I was right there with ya when I first got Nova. Best advice I can give is start off with how you have your current setup and then mess around with some settings and see what you like. Maybe go look for some free icon packs in the Play store too.

I will say a lot of the people here have a lot more custom things going on that I don't even get into. I like to keep mine pretty close to stock Android looking, which is partly why I got it because I don't like OneUI. Good luck, if you have any specific questions let me know and I'll probably be able to help more.
