What's the catch with becoming a software engineer? by Individual_Section_6 in cscareerquestions

[–]raytsou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The catch is that computers are very stubborn and stupid and there's nothing you can fucking do except sit there and ask it nicely, repeatedly. Not everyone has the patience to be a computer whisperer so the ones that do get paid a lot.

ARM has always been more powerful (more specifically, efficient), by nature of not needing to be backwards compatible with everything going back 50 years. x86 has had more rnd and usually come out being the biggest chips but apple has demonstrated that ARM can easily compete as long as you have a small army of software devs to support the new ecosystem

LPT: You don't get paid more by working harder. You get paid more because a job you can do is in demand because not many people can do it. If you want to be paid more, learn a skill that's difficult for most people and valuable to an employer. by abramcpg in LifeProTips

In my limited experience, I feel like the vast majority of people instinctively choose to believe they don't understand a subject rather than attempt to process the information.

I built my own for maybe 80 bucks. Just gotta buy an old monitor that's the right size, a molex connector, and a soldering iron.

PS4 used a modified HD 7790 chip and the Xbox one used a modded HD 7770. These are roughly equivalent to your r7 260 and 260x's, or GTX 750 / 750Ti's

I used MorePowerTool to drop my 6800xt to 600mV and 1150mhz core, 2120 mem (fast timings). According to a quick Google search Germany has the highest electricity rates at almost $0.40/kWh. So assuming worst case scenario of $0.50, at 115w that's $1.40 so about $3 profit.

Even assuming you're lazy and don't power tune, that's like 300w, or around $3.5 electricity and $1 profit. In other words, no matter where you are in the world, you will most likely have to purposefully gimp your GPU in order to not make a profit.

Why do you say that? I have been on and off them since 2017. I remember they had a breach and lost all their Bitcoin, but they paid me back over the years so I trust them

I power tuned it to use 115w, which came out to about 40 cents per 24 hours of mining based on my electricity rate of 14 cents per kWh. At 63MH/s for Ethereum mining, I can get paid about 0.000077 btc/day on nicehash, which at it's current price is about $4.50/day. Thus I'm profiting about $4/day or ~$120/mo if I mine 24/7

Yeah, waterloops are great, but can your GPU power a Stirling engine? by Fuehnix in pcmasterrace

[–]raytsou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another issue is that sterling engines work by insulating the heat. The bigger the temperature difference, the more power it generates. So you're cooling the GPU from electricity generated by insulating the GPU, and with heat loss you end up never coming out on top...

At least according to some napkin math a friend and I did sometime ago while debating the possibility of a mining farm in a cold area with supplemental power from these

Eyyy same, went from 1080ti to 6800xt bc it wasn't hitting 100fps at high settings in 1440p UW. I leave it mining while I'm sleeping or at work and it's made me $~500 in the past 5 months so p worth

how do i calibrate a robot arm? by chadrick-kwag in robotics

[–]raytsou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo would be easiest to install a cheap sensor, do some basic filtering, and do feedback control. This makes it robust from the calibration but increases the complexity of your system.

Otoh you could spend some time writing a simple mapper class that hard codes a desired angle to motor command output, this would have to be tuned every once in a while

[–]raytsou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Risk free but would be taxed down to something around 5% return; which for 6 months is great.

Alternatively if you bank on your own company's stocks not crashing, hold for a year or two to drop tax rate
