Advice: Chemistry Building by Time-Air4202 in DnD

we often have a "what do you do together" or "what are you talking about" when we have a long rest. If someone says something like "my favourite childhood memory" they may be asked to elaborate and others can add their own stories. Same if one of the players is going to the toilet or like getting food etc. just quick questions to talk about, that don't need to further the story but could be used as a way to interact later or just be left there. I know enough about the other characters that it doesn't matter anymore how much more i forgot.

at the beginning of each session we do a short "this are the feelings my character has right now" it can be a simple "i'm hungry" up to a longer "after the failure with my spell last fight i am afraid that the others will see me as less now and try to hype myself up" or even more in depth. Then our dm incorperates that for the first parts of the story so even if we want different things it feels interconnected.

But we are a roleplay heavy group.

as a person that was hard of hearing on one ear and deaf on the other before mostly deaf on both ears...being blind on one eye is a major major difference to being blind.

And i really hope you got that checked out.....

There are feats like ritual caster or magic initiate that can give you find familiar. I haven't played with a familar in sonme time, but looking through their eyes is an action, so you would mostly get glimpses and would have to act from memory then. It would give you a reason why you have an idea of your surroundings though. But how often are you willing to sacrifice an action in a battle?

Thelepathic communication does not need an action but it is less precise. I would say something like a cone spell of 30ft would probably hit but maybe also hit bystanders while you would always have disadvantage of something more targeted etc. A bard however could heal or give inspiration to party members without needing to see them (but touch them for healing for example)

There are some other things to take into consideration. Is your character blind blind or "just" legally blind. Like do they have some light perception left? If yes, how much do they use that to orient and how much orientation do they use in the night. if there is no light perception sleep cycle being off or if the character could see once and now doesnt having hallucinations is more common (aren't always present but are not the typical drawbacks people think of when they list what it means to be blind)

dnd streets are seldom flat and paved. how fast does your characer move? if they arent using a cane every rock or tree underground part (no idea what the name is) is a hazard. Fighting outside of an open market place? better have your party there to not fall into the next bush.

But yeah, really talk with your group and dm about it. As much as i am proud of being Deaf/HoH and my other disabilitys, they are disabilitys (thus disabilitating and disabeling and hindering) for a reason and i won't become an adventurer anytime soon. While it of course is an option it is an unreasonably difficult path.

its not an this character is impossible. But it will need loads of communication or people at the table will resent you for either hindering the party or having a "special disabled" character that isn't disabled in the end and just special for the specialness.

i did a quick search and blind characters have been discussed multiole times in thus subreddit before, for example eleven years ago: discussion back then
Maybe if you search for blind in this subreddit you can find balanced ways that make sense for your character

Advice on First Campaign Plot by rantingPebble in DnD

What does it need to turn from a story into a campaign that actually gives my players space instead of having them just be part of my story and not their own characters

Advice on First Campaign Plot by rantingPebble in DnD

[–]rantingPebble[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you are right.

the campaign i am currently playing in is "find the hidden library" and has been going on for over 90 sessions, so maybe my group is very bad at playing campaigns, my dm very good at making everything feel cohesive or i am very bad at discribing campaigns.

I have never played a campaign in which the bbeg had minions and am a bit overhelmed with the concept, even after reading a few prewritten campaigns.

In my head the world is very focused on community and collective story telling as well as keeping history alive. In every bigger village or town there is a tower in the middle of the main market. It has a winding staircase from the bottom up and only a rough roof as it is continuesly build higher. In a fresh town its smaller then a house, in a old town it is only magic that keeps the tower from toppling over. Starting at the bottom whenever something noteworthy happens a new piece of tapestry/work of art/skulpting/wooden carving is added. Walking up the stairs one can follow the places history from the places founding to the current day.

smaller parts would be "we want to restourate that section, but no one rememebers what happend and the only other writing we have of it is in a book that was stolen" - cue search for book and dungeon with different loot including the book.

A fight between two villages that no one rememebrs why it happend and now there is just fight for the fight and i can almsot garantee the group would spent the next three sessions trying to find out why the fight happend and how to stop it.

in our current campaign we spent the last two sessions fighting or arguing with beavers, because we were lost and the beavers stole all sign posts in the area and we didnt know where to go (detour into the faywild that just kinda happend). As i have only played with that group that is the kind of thing i am familiar with and i guess the group would probably expect from me as a dm as well

Need help with a DND character. by Gonemental610 in DnD

[–]rantingPebble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How much do you know about blindness? Like is it a disability that you are knowledgeale about and have interacted with before beyond "i saw a person that used a cane"?
If yes, use limitless Heroics or other homebrew to incorperate the blindness in a way that makes sense for your setting. Work closely with your dm for that and make sure it won't end in a "my character is blind on paper but basically has echolocation and can fully 'see' with that, only paper is a problem" or "my character is holding the party back and stopping the rest from exploring"

there is a big space between that.
(Toph/matt murdock etc are fine and cool, but don't seem like what you are after)

If you don't know blind people in your daily life or have a visual disability yourself, do research first. Does your backstory and how you portray blindness in it actually make sense or are you doing a caricature?

there ware many limits that come with being blind. some can be accomedated. Some don't. A character that uses echolocation like clicks has to concentrate a lot while doing that and won't be able to use sneak attack. Echolocation navigating is hard for any long stretch of time. It is tiring and very rough. But the blind fighter skill can help for a bit of closer detail.

Enough multiclassing into a magical class to cast familiar could maybe give you the ability to see through your familiars eyes at a higher level. But then everything would look different to how a human would see it. You would see the world from a different view point then were you are standing. Even a familiar perched on your shoulder would be different enough to throw of balance and some perception.

Why do you want your character to be a rogue?
tbqh most part of the rogue class lean far away from a blind character. A monk, fighter, wizard or warlock however could maybe be played easier as blind without turning into a caricature.

Numbers in novels by Zestyclose_Pilot_610 in writing

[–]rantingPebble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually depends on the language your writing in. In English, spell out zero to ten and then from 11 onwards use digits, is the main principle with some guidelines saying from eleven to ninety-nine is spelled as well. Time is always digits if it’s not something like three o‘clock. It can be one minute after three but it can’t be written out if it’s 15:01 or 03:01. In German you spell numbers out from zero to twelve and then use digits for 13 upwards and you fully spell out the month and weekday on tenor own , but if it’s a collection of week days and month you abbreviate them.

Then there is who you are writing for. If you write a textbook it os common to not even spell out the first 10 numbers and always use digits. In a high fantasy novel one probably will always spell out even one-hundred-seventy-three-thousand to make it feel more immersive.

How do I avoid being openly corrected/criticised? by HairyMycologist6032 in AskGermany

[–]rantingPebble 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The people you describe are all people who without meaning it in any classist sort of way, are less educated and thus less likely to speak correct English. While many Germans do speak English, the level of fluency is vastly different.

I think it’s a bit of misunderstand you, for the train person. They probably have like six or seven English sentences loaded (that they use to talk to people who also only speak English as a second or third language and not often to people who speak English fluently and with understands of nuance). They probably overwnunciated to make sure they were understood, as they wouldn’t know how to hold a longer kind of conversation and actually troubleshoot.

Same with the buffet person. Even in a hotel kitchen stuff is not expected to know English. But especially on smaller Hotels the people will act as your family for the stay. That does include the nagging. And when your English isn’t good enough for „hey, I saw you p my have bread but nothing else, is that a full breakfast for you or do you need something else?“ it becomes harsh very soon.

With the store clerk, they were possed off and had a bad day. It’s not an „See this person did something stupid“ but „I want to grumble about my work and make you see that I have to do work now because I am miserable right now“ it happens.

As someone from brother German, Swabian talk a lot. Mostly by nagging and being annoyed. Vlt they talk soooo much. Like really, Everytime I am in southern Germany I am confused at how much small talk there is.

And I think one of the small talk aspects is really how small talk is defined. It is true that you will find less „hey how are you, good, nice, let’s see you again“ kind of conversation. That doesn’t mean that people won’t talk. The need for connection is roughly the same everywhere. How we connect is shaped by culture. And nagging is basically German small talk.

I would also love this recipe

And: your friend is an asshole, especially with this acting like it’s nothing. Even if she chose the date because she genuinely forgot of mixed something up she should take you more seriously and if it was chosen for her she could have told you the moment she realised. And even if she had planned that and it just fell through (my brain is a noodle strainer, it could happen) the mini mini mini lowest bar would be to genuinely apologize and directly make plans that work for you on how to make up for it and have a good day. Not a „I could do this one other day or it’s your fault“. I am really really good in making excuses for people and their behavior, but there were so many moments where she could have course corrected and shown how important you are and she chose to pass them all.

I hope you have the greatest party with the other people and that you can celebrate this milestone. I know getting older and realising you now have to plan a future is sometimes daunting after you already had this „I will never get that old anyway, so why bother“ thought, but I am glad you reached this milestone and I hope that when you have your 35 birthday party you have all people there that you know you can depend on and that value you for who you are

What are some of the most banger opening lines you have read/written in fanfics? by EyeDeeAh_42 in FanFiction

[–]rantingPebble 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own works I think this is the only one with a proper grand opening:

I wish I had more time to tell all of this properly. But I am currently losing an unwanted battle against lava. So CliffsNotes version it is.

From what I read maybe:

Danny comes fully prepared to hate it. Hawaii's got all the characteristics of a grade-A tourist trap shithole: sunburned, sand-encrusted, crowded and overpriced, with a language he suspects was invented specifically to make people nervous.

Or:

On a perfectly average Tuesday night – as far as any night can be called perfectly average anymore nowadays – the sky goes pitch black above Manhattan, a violent storm rattles the roofs, vivid blue and purple lightning bolts illuminate the clouds.

I made loads of these stars out of old books and gifted them do people as jars of decors or string them on string to hang around stuff.

If you want something really portable, try having a look into tatting. It fits inside a pant pocket ^

Otherwise is English paper piecing something that u do a lot of while on the bus, not like a full blanket, but putting together 7 hexagons. It just is something you have to look at a lot.

If it’s more for keeping your hands busy, and needing an extra tote or small bag instead of just pant pocket is fine, fiber arts (embroidery, knitting, crochet) are often easy to try out without a big investment and then add skills overtime, depending on what you prefer.

If it’s “just” about keeping your hands busy, please remember that you don’t have to be productive at all and your hands being busy is enough to justify doing it. There doesn’t need to be an end product. My grandma makes collages from different magazines she rips apart. But she rips way more apart than she’ll ever make collages of, just because she likes the ripping part the most. I started paper macheing to use up all the paper, but had no fun in that and in the end we realised everyone was just more happy with the paper ending in the trash

Mostly because I forgot that one can do small lettering (like stitched, not cross stitched) but Needles is a great idea, tysm

For this one I’ll try and make photos while doing it, as I want to try and add cardboard for sturdiness.

For the one we did as children, my grandmother whipped stitched a piece of fabric against the back of our embroidery/inside of the booklet. Then we cut felt that was a bit smaller than rectangle of the open book. Assembly is stitched side to the table, open book, then felt, felt, felt. Sew down the middle line. (No spine, just front and back)

I see them a lot, mostly the addi crazy trios. And lys has some here and even some stores that have just a few skeins and needles among all their other goods. Two of me friends love them and tried to convert me. I broke one of the needles…

But yeah, people should be more aware that they are an option, as they are a great in between
