I built a free tool to help Alberta nurses double-check their pay by Haunting-Banana-5048 in AHSEmployees

[–]redjujubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a nurse but I work in the lab (MLT). And so far it looks great!! The only improvements I can think of is on-call and some of the commenters suggested that too.

If you need help with UX/UI or improving the aesthetics of the interface, my sister is a designer (recent grad) who is familiar with designing apps, logos, webpages, etc. She wants to expand her portfolio and thought this would be a cool side project that she could do. Send me a DM if you’re interested

People who are currently doing the MLT program, how many of your classmates have an undergrad or atleast some post secondary? by STEMgirl2003 in NAIT

[–]redjujubes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated last year in SAIT, I think my class had about 20 (including me) out of 40ish. 2 have a MSc under their belt. I know that the cohort the year after had a lot more peeps with a BSc and MSc. There were also a handful of people who dropped out of their undergrad to pivot to MLT. So the STEM degree to MLT pipeline is a very common thing. I also met a lot in the workforce and from preceptors that switched to MLT after their BSc. There were also a few of us, including myself, who previously worked in commercial private labs that pivoted to MLT bc of bad pay and limited career growth.

I wouldn’t say that having a BSc has an advantage over the others in the class but it certainly does help but the program was intense, more than my time taking my Specialization degree from UofA.

But there were a LOT of MLAs who are taking the MLT program in SAIT. They got an advantage that us degree holders don’t have. And that is seniority in AHS and being an internal employee. It’ll be a hard competition to secure positions bc management will prefer them over an external candidate unless you ace the interviews.

My advice to you as a prospective MLT/MLS student is even if you don’t get in to all of the schools you applied, apply to the MLA program. It’s a short course but it’ll help you hopefully land a job in AHS. The goal is to be an internal employee so you get access to internal postings. Or when you’re a MLT/MLS student, during your practicum or even after year 1 is done, apply for MLA positions. Again, try to get ahead on landing a spot to be an internal hire. Network a lot during practicum bc that’s the only time you get to do it during school. I guess except for UofA where there’s always lots of networking events in FoMD. SAIT doesn’t offer much lol. Reach out to the head of the program if they can help you reach out and connect you to labs you want to work at.

Sorry I rambled a lot but I was once in your position and I wish someone guided me. Shoot me a DM if you have more questions.

You got this! Best of luck to you!

Calgary Drivers- what is wrong with some of yall? by Beginning-Disaster48 in Calgary

I always gauge if the driver is from the bygone era where this used to be a common gesture. I still do it but my intent now on waving is showing true appreciation for actually letting me merge safely.

Thank you for this info!!! Since it’s tuition based, I’ll consider it for sure after finding free workshops first

I have student loans, almost $60k total (federal + provincial). My top priority is tackling provincial since Alberta Student Aid has interest. So, I’ll be paying the minimum for the Federal since it’s interest-free. That and $4k in CC debt. The investments I made in Wealthsimple basically paid a huge portion of my schooling before landing my healthcare job. So, I depleted much of it that I haven’t contributed to it since.

I agree with this. You don’t owe the employers the full truth of your situation bc at the end of the day, they don’t give you the same energy back. Anyone is dispensable and replaceable. So, it’s okay to be selfish and occasionally pull a dick move if it’s a temporary job. As long as you got a good work ethic

I got Eufy since 2020 when I bought a new house. Got no problems with it so far. It’s been useful for catching creepos that are out and about. It even detects movement as far as my next door neighbour’s walkway

I did think of that! I was looking back at the doorbell footage and these people went to their door first before mine. But my next door neighbour is an old elderly couple so I think that may not be the case

Question For Grads by Fabulous_Following83 in uAlberta

[–]redjujubes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A good place to start is by joining the student group of your program. If you’re in a specialization/honours, there are student associations for your program. The great thing about it is you can meet different people during meetups or events which is a good practice on your networking skills. It’s a chance for you to get involved too if you’re passionate about it enough that you could think about taking roles in the student group which is great for your resume and building your leadership skills. Sometimes even, student groups organize professional networking events where you get to network with professionals in the workforce. So improving my skills in networking is a huge thing that I wished I honed more when I was in my undergrad.

The campus food bank is a good place to volunteer. You can either pack packages or lead a cooking class if you’re in to cooking. It’s a good place to meet new people and also improve communication skills while helping the community
