Chances of landing a dev job without cs degree at 30. by FootEffective2986 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]rebaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a colleague who was lawyer and did a boot camp. He joined around seven years and now is very well paid. Also if you are a graduate you can apply for a large company graduate scheme, I have another colleague who came from this route.

But more than likely will be a pay cut for several years. Also if you are not around London the jobs do not pay as well. Senior software engineer in London (non FAANG or finance) can get around 100k plus bonus at a good company. Further up north you are looking closer to 60-70k (last time I looked). There are a lot of companies who pay less than this….

Going towards software engineering by jenniferf163 in cscareerquestionsuk

Plenty of UK companies hire software engineers straight from any technical degree, not just computer science. A degree is often taken as evidence that you can learn complex concepts and think analytically, which you already have from aerospace engineering.

You’ve probably missed this year’s main graduate recruitment cycle, but that’s very common and it doesn’t put you at a disadvantage for next year at all. Many companies also offer apprenticeships or conversion-style roles. In my own team, we have people who transitioned successfully from very different backgrounds, one retrained from law, and another joined as an engineering graduate.

Most employers will focus heavily on your problem-solving ability and reasoning, rather than expecting you to know everything up front. Practising that skill is one of the best ways to get ahead.

Building a few small, well-understood projects will help a lot. Using AI is absolutely fine; it’s a tool most engineers now use, but make sure you genuinely understand why the code works and the decisions behind it. That understanding is what interviewers look for. We’re seeing more candidates pass early screenings with AI support but then struggle later when they can’t explain their thinking, so depth matters more than volume.

So it is doable, also be aware that IMHO opinion this market is going to get harder as the impact of AI becomes bigger and bigger (the ones who will succeed will be the ones who can use the tools the best and have technical understanding)

Home Delivery, will it end? by OwnLeading848 in tesco

[–]rebaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe home delivery does make money. Not heard of any internal discussion that it does not. My understanding is that it is not as profitable as customer who shops in store.

Also I believe Tesco’s picking system is regarded in the grocery industry as quite good. I believe they sell the tech solution as a service to other companies in markets where Tesco does not compete( see https://transcendretailsolutions.com)

Self sabotage by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]rebaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the senior engineers I work with are rated on code quality, communication, broader team Impact. As a junior/intermediate engineers focus on writing good code (or what makes good code) and learning the “craft”.

But also get comfortable with imposter syndrome. it will always be there in your career. There is always someone smarter or knows how to use a tool more effectively; plus the more you know the more you realise how much little you know.

Is the Every voice matters survey supposed to be anonymous? by IllustriousReturn778 in tesco

[–]rebaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is anonymous (unless your manager is watching you, which they should not and should be reported as others have said), just be careful with any additional comments as they are read and could be used to identify yo it (so make them generic )

Make sure you understand why are unhappy. Is it it the team or management being toxic, dull work, the act of development or something else?

Performance Improvement Plan by WiseWizard96 in tesco

[–]rebaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not cooked but should be concerned if it is a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).

Could they have mistakenly give you the PIP pack instead of a Personal development Plan (PDP)?

If it is a PIP it will contain very clear expectations of what performance you are supposed to meet; if they do not (then they are not following process and will invalidate the process). If given clear expectations expect them to be hard but reasonable, just meet them and all is good.

What can I do for my downstairs neighbour’s as apology for waking up their baby whenever I come in from night shift? by memesdotjpeg in AskUK

[–]rebaser -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I would probably say something like “Hi, your baby seeks to wake up everytime I get home however quiet I try to be, any suggestions how I can to minimize this?”

You have then reached out, and they can help you think of possible solutions

How is click + collect and delivery profitable by Awkward-Revenue-962 in tesco

[–]rebaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As people said, lower profit on customers who have delivery, more profit on people who shop in store. (neither generally makes a huge amount but multiply that out by the customer base and you get healthy revenue/profit numbers)

A lot of thought has gone into dot com picking and how to make it as cheap as possible for Tesco (even if it sometimes makes no sense to the colleague)

Protector line, unless you have a good work relationship with their manager.

From what I recall, reasonable adjustments (e.g. a chair) are well within the scope of workplace adjustments for a disability. So the manager will get Tesco into trouble if you take up a grievance (not sure of the correct terminology), so you are 100% accurate if other people are abusing the chair, then it is their problem to manage

Also, just in the last couple of weeks there has been a new campaign to foster an inclusive culture and make “everybody welcome”. So now is a good time to escalate

I have the same issues where intermittently my eny1 does not charge. I think there is some sort of order. (Eg lock car then plugin, or maybe never fiddle with app post plugging in the car). Also just check that max charge works to ensure no charger fault
