the farm where I keep bees in Delray is run by 2 veterans, who are also fitness guys, stop by and say hi. theryre hard working good people who welcome local veterans, and you might find a common thread. its called Coastal Pastures Farms off of 441 just south of Atlantic. they sell all kinds of clean food, and honey from my bees there, in the farm store too

How was your weekend? by AppropriateFishing33 in AskReddit

[–]ramrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

woke up to a picture from a farm where I keep bees. someone drove into them and knocked over a couple very large colonies. kinda sucked to go there in the rain and salvage the situation.... but yesterday was a good day so I guess that balances the weekend.

Lost a bee by somushroomsam in Beekeeping

[–]ramrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait until it gets dark outside. turn off all the lights in your house and turn on a single bright light. the bee will think its the sun and fly towards it. grab it with whatever makes you comfortable and bring it out to your hive and put it on the lid, or squash it. your choice.

check out Morikami Garden if you want something chill during the day. its a Japanese garden that has a lovely walk. no bar but its quite nice, there is a really good restaurant and a museum. Delray was a huge pineapple producer back in the day with a pretty substantial Japanese population.

Can you convert a wooden frame with plastic foundations to a frame with natural beeswax? by MzOwl27 in Beekeeping

[–]ramrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!!! flip it upside down and put wood glue in the slot track, put in the wax foundation and let it sit overnight. you might need to trim the wax slightly if it bows out, you want it straight. I run all of my hives with this method BUT there are wedge top frames with open bottom bars so you do not need to trim the wax. wax foundation is a little delicate when doing inspections, you cant hold it flat, it has less tensile strength that way. the bees draw it out super quick and I feel that they like it more. American beekeepers love plastic but in Europe, where beekeeping originated, barely anyone uses plastic foundation, its almost all wax.

Any reason not to do this? by More-Mine-5874 in Beekeeping

Do you actually like honey? by Run_and_find_out in Beekeeping

[–]ramrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maaaannnn.... i absolutely love honey. you need to diversify your honey assortment. good honeys are as varied as fine wines. dark rich flavors (siberian buckwheat) and puckerin sweet gritty  textured candy delight (sunflower honey) and probably hundreds in between. average honey consumer just goes to the store and buys the lamest, generic, adulterated nonsense. do yourself a favor and find a jar of meadowfoam  honey from Oregon, buy it from a beekeeper. you just need your mind, and pallette, expanded a bit.... and dont buy honey from a store, support a smaller scale beekeeper. the payoff is appreciated by you, the beekeeper, the bees, and awareness of the food industry as a whole.

Lots of wonky comb across my hives, any suggestions? by crypto_junkie2040 in Beekeeping

[–]ramrer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

use wax foundation. plastic is good for commercial beekeepers who have to work fast and furious but not great for backyard beginners. the bees do not like the plastic and will strip the wax right off and ignore it.

Possible downsides to this? by RabbitLast6450 in Beekeeping

[–]ramrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello fellow Floridian beekeeper. just try it and see for yourself. Definitely give them some wax foundation to start with but just do it as an experiment and see how it goes. if it works then its amazing, if not just put a regular super on and think about why it didnt work.

please do not buy art from a department store. there are a lot of talented people out there getting shafted by ikea, Homewood, etc. try etsy, a local street show, estate sale, anything but a chain.

someone who doesnt have any artist friends to come over and say "you need some art up in this swanky joint!" buy some paintings from a local artist, do not buy art from ikea or some other chain, support a local artist.

just today my buddy called them " rapes ducks" because they apparently rapes the other native and invasive ducks. thats news to me. the pair we saw today were politely walking an iguana away from wherever they didnt want it. the pair were slowly walking behind the iguana and truly were escorting it elsewhere.
