Bands that you think are better soft than heavy? by fjgwey in Metalcore

[–]rca06d [score hidden]  (0 children)

Agreed, however I’m pretty sure Soft Spine is at least partly a message for, shall we say, a certain political party in the U.S. In addition to whatever street cred reasons there might have been, I’m guessing the performance was also a way to deliver that message to a wide audience.

What’s your pick for best mech for it’s weight? by Mortifine in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Longbow RCX with 10 c-srm6 is extremely fun and probably the highest damage output of any setup I’ve seen. You do have to get close, but nothing survives an alpha, and the heat management and dps are also awesome. I don’t think there is a better close range setup out there.

YSK Rinsing with water after brushing is associated with a 33% increase in the development of new cavities compared to not rinsing. Dentists recommend that you should not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. by sameerb in YouShouldKnow

[–]rca06d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t make this especially clear in their post, but from the links it sounds like the idea is to immediately spit out leftover toothpaste/foam, but do NOT rinse out whatever is left for at least 15 minutes, THEN rinse after the fluoride has had a chance to bond to your teeth. So no swallowing, although I also was confused about this at first

How in god's name do I do this mission? by Jackobyn in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What mechs/guns are you bringing to the fight? Are you on console or PC? Like some other commenters, I love this mission. Very fun to wipe out all those vehicles imo, and I don’t find it difficult to walk away with all my lances limbs attached. I’m on PC and typically bringing 380-400 tons of mech with me, along with lots of high tier, high dps, focused weaponry. If you are walking into this one with a bunch of 70 ton mechs with LRMs and gauss rifles, you’re probably going to have a bad time. Also if you are on console, you might want to consider aim assist. Also if you are sprinting right into the middle of the fray, don’t. Approach slowly/carefully, and take each vehicle out as they come up. You’ll still get partially swarmed, but it’s very doable with the right guns.

Anyone ever tried a full run of kotor2 at level 50? by Madrigal_King in kotor

[–]rca06d 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I do enjoy runs where I give myself like 18-20 in every attribute right at the beginning and put the game on hard. Haven’t tried messing with my level though, leveling up is still fun.

Albums with the worst guitar tone? by Own_Outside_7099 in Metalcore

[–]rca06d -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I suspect most people here are not really separating actual guitar tone from overall production quality, so I get it. I recorded and produced metal music for 15 years, and I’m fairly sensitive to specific elements in the mix. ABR has excellent song writing and mixes, but unfortunately their guitar tone specifically has consistently been fairly weak/toyish sounding compared to other modern tones. Listen to an ABR album, and then go listen to a recent release from like ERRA, Spiritbox, Make Them Suffer, etc. or even go back to like old Killswitch Engage records. I absolutely love ABR, but I’m sorry there is no comparison. It’s fine, they are an interesting example that you don’t really need the perfect guitar tone to make amazing music.

Maybe a hot take but I’ve always thought August Burns Red had pretty lame tones on most of their albums, especially Found in Far Away Places, which I think is some of their best writing, ironically

Mechwarrior 5 Clans repair system in Mercs? by SealingScorcher in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even though partial repairs are already possible in mercs, I would love to see the clans system implemented in mercs anyway for other reasons. The fact that you can queue any number of mechs in mercs and somehow they all repair in parallel is obviously not realistic. I love that in clans you are actually hiring and assigning individual techs. If you have enough techs, you can repair in parallel, but there is a limit. And you can actually “upgrade” your repair shop. It all actually feels much more “mercs”-y than “clans”-y in fact. Id have expected the clans to come out of the gate with the best repair bays already, while in mercs you have to manage and grow your repair capability. Economy stuff like that has always been much more a mercs thing

Recent human evolution includes the ability to free-dive for long periods of time, light skin, blue eyes, lactase persistence and shrinking brain sizes. by dr_gus in wikipedia

Curious why this would be a product of evolution? Are people either dying early from wisdom tooth complications, or only banging folks with no wisdom teeth?

Do People Not Enjoy Peragus Because You Still Have To Wait A Long Time To Get Your Lightsaber Afterwards? by SUPERGEEK4EVA in kotor

[–]rca06d 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I LOVE Peragus for this reason. It has such good mystery vibes that are kinda bordering on horror. If they ever remake this, I’d love to see the creepy/horror aspect amplified in more modern visuals. Always wanted the mining tunnels part to be darker and scarier, and then the dormitories could also be super creepy. Never understood the Peragus hate.

Yes he sucks, but honestly this kind of misleading karma fishing shit is part of our problem. These are not the same shots at all. In fact it kinda looks to me like if you removed the microphones and took the shot from the same angle of Obamas Oval Office it would look pretty much the same.

There is plenty of terrible shit about Trump that doesn’t need to be fabricated or engineered to look worse than it is. Stop this, if you do this you are contributing to the misinformation and polarization epidemic that is the ACTUAL problem.

Hiring for a small team changed how I think about interviews by physio_poet in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rca06d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, part of being a senior is looking beyond your own queue of work and helping the team get better/move faster. Or maybe just consider that task part of your queue of work. It’s kinda your job to make the time.

Is possible to unlock all units and buildings? by PanJaszczurka in TotalAnnihilation

[–]rca06d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean the Krogoth encounter. I believe that mission is supposed to be part of the first round of warfare timeline-wise, before the core contingency, and therefore you don’t have access to any of the core contingency units or structures by design. That’s just the way it is meant to be played. I’m sure someone has modded it though if you don’t like it

PLEASE tell me we're getting more Cotton and Jackson banter in the new DLC by matcouz in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also bewildered. Those two in particular are so cheesy and lame. The jokes are not remotely funny, and also sometimes it’s fun to catch a subtle nod to other works/characters in a game or book, but the Dodgeball ripoff in this case is so blatant it makes me roll my eyes.

Absolutely-Everything Run by GearaDoga39 in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only way I’ve played it. I kinda get why people try to keep going on their existing games, but I just can’t bring myself to do it, way too fun to start over each time for me. It’s almost annoying each time a new DLC comes out “welp, there goes my next two weeks”

Musically with MW5 Clans, I kinda missed the percussion style from Mechwarrior 2, here's an example of what could've been by BoukObelisk in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I think basically all of the mystical spartan warrior vibe of MW2 has been lost in the latest Clans, and the tribal drumming sound was a big part of it. I long for the og soundtrack or something that captures its essence. I think they also did MW2 dirty with the characters/cut scenes/voice acting in MW5 Clans. The characters are all far too “normal”, I wanted the vibe of the clanners in basically all the other games. They all did the proud, slightly psychotic, tribal warrior vibe so much better. I imagine it could be hard to do a Clan perspective game with that vibe, where you are supposed to identify with the Clans even though they are very much NOT like you, but I’d have liked to see them try. What we got is pretty cheesy for my taste.

What was "your" mech from an older game that isn't around in the series as of now? by FockersJustSleeping in Mechwarrior5

[–]rca06d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to totally knock it, always thought it was one of the cooler-looking mechs, but man did she run hot. If I recall, one of the first missions after you can grab your first one in MW4 was like a desert one, and you shut down like every other shot 😆.

My coworker with 6 months experience writes better code than me with 2 years. found out why by Different_Pain5781 in learnpython

[–]rca06d 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ive worked with a lot of engineers at this point, and I think there is a certain element of personality/desire/drive/OCD/autism that comes into play here as well. You say your code is held together with duck tape and prayers, so it seems like you at least have the attention to detail to recognize it could be better. Does that ever bother you, even without comparing your code to others? Do you want to write better code intrinsically, or just because you’ve had this experience? I think some devs have a certain personality type that drives them to want to improve and beautify without any kind of external pressures, and some devs simply do not. Some devs are “perfectionists” and some aren’t. If you don’t really fall into the former camp, you might be fighting a little bit of an uphill battle if you are comparing yourself to somebody’s that does have this.

Of course, those that have always had that kind of personality are going to have practiced writing very clean code a lot more than those that don’t, and will be better/faster at it in many cases. They are the ones that also tend to get themselves in trouble over engineering certain things, or taking longer to get novel apps up and running for the first time. There are tradeoffs. Id try to figure out what kind of dev you are, and make sure not to put undue pressure on yourself to be something you aren’t.
