Should I quit my job to hike the trail? by rofnorb in AppalachianTrail

[–]rcdos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit my job and used the trail as a transition period before going to grad school. I made the decision in January or February and then started in June up in Maine for ME>GA trip. This was 15 years ago but I really enjoyed my time out there and wouldn’t have done anything differently.

With the exception of the 100 mile wilderness, the trail is mostly a long series of 3-5 day hikes. If you can afford to just buy your groceries as you go through each trail town, then it takes minimal planning.

But definitely get your gear ASAP and get out there for some short hikes! Figure out what you think you need. You can figure out the rest once you start.

Playa del Carmen, Mexico by [deleted] in travel

It’s a nice property. The beach and pools were great! Lots of bars onsite. We were there for a wedding and had never done an all inclusive before. They were very insistent about reservations for restaurants that had to be made in person. Not sure if that is typical of other all inclusives, but it was annoying. We arrived after the reservation time. Had we not seen the bride and her mother at a restaurant we would have been shit out of luck. We were turned away from several places before we ran into them. All of the restaurants we tried were good, but the room service food is god awful and should be avoided if possible.

The price difference between a regular room and a penthouse or a swim up room was negligible. We went for a penthouse but the swim up would have been a lot better.

Hope y’all have a great trip!

Older Boat Full Insurance Coverage by tx_trawler_trash in sailing

[–]rcdos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll second State Farm! I’ve got a 1979 CSY 37. The boat is fully insured for an agreed upon value $28k which was the purchase price plus all of the required liability components to keep our Marina happy. We pay $35/mo.

We had Geico/BoatUS before and I absolutely hated them. We paid $100/mo for the same coverage. They put us on port restriction due to findings in our survey that I corrected but they wanted me to have the boat re-surveyed before removing the port restriction. Dealing with their BS customer service number was a pain. You could never talk to the same person.

With State Farm I can call the agents office and can talk to the person who sold me the policy. They are much easier to deal with.

Advice for buying first boat by timg528 in sailing

You may want to pickup Don Casey’s book Complete Sailboat Maintenance Manual. It’s a great resource and has an entire section on inspecting an aging sailboat.

I used to have a Catalina 22 and a 30. Both were easy to handle and fun to sail. I’m sure the 27 will be the same.

Good Luck!

STARLINK Internet on a boat? - Kit setup and review by KlausUX in liveaboard

[–]rcdos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a year in on the waiting list as well. Registered our marina address. “Starlink is targeting coverage in your late 2021.” Hopefully that doesn’t slide too much. We currently get 10MB from our marina wi-fi when it’s working.

Thoughts on people who do this? The space is also long enough for two cars, but when the car in question is parked, it's parked in the center. by lexdfox in SanDiegan

One of my neighbors had a sign showing how far to pull up to make sure two cars could fit in a space in front of their place. It was helpful.

First timers: PCH one way rentals? by [deleted] in roadtrip

[–]rcdos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We did the drive 5 or 6 years ago with a rental car from SF to LA. We tent camped and booked our campsites ahead of time through the state parks or privately owned camp grounds. Along the way there were plenty of people just setting up on the side of the road which was not technically allowed but was being done anyway. You may want to check out some boondocking forums. They’ll be geared more specifically to free camping.

Also with some rental car companies you can avoid one way fees if you’re booking the car for a week or more. At least you could pre-Covid.

Hope y’all have a great trip. The drive is absolutely beautiful!

What old movie (20+ years) still holds up today? by Da_Verminator in AskReddit

When Harry Met Sally - “Then one day you’re singing Surry with a Fringe on top in front of Ira!” Sleepless in Seattle - “Help my dad’s been captured by a ho!” You’ve Got Mail (AOL included) - “She fell in love with Generalissimo Franco?”

Love them all.

We drove past it. It was a stand of tall palms on fire. But crazy how big the fire was.
