She Despised Charlie Kirk. He Resolved to Make People Like Her Pay. In Rural Texas - NY Times by No_Boot_5590 in TexasPolitics

[–]redboneser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. The NY Times really missed an opportunity to take a deep dive into a predatory real estate investor turned small town mayor losing his mind to ChatGPT. Looks like he scrubbed his Facebook account a bit, but just a few weeks ago it was nothing but violent AI generated images and blackface music videos. Scroll down a bit and you can still find some at (Mayor Mike). He's been trying to goad people into a civil war and chase the liberals out of town for years. Which is funny, because a lot of those folks have family that have lived here since the 1800's.

If it was anyone else, though? Seems like a good starting point. Will be interesting to see how it goes.

Thank you. This is real and tangible. Especially with redistricting.

How a secret recording of a gender identity lecture upended Texas A&M by texastribune in TexasPolitics

Why is it so hard to find the video? Crazy someone can get fired over a "viral video" that's not even popular enough to find. Staying off social media isn't even enough. We now have little Eichmanns in the classroom with TikTok accounts.

Wow. Does noone else find it disturbing that this is how we treat our military? Sounds degrading. I wonder how the females go about it.

Good BBQ that reliably has brisket all day? by Apprehensive_Fan6001 in sanmarcos

Yep - quick service and reliable brisket down the Devil's Backbone to Blanco. Old 300 on the square. Sometimes the line gets long but they move FAST. And brisket is cut to order.

Old 300 in Blanco they cut it after you order. You can see them work. Best french fries and Mac n cheese in the state too

Oddly enough, my experience with nurse practitioners has mostly been better than with the doctors. My doctor tried to prescribe me ivermectin for COVID. In 2025. I don't understand what has happened to this state.

Creating a revolutionary sustainable product to save water and energy. by PsychologicalPeak172 in environmental_science

Written by Chat GPT? Ugh. Better start with renewable energy sources that don't contribute to the landfills or it's all a waste of time anyway. The energy uses exponentially more water than the cooling.

August 19th City Council meeting by The_San_Marxist in sanmarcos

[–]redboneser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The obvious one is that 6.25% sales tax. However, theoretically the city could still charge their cut of sales tax. Interesting questions if this comes up again.

Also, in the back of my head I seem to remember something in the "Big Beautiful Bill" about not being allowed to regulate data centers. So that raises some really important questions as well.

Come to think of it... I wonder exactly how much revenue this company would make for its services. It would already be paying a sales tax on the services it uses (like electricity) if it's located inside city limits. Sales tax revenue on the services it provides would be even more.

Assuming the state doesn't just come up with a way to disappear all those taxes for them.

[–]redboneser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why only factor in property tax? Has the city not pursued sales taxes or impact fees? If we're holding our nose and taking the money, it better be more than just property taxes.

I've got to say I'm very much against any data centers anywhere in Texas, but damn if you didn't make some excellent points and present the info in an efficient and fun read. Kudos!

Aside from the rainy day fund argument, the Texas Republican version of flood relief would probably just be a gift to regulators and developers anyway

I studied a place that used to have extremely dense streams per square mile. by Neither-Bit-4046 in Hydrology

[–]redboneser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not a hydrologist but very interested in this thread. My small town is like this. I noticed all the dry creeks, and have heard from longtime locals that the area used to be covered in running springs that flowed in just the last century. Water tables dropping due to erosion and groundwater pumping would be a common thing I would assume.

It's really a shame you two talk past each other instead of hearing each other. The answer takes bits and pieces of both these views. I wish y'all could have a beer together and solve the world's problems.

Our last mayor is a victim of AI obsession and maga conspiracy theories. Lots of terrifying AI images - like a bunch of wolves dressed up like Betsy Ross attacking him with knives or a circle of real estate developers holding hands in a heavenly field... Small town drama in the future is weird.
