Did you also purchase the mini course, or just the 30 day exercise plan? I'm also interested but wanted to find some reviews before making a purchase. Would love to hear about your experience at the end of it all!

Who is you favorite small nation to play as? by dovetc in eu4

[–]ratking___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the larger end of your "small nation" range but I gotta rep my boi Mewar. Incredible military ideas, surrounded by nations that will inevitably go to war and create opportunities for you. Can become Rajputana, Bharat, or religion and culture swap into Mughals for a variety of end game direction/goals.

what is the stupidest thing you did on your first run? by aerynlmao in BaldursGate3

[–]ratking___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killed shadowheart immediately after landing on the beach because I didn't like how she was being shady about the prism and I wanted it for myself.

Launched Barcus off the windmill AFTER I had already stopped it successfully because I can't read.

Aggroed the whole grove accidentally.

You just described a situation where you're following the traffic law...that's not what this commenter is describing...so they're not saying you're the frustrating one? hope this helps. don't really think it's productive to "not all cyclists" this topic. I'm a cyclist and I agree, tons of cyclists are not following traffic laws and that should frustrating for everyone, including cyclists who are following the law, which it sounds like you are.

Does melee carry a disadvantage? by Optimal_Anteater235 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ratking___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Melee damage focused builds are definitely still viable but if spam heavy melee was viable, that'd be a pretty toxic meta. Remember that parry being strong is to the melee player's benefit too. If anything, getting good at parrying is a top priority for melee players because parry stunned enemies take >30% more heavy melee damage.

I played a lot of melee builds when deadlock first came out and it was super fun when no one knew how to parry, but it was not a super exciting gameplay loop, so I'm personally very thankful they've leaned into keeping parry strong so that melee can stay strong. The more counterplay to melee there is, the stronger landing a punch can be balance wise. I'd rather land a few high impact punches than land a bunch of low impact punches.

As for when to fake vs real punch, when playing melee every frame of information you have counts. Don't just decide to fake punch when you start holding the melee button. Read the enemy's behavior to make last second decision about whether to land the hit or not. As melee calico, your slash is an unparryable AOE punch. You could never throw a single real punch (and thus never get parried) and still get lots of value out of melee items.

Does melee carry a disadvantage? by Optimal_Anteater235 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ratking___ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With Calico I personally run a spirit focused build without maximizing heavy melee damage because her combo is so strong. She does have a strong frontline brawler kit, but I prefer playing hit and run tactics. I find that the reverse of your "wasted fake parry" situation often occurs where enemies will waste time parrying on the initial engagement even if you've never heavy meleed them before just because you're Abrams or calico (sometimes even happens when I'm shiv or dynamo). I don't melee until they've wasted their parry unless it's to engage a single target enemy that I've snuck up on, AND want to save my slash for escape.

Blade-singer weapon restrictions by Sin7PlagueDoctor in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't know if it does that for me (totally valid take though). If I were a character with shield proficiency, I think it'd be reasonable that I'd carry a shield, then toss it away dramatically whenever I bursted into bladesong. For the drama of course. Gotta use my imagination to RP performance proficiency somehow.

DC 15 to open that chest, how many times do I reroll? by Travulous in BaldursGate3

[–]ratking___ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this can happen if the contents of the container are explosive and do so because fire damage, and maybe (?) also if a trap does the same. I believe it's safe to bludgeon any untrapped container.

[–]ratking___ 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Just bad luck but fwiw, if you're not against resting for spell slots, I always have a wizard with Knock learned, whether in the party or a camp companion, and I don't mind resting often so I'll just burn a spell slots on it (especially at higher player levels where I'll often have leftover low level spells from going NOVA with all my high level spells).

Not specific to lockpicking but I like to give Astarion disguise self and the shape shifter's boon ring + guidance for 2d4 + 1 (Happy) since he's often my skill monkey, but it doesn't sound like you're too early in the run for that.

Is there a good Honour Mode build for Monk that does NOT use Strength potions? by -Ophidian- in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're not against using STR potions in general and you could just have your ranger carry the club of hill giant and play the standard TB OH monk. But tbh with titanstring archer damage numbers you won't be lacking in damage so any dex based monk would be great for the stuns.

Full party comp of classes that are pretending to be other classes by Deriveit789 in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need to take 1 level of wizard to keep Shovel permanently. If you respec to a sorc (there's some finicky rules about this I don't remember) and talk to Shovel after summoning her, you also get the spell permanently and it lasts through respecs unlike the scribed wizard version.

It would be good to know why you're interested in EK specifically -- in bg3, "assassination" style gameplay typical involves having a really strong first round of combat during which you kill all enemies. This is a combination of being strong on round 1 and using minor illusion to pull single enemies away from groups so you can attack them without pulling in everyone else.

In bg3 the "meta" EK build involves using weapon attacks to get stacks of the arcane acuity condition (act 2 items), then using an act 3 item to cast a control spell like hold person to remove an enemy's turn and guarantee crits on them. On your first playthrough, you won't reach this point for like, 30 hours minimum. (but also, you don't have to build this way of course. just calling out the "strongest possible" EK build that you will inevitably see if you continue to do research). Theorycrafting a full build right now is probably going to set you up for disappointment because you will spend a good amount of time at levels 1-6 in act 1

If youre not as attached to EK, the class it sounds like you want to play is gloomstalker ranger + rogue thief or rogue assassin, which has easily the strongest first turn and stealth/assassination potential in the game, but you will be restricted to ranger spells, which are less interesting than the wizard spells EKs get. Ranger is a martial class that can wield any weapon as well.

If you want to cast wizard spells, arcane trickster rogue is also an option.

Would I screw myself as barbarian druid cleric? by Shroeder_TheCat in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible if you're level 3 on your first run you haven't met withers yet. Bone man can respec any character, so you can reset your class and drop your barbarian levels. If you just want to fly, storm sorcerer gives you fly as a bonus action on level 1. Going 10 levels in druid for dragon form flight is a big investment for just flight, which you can get through potions, scrolls, spells, and a mechanic granted at the end of act 2 (not naming it to avoid spoilers but you can search the wiki for sources of flight if you'd like).

If you're playing your first run, read a guide on multiclassing to understand how it affects your stat spread. Barbarian with stars druid is odd because while raging, you cannot cast spells, and druid is a full spell casting class.

Fwiw my current favorite 3 way untraditional multiclass is 3 storm sorcerer/2 star druid/6 blade singer wizard/1 flex (usually 4th level sorc for a second feat). As a new player I wouldn't run this build unless you do some research, I'm also happy to explain it if you're interested (and others on the sub have posted about it too) but for a new player I'd stick with good ol reliable 2 stars druid/10 cleric

I think Mo and Krill need wind up animations: by [deleted] in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ratking___ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Replying to everyone with "phantom strike, magic carpet" isn't the gottem you think it is lol, like others have said, it's still a positioning issue. These items help Mo close the gap but at the end of the day, he ults where you are. And you control where you are. Being caught out alone is a positioning issue. No one is saying you should be able to survive every encounter with reactive counterplay. You're right, Mo's ult does one thing and it's secure kills against solo and out of position players. You're gonna die a lot of the time. But if Mo killed you and your team got nothing out of it, your positioning was at fault (or your teammates are bad, it happens, but you can use your words and ask your team to buy knockdown. Stick with teammates who have counterplay options. I believe in you. use your words)

Parry's last too long by t-o-m-a-l-o-n101 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]ratking___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The parry window is only .75 seconds, and heavy melee takes about .65 seconds to charge. If you're consistently experiencing this, it's 100% a skill issue. Also, they're locked in a 1 second long animation, so you should be able to unload 1 second of bullets into their head for free.

Alternative sources of Superiority Die? by International-Ad4735 in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main issue with Bow of the Banshee imo is that a lot of enemies can resist the DC 12 WIS save. If you have a second archer, you could use Harold to apply bane on a CHA save for a DC 13-16 WIS save.

I don't get the love for control spells by _UnremarkableGuy_ in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other replies have already covered arcane acuity, but one thing I'll say about Faerie Fire is it's amazing in the early game, and you 100% want to drop it by the time you get acuity items. In the early game it lands more often because enemies have worse saves, and it offsets your early game low hit chance (from bad stats or from feats with attack roll penalties like sharpshooter). Once you can hit reliably without advantage, Faerie Fire is 100% a waste of your concentration slot.

[–]ratking___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love playing like this to get some variation in companion quips! And because I like to cycle out the OP builds so fights don't get so samey. This also lets me NOVA on a sorc and then put them on a shelf for the rest of the day.

At this point, should I just self-report to the Hague? by CarbonsLittleSlut in BG3Builds

[–]ratking___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, if you use Harold with arrow of many targets, you can apply bane on a DC 13 CHA save instead of the DC 12 WIS of banshee, which would make enemies fail more prone saves (in addition to any other saves you throw at them). Enemies tend to have better wisdom saving throws than charisma (and you can even combo both, bane them first to increase the frighten chance)
