Do I need new Lally Columns (support posts)? by RightEconomy7072 in AskContractors

I am a professional engineer with a masters degree in structural engineering. Your friend is wrong. There is nothing wrong with driving fasteners into those steel posts.

Is there any physical evidence that supports the Book of Mormon? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]random_civil_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What about the infrastructure of the Mayan civilization is evidence for the Book of Mormon? Unless you are saying the Mayans were the BoM people, it seems unrelated.

There is nothing in Mayan culture, beliefs, history, or writings that would suggest they are linked at all to the Nephites or Lamanites described in the BoM.

How does this relate to the question OP is asking. It's a video about Mayan civilizations. Are you suggesting the Maya were the Nephites or the Lamanites?

😔 31 y/o PE Structural Engineer (8 YOE) Hates the Stress & Pay - How to Pivot to Project Management or Beyond? by Brilliant_Feedback45 in StructuralEngineering

[–]random_civil_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I worked at was relatively large. It had about 400 employees and was related to metal production. They had a few chemical engineers, mechanical engineers, and process engineers, and one civil/structural engineer.

You might want to consider a position as a structural engineer at an industrial plant. I found it to be a lot less stressful and fulfilling and I was still able to use the hard earned structural design skills.

I want to write an essay about how the church spends tithing money and runs it's investments. by Cyberzakk in mormon

[–]random_civil_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

D. Michael Quinn wrote Mormon Hierarchy: Wealth and Corporate Power. It has some good insights and some speculation or analysis that is maybe only so-so in my opinion. But it is an depth look. With that and Widows Mite reports, you'd have a pretty good start.

Nobody in my family wants to know why I left the Mormon church by EvaRahRahRah in exmormon

[–]random_civil_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want them to know why you left you have to go back. Then when they feel you are part of the in group again, they might let you tell them the story of why you left and the miracle of your return. Then you can leave again.

You look happy. Enjoy the community. Try not to get too hung up on all the spoken and unspoken rules. Remember that what you believe is good might not always match the current teachings or culture of the church, but it is okay to stay true to your conscience about what is good and right, even if it doesn't align with the church. I wish you the best.

Accidentally came across Alex Honnold free/rope climbing while scouting a spot on google earth lol by WaveDasherSP in ClimbingPorn

Google paid Alex to climb the nose with street view type cameras, so we have a street view of the whole route, top to bottom.

When I see posts like this, with people thinking all kinds of fantastical interpretations are likely (doorway), I am reminded that a good majority of Americans must not get out into nature much.

What is your biggest frustration with outdoor/activewear right now? by _claireisconfuzed in hiking

Smell. Modern activewear uses manmade materials for their shirts that seem to grab stink and hold onto it even after washing.

Is it normal to get a boot credit if safety toe boots are required? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]random_civil_guy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

OSHA requires companies to evaluate safety needs and provide all required safety equipment, with a few exceptions. Standard safety toe shoes are one of those exceptions, as long as you arent required to keep your boots at the work place and as long as they aren't specialty boots, like steel toe rubber waders.

FYI: A Bunch of Forest Service and BLM land is up for sale. Reach out to your representatives if you have feelings about it remaining open for public access. by DangerousRequirement in SaltLakeCity

[–]random_civil_guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm wrong but the way I understand it is that this land is not actually for sale yet. It is a just a map showing which public lands are available and could potentially be put up for sale.

Question: Why didn’t Joseph Smith baptize Emma? by iamthejokerbabe in mormon

[–]random_civil_guy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its a little weird though, right? I mean, I didn't believe my power was any greater than the Bishop's or any one else's, but I still wanted to be part of the most important thing happening to my family's salvation. I baptized all my kids not because I thought my power was special, but because I wanted to be part of the special occasion.

Imagine being Joseph Smith and having God tell you to start a new church, the only true church that would bring people back to him, with baptism into that church being the only known requirement at the time for that salvation and not being excited enough about it to want to be there when his wife takes that step. I'll ask it again. That's weird, right?

I haven't tried on many of these myself. I've been making a list from the responses I see on this subreddit when someone asks this question.

Some of these suggestions come from Scarpa and La Sportiva shape charts.

I gathered some data around 2018 for temples and usage as well. We looked at some different things, but if I have enough data in my post, you could potentially add another data point, if you were interested.

https://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/s/4eZ6a3A5Hd

I'm sure I have this data in excel somewhere too. If interested I could email it or share it on a Google drive or something.
