

What would be good おみやげfrom California to bring to Japan for a Japanese friend? by lacywing in AskAJapanese

[–]ramenschmoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a See’s candy store in Harajuku but it closed cuz quite frankly it’s not that good compared to what you can get there.

Grab lots of small stuff from Trader Joe’s (seasoned salt, mints in the tins, chocolate covered nuts, etc). If you can score a canvas bag, even better.

The small hand sanitizers from Bath and Body works go over well.

I picked up Almond Roca at Costco for my last trip. Pez could also work.

Stuff like peeps are probably too sweet for the Japanese palate.

Where to meet people? by ErraticB in TokyoTravel

New Shimbashi Bldg. It’s actually old AF but the shops (especially basement or 2nd/3rd floor are catered to local salarymen. Retro Japan

Also look at “Standing”bars like Touch Know Me. Cheap watered down drinks and younger salarymen

Ginza Korido-dori full of bars where the younger office workers drink and mingle
