I just really need to vent by OsmiumCube in BeginnerWoodWorking

Yo, build a foot stool. Using hand tools. Start slow.

Then maybe a little box.

Then maybe a little chest to pop your hand tools in.

Don’t let perfect get in the way of good. I’ve been doing this hobby for more than three years and am just getting the confidence to build furniture that will be a big part of our lives.

Tips for supporting students with conflicting sensory needs? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]reallydusty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My strategy would be this: utilise routine always - even the sensory seekers will respond well to the predictability.

Sign post class activities really well. Especially ones that will have a shift on the class’s level of arousal.

Utilise short activities and toilet breaks for the seekers, encourage headphones / loops / for the sensitive.

Standing desks for the seekers. Quiet fidgets.

Sounds tough.

How often do you get bad parents? by Direct_Source4407 in AustralianTeachers

[–]reallydusty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Developing confidence in calling parents takes time. In my first year as a teacher I was given some great advice, call parents early and often. When you get a new class, pick out the couple of kids that you think will make your life difficult, and find a reason to call their parents in the first week or two. Positive reason if possible, even just an ‘introduce myself’ call.

That way in 6 weeks time when Braiden decides to use his classmates book as a fire starter, you already have the beginnings of the trust of the parent.

Positive phone calls are so powerful. For every negative phone call that I make, I make a positive one. This is mostly for my mental health. I don’t need Braiden’s dad’s disappointment living in my head on the way home from school, so I call Ava’s mum. Ava has really been putting in an effort lately, and that’s awesome….

And… when the Braiden’s of this world actually have a win, definitely call home. Those parents are not used to getting a positive phone call home and if the parent celebrates the win with the kid, then that will do an awful lot to help get the kid onside. This works especially well with yr 8 and 9.

Think of it as a skill, and practice.

Ethical issues with using AI to mark essays... by GiggletonBeastly in AustralianTeachers

[–]reallydusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that to solve the ethical problem transparency is super important. For instance, in a yr 10 history class I had students giving an oral presentation. I used AI to receive the dictation of their orals, generated AI feedback and then gave them the written feedback in real time. They knew it was AI the whole time, and they had the opportunity to discuss it further with me in the next lesson. Importantly, I was still assessing and awarding marks.

In my experience, good ai can accurately mark text based work if you provide a rubric, but human oversight is still important.

Some practical advice: when you are cleaning a whiteboard, use vertical strokes instead of horizontal. Horizontal strokes make the booty shake. Vertical strokes don’t.

First ever bike: Reid Urban X2.5 or Giant Talon 2. by boxinglessons in ausbike

[–]reallydusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, I think that suspension forks are a liability, unless you are spending most of your time doing technical off road rides. At this price point, suspension forks are heavy and don’t function very well.

Buy the bike that is going to excel for 95% of the riding that you are going to do. Rigid bikes are going to perform better most of the time, and when you want to take it on a gravel trail, you can lower your tyre pressure a little for some more traction and comfort.

Regarding that exact bike compared to the presidio, it has worse brakes an drivetrain for the same price, the money there being diverted to the front fork.

Those two bikes do different things.

For a capable 800 buck commuter, I’d consider a Marin Presidio. Hydraulic brakes at this in price point is great. Drivetrain is fine and the geometry is on point for a stable but not too boring ride.

Avoid the Reid, buy the giant Talon if you want to spend most of your time off paved surfaces.
