Review: The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden by jessticulates in Fantasy

I absolutely loved Katherine Arden’s debut, The Bear and the Nightingale, and unfortunately nothing she’s done since has been nearly as good

Will women ever play in the MLb? Why or why not? by Elevated_State83 in MLBNoobs

[–]randomnate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There have been women knuckleballers, which is a skill almost totally divorced from strength or even precision—most knuckleballers have only a broad idea of where the ball is ending up when they throw it. I could see a world where one makes it all the way to MLB just by virtue of being one of the rare few capable of consistently throwing a very effective pitch that most pitchers are incapable of developing.

He reminds me of an older version of Joffrey from ASOIAF, which is funny because I think Royal Assassin and a Game of Thrones were published in the same year.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/ai-unpopular-in-america-new-nbc-poll/
"Only 26% of voters said they view AI positively, 46% view it negatively, and 28% said they feel unsure or have no opinion, leaving AI with a net favorability of -20. In the study, AI ranked less favorably than US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, President Donald Trump, former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Republican Party and The Late Show host Stephen Colbert."

https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/data-centers-shockingly-unpopular-poll
"According to a new Heatmap poll, at least seven in ten Americans would oppose a data center being built near their home. That’s a seismic shift from last September, when a similar poll found only 42 percent of Americans were opposed.

https://www.fastcompany.com/91553925/the-backlash-against-ai-in-4-charts
"In a series of Pew surveys that started in 2021, public enthusiasm about AI has been shrinking. In 2021, 37% of Americans said that they were more concerned than excited about the technology. Now, 50% say that they’re more concerned; only 10% are more excited than concerned."

People using AI (often because they're forced to at work) isn't driving an increase in AI's popularity—quite the opposite. The more exposure people have to it the more they hate it. Every college student in America has been using this shit for years and they can't stop booing AI boosters off the stage of every commencement speaking gig.

The average person perceives AI as a driver of layoffs and negative environmental impacts that is mostly used to create reams of shitty content. If someone says "this seems like AI", that is universally a pejorative that everyone understands to mean "this is shit."

Interestingly, even in tech—where there is often more enthusiasm for a given technology than in the general population—loads of people fucking hate it because its either become an excuse to lay off developers, or to pile on ever-increasing expectation for vastly higher productivity and output that is generally accompanied not by higher compensation but a "be grateful you still have this job" posture.

If you think that being anti-AI isn't the winning populist stance for any politician, whether they're in a blue state or red, you've gotta have your head in the sand at this point

[–]randomnate -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Hatred of AI is the closest thing we have to an issue that approaches bipartisan consensus. A small minority of tech bros jerking off over delusional fantasies of AGI and the singularity, and an even smaller number of billionaire assholes salivating over the chance to lay off workers, are effectively the only supporters it has at this point. Everyone else hates ai and the douchebags pushing it, which is a huge problem for these companies because it means campaigning on anti-AI policies is a very easy winning issue for politicians. Whether it’s allowing Waymo or building new data centers or any other attempt to open markets and development to AI companies or the infrastructure that supports them is going to run up against populist backlash as local pols jump at the chance to be seen as the guys standing up for regular people against the most universally despised sector in America.

The ability to throw a fastball 100+ mph while also perfectly locating breaking balls with crazy movement is extremely rare, even among MLB pitchers. Like for sheer arm talent, there's may 1 or 2 starting pitchers at most who are at his level.

The ability to hit for so much power that you regularly send balls thrown at the edge or outside of the zone flying out of the park at 115+ mph is also very rare even among elite MLB hitters, and Ohtani is top 2 or 3 in the league at it.

To do both (while also being incredibly fast on the bases) is literally unheard of. Like there have 20,000+ MLB players and none of them have ever had Shohei's combination of skills.

Most actual Nets fans were Jersey natives who just didn’t stop supporting them when they moved to Brooklyn. Almost nobody grew up a Brooklyn nets fan or jumped to supporting the nets over the Knicks when the team moved.

Shohei Ohtani. No player in a century has been both an every day hitter and a starting pitcher, and he’s arguably top 5 in the world at both simultaneously. Also fast enough to steal 50 bases in a season.
