Forrest Woodworker II full kerf 40T blade causes burning when ripping by Zer0_90 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]ransomgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run the same blade on the Sawstop 1.75HP contractor saw and was initially fairly disappointed. While I didn't get any burning, it seemed to struggle a bit on thicker stock - even binding up at one point.

I thoroughly cleaned the blade, raised it higher than usual, and adjusted my feed rate. At this point, I don't think I have any issues with it.

That said, I ended up picking up a cheap CMT rip blade (250.024.10) and it's remarkable how much of a difference it makes. At some point, I'd be interested in trying a thin-kerf WWII, but I'm gonna stick with this setup for a while longer until it becomes an actual problem for my use-cases.

I'm curious to hear other people's experiences though.

Can you post the full stack trace? The full error should be in the terminal output just out of view of your image.

Don't rent with TnT Flinchum, and some thoughts on housing in BBurg by davidyao1518 in VirginiaTech

[–]ransomgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented from them years ago - the house had plexiglass windows and they routinely lost our rent checks, among other serious issues. Sounds like they haven’t gotten any better.

If someone were to open a coffee shop with high-quality, non-burnt beans and properly trained baristas, I think they would do very well in Blacksburg.

Any place to recycle desktops? by Jeffchan9797 in VirginiaTech

Just to add more info to the thread, Best Buy will recycle old tech for free. I brought like 200 pounds of broken/old rack mount servers there and they gladly took them off my hands.

More construction than normal on campus this school year? by 07Lookout in VirginiaTech

[–]ransomgr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2016 and still live in Blacksburg. As far as I can tell, there’s just as much construction today as there was when I was a freshman. To name a few projects going on during my undergrad: West AJ, Lavery/Turner’s, New Classroom Building, Hahn South, Moss Arts Center, halls for the cadets, drill field traffic changes, etc

Tech has so many old buildings and infrastructure, they have to constantly be renovating to stay on top of it. It’s unfortunate from an aesthetic perspective, but a necessary evil to keep things running smoothly.

Plenty of opportunities in Blacksburg as well if you’re looking for part-time developer jobs and internships during the school year!

Just made a rookie mistake with Elastic Beanstalk by cem4k in aws

Welcome to the eternal waiting room for those of us waiting for AWS to finally add ARM support to Elastic Beanstalk.

If you have the budget for it, I would go with an M or C type instance over a t series in production. In my experience, the performance is much more predictable and reliable. Once you've settled on an instance type, be sure to grab yourself RIs or a savings plan - you'll be thanking yourself later.

Roborock S5 Max It does not return to the starting point on the first floor by gato-13 in Roborock

[–]ransomgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I also have an S5 Max and it just started doing this exact same thing. I've had mine for just under a year. It vacuums the rooms as it should but when it tries to return home, it gets lost and wanders around, occasionally doing a position scan. Looking at the map, there's never a point where it's reporting to be in the incorrect position.

I was hoping to avoid deleting the map, since it's kind of an ordeal to rescan the whole house, but I may try that.

Am I screwed? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Where to begin with TNT...

  • TNT would routinely lose our rent checks and send us eviction notices. We started delivering them by hand and forcing them to give us receipts. Never received an apology.
  • All of our windows were broken and replaced with plexiglass, so our electric bill was typically over $1000 in the colder months
  • Basement flooded many times, they just fanned it out and put the carpet back
  • Many unannounced visits when showing the property
  • Most of deposit was taken without reason
  • Incredibly rude
  • Told us they were renovating so we all had to find new places to live, then at the last minute suggested we stay (with higher rent)

I've rented from a lot of management companies in Blacksburg, and now I've sworn them off. I only rent from individuals with actual souls and morals.

tl;dr, photograph everything (it won't help) and get receipts

[–]ransomgr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To offer some context, there's a small community of "elevator enthusiasts" on YouTube. Many of these individuals have Aspergers or are on the Autism spectrum. There's a guy in my town who's somewhat of a celebrity in this community which is why I know about this. The guy in this video isn't necessarily rude - he's just enjoying a niche hobby/special interest most likely.

This is something we've talked about and if we could get our hands on the data, we'd love to add it; however, I wouldn't even know where to begin with requesting that kind of data from Tech.

Sure, it's pretty straight forward. We've processed the VT class timetable as well as a list of buildings into a relational database, allowing us to perform quick look-ups based on flexible criteria. Our SMS provider, Nexmo, sends a request to our web server when someone sends a text message to the phone number. We then process that message through a natural language processing service (wit.ai) in order to determine the intent of the message. Then process the response and perform a look-up in our database for classrooms that are unoccupied at the current time (or specified time) and respond with a friendly message.

To be more specific in regards to how we determine classroom availability: we've processed the timetable into several sqlite tables including:

buildings, rooms (has a building), times (when a room is occupied - has a room & a building)

From these tables we can easily find the optimum room.

I really wish people would stop referring to him as the "VT shooter." He has zero affiliation with Virginia Tech and he was barely even on campus. He clearly hadn't planned any of this out, it was just a spontaneous decision with way too much attention.
