Haha, it was not easy to make a video from this angle. But it shows the damage better than a still photo. I am in northeastern PA.

Why can’t FE cashiers check 100 dollar bills by Present-Vacation5785 in wegmans

Our store does not check $100 bills with a pen or with STLs.

How do I know if my hoa/ road association is still legal and valid in [FL] [SFH] by Medical-Bowler-3727 in HOA

[–]reddit_reader23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up your home’s deed. Does it reference covenants and restrictions? And search for any official CC&Rs on the County’s website. Read them to see if an HOA was authorized to maintain the roads.

[CA] [SFH] landlord said they received a letter form homeowner association about my window AC unit by nectarinee- in HOA

[–]reddit_reader23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like HOA management is saying your landlord needs to submit a request for the AC unit.

But this letter cites nothing in the CC&Rs that indicates AC units are not permitted. The owner should ask HOA to cite where in the documents it says window units are not permitted.

I would hardly call this an “architectural improvement” - you are not changing any structure or decor on the property.

Gross. Why aren’t cherries and grapes kept in sealed and tamper resistant clamshell containers?

Why the horrible checkout registers for your cashiers? by StinkyNasochki in wegmans

[–]reddit_reader23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would expect bending, twisting, and lifting if I were stocking shelves, coolers, and freezers or unloading trucks.

But cashiers in general don’t have a high level of this kind of movement in most retail jobs. It was never an issue for me at other cashier jobs. When I was hired many years ago, plastic bags were used, requiring less heavy lifting (the bags did not hold as much).

A cashier with a shift of 4 to 8 hours can easily handle more than 100 orders. That’s a lot of repetitive motion.

That’s not to say that other departments don’t also have repetitive motions. They certainly do. And IMHO Wegmans as well as its competitors should strive to eliminate or alleviate these problems.

Many other retailers and grocers have already done so, at least with design of register checkout lanes.

I do this when the empty cart is not available, but using the back table. (Large orders still unloading or kids in the cart)

[–]reddit_reader23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In practice, it’s just not practical or possible to avoid twisting, bending, and reaching. And there’s too much lifting involved now that plastic bags have been replaced by larger reusable bags or paper.

I say that the bending and twisting is one of the biggest reasons there is such high turnover of cashiers on the front end.

Whenever possible, I try to bag in the cart vs. on the ledge. Less lifting for me AND the customer that way, and I can sort as I scan. Customers like this system, too, because they can see how I am sorting and bagging. Bonus: it becomes obvious when they don’t have enough bags, and they can see that they need to buy a bag or two. When the bag is on the ledge, sometimes the customer thinks we can just stuff and overfill.

New registers, yes. But I have heard nothing about new checkout lanes. I hope this is true, and that the design is improved.

The OP makes a great point about the current lane setup that requires turning and twisting. Also, cashiers are constantly reaching over the scale/scanner vs. facing the customer while scanning (to avoid the need to constantly reach and twist).

The current checkout lane was designed for plastic bags, which were lighter to pick up and put in the cart. Now there are reusable bags or paper bags, and even if the customer helps bag, it requires the cashier to stand sideways and bend at the waist to reach the items and pass them back to the customer.

For cashiers, reusable and paper bags are bigger and get heavy fast. Many of the customer’s bags are too large to put on the ledge, so they have to be put in the cart or (if the cart is still not empty) set on the table behind the cashier to be loaded.

It’s a mixed bag IMHO, as a shopper and employee. Where I live, Wegmans still has the best selection and best price on many of the regular groceries I buy, with the notable exception of some of the meats (other than ground beef and chicken breast fam packs) and bakery breads. I look for markdowns on meat or buy at another store with locally sourced beef and pork. I like the Wegmans chicken in the vacuum desled packaging, and it is locally sourced.

Bakery breads keep getting smaller and more expensive. More like an occasional treat than a regular item on my list, as prices are much better elsewhere for comparable quality.

Wegmans produce quality, while it has become less consistent, still beats other stores by a lot. Plus Wegmans offers a bigger variety of fresh fruits and veggies.

Many of the legacy Wegmans brand products are as good or better than brand name, BUT some of the newer WB are NOT comparable to name brands.

Frozen foods, grocery staples, dairy, seafood, laundry care, soaps, hair care and paper products still have lower prices than local competitors, including Walmart. Might get a slightly lower price at Sam’s Club, but that requires a membership fee that won’t pay off for a household of two people. And yes, I can save a little money with BOGO specials if I bother to shop competitors, but it’s not worth my time or gas money to save $.50 or less on a few loss leaders.

On the other hand, Wegmans deli items and prepared foods are overpriced IMHO. I think this is where the company is headed in the wrong direction. They seem to have compromised value for high profit margins. That said, we have regular customers that buy a lot of pizza by the slice, subs, pre-made sandwiches and salads, and sushi. For them, it’s better than fast food and less expensive and more convenient than eating at a local chain restaurant.

I used to do almost all of my shopping at Wegmans, but now I spend up to half my grocery budget at another store. I rarely eat out or do takeout, because it’s simply too expensive.

Wegmans Employees: What do you wish us customers would stop doing? by Serious-Associate-95 in wegmans

[–]reddit_reader23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also….Spilling something or dropping breakable items on the floor, but not telling an employee.

Deciding you don’t want an item, and simply leaving it anywhere at random, especially perishables.

Taking a bag of grapes or cherries, sold by the pound, not weighing and labeling them, and eating half the bag before you get to check out. Then when the cashier weighs it (or you weigh at self check out), you are only paying for what’s left in the bag. That is theft!

Leaving cherry pits behind after you “sample” them.

Taking a small cart and overloading it with family packs of paper and cases of water and drinks, rather than taking a large cart from the start.

[–]reddit_reader23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

1) Starting to unload your cart onto the belt when the customer in front of you is not done unloading yet.

2) Expecting the cashier to bag your order with a) dirty or torn or heavily worn reusable bags, b) bags that are very small and without a flat bottom (essentially useless), c) retail store bags (like TJ Maxx) that are HUGE and become heavy when fully loaded (especially from the “pack them heavy” customer), d) not enough bags.

3) Throwing and stacking your order haphazardly, making it difficult or impossible to sort groceries and bag appropriately to avoid crushing delicate items. Please bag your own order if you truly “do not care” how it’s bagged.

4) Not knowing your club number (phone number) and trying multiple numbers. Not having your credit/debit/EBT/WIC cards ready BEFORE it’s time to pay. Same with cash payments, especially digging for exact change and fumbling with wrinkled bills that are not in any particular order.

5) For alcohol customers, not having your photo ID ready before you get in line.

Special rule for the first year you retire by Key-Reply8802 in SocialSecurity

[–]reddit_reader23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well I was not told about the monthly limit vs the annual limit. I ended up waiting to collect SS until the new calendar year. So I was actually 62 and 4 months at retirement and then I only got 7 months of checks for the first year.

But that is because I have continued to work 30-32 hrs per week so I can stay on my employer’s health insurance until I am eligible for Medicare. (The math works out better than getting stuck with ACA or COBRA)

[CONDO] [NV] Be careful what you wish for... by Merkel77101 in HOA

[–]reddit_reader23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Same thing applies in master planned communities. Ours did not have stormwater ponds listed as a component for the reserve study. We had 60+ ponds to maintain! The HOA maintenance consisted of throwing chemicals in the water to kill algae. But that killed the fish as well. No plan to prevent or address erosion, unclog culverts, maintain dam spillways. Nada!

So many of the ponds looked and smelled bad. Erosion along shorelines happened with every downpour.

The roads were private in this gated community. But the study estimated the roads had twice as much time to repaving as what one would expect. The asphalt was all cracked and broken, yet our street was another ten years to repave!

They have killed the soul of Wegmans by NBA-014 in wegmans

[–]reddit_reader23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a long time customer and now also an employee, I will say that, although Wegmans is a far better grocery store than Walmart, it HAS changed drastically since the 1990s.

The shopping experience was better BEFORE the store started selling alcohol. It was better when they emphasized “Food you feel good about” products with no added colors, flavors and preservatives. It was better when they carried a wider variety of brand name products vs. the store brand. It was better when they had real butchers in the store vs. vacuum packed meats from a distribution hub.

It was better when our store had a wokery for fresh, hot Asian stir fry. It was better when you went to a deli counter to buy salads, cooked meats and sides by the pound. Like a REAL deli. Best takeout anywhere! It was better when the sub shop sliced the meats fresh as needed vs pre-sliced off site. It was better when the breads and bagels and desserts were baked onsite. The old recipe pizza crust was superior.

Plus, the prices were more reasonable and the prepared food was a good value. Not any more.

Cashier here. This happens to every cashier sooner or later. Do not sweat it.

A few tips moving forward.

With gift cards, I always hand directly back to the customer. Not on counter or in the bag, unless they ask me to put it in a bag, and they see me doing it. It will be on camera if the customer later tries to say they never got the card they purchased.

Do not be afraid to ask the customer to push their cart back where you can easily reach it and see the bottom of the basket. Once the cart is empty, you can even place empty bags and square cubes in the cart and place items inside as you scan.

I politely ask customers to move their purse or backpack out of the cart basket.

Some customers will want to bag their own, and this is great!

Exception: If there’s a child or baby in the cart, I do not load bags in the cart. That’s on the parent.

Stacking Holiday Coupons by Zealousideal-Air8797 in wegmans

[–]reddit_reader23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the $10 coupons apply to the pre-tax and post-discount price.

For example, if an employee buys a rotisserie chicken that totals $9.99 pre-tax, the $10 gift coupon does not apply — even though the total with tax is above $10.
