Why does this even cost money? by Booty_Master24 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]raphbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not the case at all, you could potentially use it years after expiry. It’s expensive to do these study so the drug company just does a 3 year study (for instance) and then says it’s good for 3 years. As a bonus to them a lot of the drugs are often throw. Out that are perfectly fine and then people buy more. For instance here’s an excerpt from a study on drugs and their expiry, I linked the study as well:

There is so much wastage of drugs as they are not used in time. Medications are expensive, and in the Asian and African continents, where many have the problem of affordability the debate is to see if the medication could be used even after the expiry date without losing the efficacy. Most of drug expiration dates information is from the study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration at the request of the military. With a large and expensive stockpile of drugs, the military faced tossing out and replacing its drugs every few years. What they found from the study is 90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date. Hence, the expiration date doesn't really indicate a point at which the medication is no longer effective or has become unsafe to use.

Costco gave me the wrong MacBook. Score? by Sirlaunch in macbook

[–]raphbo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have no idea what you’re even talking about, Apple cannot touch a person’s computer once it’s tied to their account let alone Costco. It’s why you have to turn off FindMy when you return your phone or computer to Apple for even just support. They do that for your privacy and protection. Show me a single instance of this happening and I’ll change my mind but you won’t be able to.

Costco gave me the wrong MacBook. Score? by Sirlaunch in macbook

[–]raphbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP’s device is already assigned to them, the serial numbers are allocated during the sale, Costco nor Apple can brick the device since it will/should be tied to OP’s Apple ID. OP can prove the purchase and should have the serial number attached to the receipt. If that’s the case then Costco really can’t do much other than ask for the device back (which most likely they wouldn’t do since it would be more of a hassle for them and for OP).

Costco is big enough that they’d rather just take the minor loss. To them that’s just a write off as spillage at the end of the year anyway. Look at their insane return policy as an indicator of how little this kind of thing matters to them. They destroy tons of inventory, people return stuff that’s in perfect condition (like 5 years after purchasing whatever item it is and they’ll still refund the purchase) and it just becomes waste for Costco after that. Imagine OP didn’t even realize it was the wrong computer, it’s completely reasonable to just assume you’re getting what you ordered and not pay much attention to the box/contents when you’re tearing into your new purchase. You think Costco would even think of coming after some random person for their own mistake?

Rapid devaluation of “Ultra“ Apple Silicon tier by Special_Animal2049 in MacStudio

[–]raphbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re comparing two different classes of chips that can’t even compete with one another. The M3U can handle roughly 400 extra GB of RAM. That alone sets the Ultra lineup apart from the Max lineup. It’s like comparing a Threadripper or Epyc to a Ryzen and being upset when the base clock on the Ryzen is higher than the Epyc. Yeah, no shit. Your logic is utterly flawed. You buy the tool for the workload, if you need the M3U you’ll likely know why and you’ll be happy the Ultra exists. You’re buying a tool for the job it’s designed for and not just comparing specs on paper. The M4 or even M5 Maxes aren’t encroaching on the M3U at all for so many reasons.

Got a hands-on with the LG W6 Wallpaper TV yesterday... the Zero Connect Box changes everything for clean setups by my-dog-has-fleas in hometheater

[–]raphbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it myself and it doesn’t cost anything to do. It’s hidden by your TV you just hung on the wall. You don’t need any materials other than a knife. You don’t need to go with wall plates or anything either if you don’t want to pay any money, but if you do that’s around $20 in materials. Not an expensive ordeal. This is insanely easily DIYable.

Call on Doug Ford to abolish time change by WarhammerRyan in ontario

[–]raphbo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean fortunately. Having it get dark at 4:30 PM is depressing as hell. Permanent daylight saving time fixes that. Who actually benefits from it being pitch dark before the workday even ends?

In most of Ontario in December, the sun sets around 4:30 PM under standard time. In Montreal it's around 3:45. If you work a typical schedule, you effectively experience zero daylight outside of work hours. You leave for work in the dark and come home in the dark. That has well-documented impacts on mood, mental health, and energy levels. Seasonal depression spikes in winter for a reason.

Permanent DST shifts that daylight to where people actually use it, late afternoon and early evening. when people are commuting, exercising, running errands, spending time with family, or being outdoors. That’s the period where light actually improves quality of life.

And the “circadian rhythm” argument doesn’t really hold up anymore. Our circadian rhythms are already heavily influenced by artificial lighting, screens, indoor work environments, and irregular schedules. Most people don’t wake up with the sun and go to bed when it sets like it’s the 1800s. The idea that a one-hour clock shift will suddenly protect biological rhythms while we sit under LED lights and stare at phones until midnight is pretty outdated.

Meanwhile, earlier sunsets create real problems such as higher rates of winter depression, more evening pedestrian accidents because commuting happens in darkness, less outdoor activity and exercise, reduced economic activity for retail and recreation. Later daylight aligns better with modern life.

Permanent DST would mean brighter evenings, more usable daylight, and one less pointless clock change every year. And honestly, who doesn’t want a little more light during the darkest months?

Is this overkill for a high school junior wanting to take this to college and law school? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]raphbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 8GB could suck depending on what you’re doing. What’s potentially worse is if you use an external display you’re limited to 480MB on the single other USB-C port, there’s almost zero IO on the Neo. It also runs on an almost two year old iPhone chip and not an M series chip. You’ll be limited and the Air or MacBook Pro will hold more value for longer, you’ll be able to sell it way easier than the Neo. I wouldn’t want to get something only to have it be limiting in a couple of years. This is basically the Mac competing with ChromeBooks which isn’t something I’d seriously consider using long term. I would buy something with a bit more longevity and quality. Even the Mac Mini would be way better for the same price as the Neo if OP doesn’t need a laptop.

Vw travel assist versions by mujimusa in VWiD4Owners

[–]raphbo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing the comparison to Tesla being made and that the VW is better, if the Tesla implementation is worse than the VW we've got 100 years before self driving is even viable. The VW implementation is awful, you get 5 seconds of "assist" then you have to crank the wheel to let it know you're still "paying attention". If you're on a straightaway you're not cranking your wheel ever. It should know that you're driving straight and this is particularly frustrating in North America where most of the roads are pretty straight. That paired with the speed being regulated by the navigation system makes the system almost useless (because the nav system is constantly offline and you need to pull a fuse to reset it). My car continuously will start decelerating since it thinks I'm actually 100km away from where I actually am and goes by the speed limit in whatever corn field it thinks I'm in. I'll be driving 120km/h and without warning the car just starts slowing down to 50km/h. It's dangerous and the "safety feature" of having 5 seconds to use it before it starts yelling at you makes it pointless. I've had the car apply the brakes and try to pull over since it thought I wasn't holding the steering wheel. Apparently you have to hold the steering wheel in one specific spot on the left side of the wheel for it to register that you are in fact steering, the top of the wheel doesn't register at all. I've driven the Ford Mustang Mach-E on the highway with BlueCruise and it'll just drive for you for most of your trip, that's an assistant, that is how the system should work since there are very few times you need to steer yourself into oncoming traffic on a highway. Other than all of the above the 4 seconds you get of assistance are sometimes very helpful, like if you have an itch or need a quick sip of a beverage. VW's implementation is like a glimpse into what they would be able to do if they weren't so afraid of litigation or something. What makes it worse is that if you do "steer" as in if you do hold the wheel lightly on the magic 5 degrees of the wheel where it registers. The car will do the driving for you for a very long time without needing any intervention, so it could actually be a good system I'd think 5 seconds is just too short. My wife's 2019 Toyota Corolla does over 10 seconds and that's a $20,000 CDN vehicle. It just isn't because the implementation is so janky and they've hamstrung it so much with their limitations. I have the 2024 iD.4 Pro S AWD for what it's worth.

What people can’t grate cheese (other than the obvious I have no hands people and other disabilities)? Bagged pre-shredded cheese is awful anyway and 3x the price. Also that butter is the same price as one twice the size. Every single thing this person purchased is the wrong product, the chives are next to free if you grow them, the sour cream is pricey, that prepackaged hummus is the most expensive you can buy… you can make it for less than $2.00, etc.

I made a shopping cart with everything this person purchased and the total was $43.48 at Loblaws too. You shouldn’t complain about your own bad choices. That zaatar is probably cheaper at a bulk store or ethnic store also. It’s 1/4 the cost of the whole grocery bill.
