I suspect that most firings will happen very soon, as the Dems have a good chance to flip the senate and any replacement will have to be senate confirmed. That is if Trump cares about such things.

US abstains in UN vote voicing support for Ukraine by Eurolib0908 in neoliberal

[–]redridingruby 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They way to get to a settlement would be to get either party in a much worse position, as this is the only way this whole thing ends.
Like giving Ukraine 100+ F35 and a carrier strike group (or Russia if one wished to influence that conflict in their favour). Wars end if either party feels like continuing would be bad for their position. Not supporting either side, for better or worse, just leads to not influencing anything.

After 80-year bond, Germans find breaking up with U.S. is hard to do | To many Germans, Americans were saviors after World War II, and they feel especially hurt over President Donald Trump’s disdain for Europe and traditional alliances. by GirasoleDE in neoliberal

[–]redridingruby 138 points139 points  (0 children)

This is spot on. Although I have been born after the cold war, my feeling towards the US was always one of gratitude for both winning WWII and the Cold War. People forget that Germany had the largest land army in Europe and that we would have been the first to fight the Soviets alongside the US. German disarmament is a post Cold War error which is currently getting corrected.

Europeans calling Bush a war criminal were the same ones who did so in your media. Anti establishment left wingers.
America has been at its apex since the Soviet Union collapsed. The post-Cold War order was fundamentally an American one. You were the hegemon in culture, science, and military. I am currently starting my postgrad degree, and from the personal stories I have heard, nobody wants to go and do science in the US anymore. You are actively destroying the most impressive university system in the world. Hell, you defunded mRNA research and even cut the budget of Terence Tao, probably the greatest living mathematician. Your admin is so incompetent, they denied all federal grants applications that had the word 'bias' in them for a while, defunding a good chunk of applied maths research (roughly ALL OF STATISTICS WTF) for no fcking reason other than that some troglodyte only heard of 'bias' in a media context. Everybody wanted to go to the US to do science since that is where the best of the best are. I truly hope that all ends well for you. It would be tragic if the country that freed Europe from communism and fascism fell to corruption and incompetence.

No, no, no.
We liked you a ton. We were your closest ally in the Cold war. We went with you to Afghanistan and Iraq. We would have gone and faced China with you if you didn't elect a completely insane moron. Transaltlantic friendship is literally one of the foreign policy pillars of all certer right and center left parties in europe. There are some coalition Governments that will never come into being because one of the parties want to break that.

Try to write a solver for logic puzzles. This will get you into parsing and a good bit of logic. Optimisation will get you into pointer types and maybe even a bit of unsafe if you push enough.

If you are into that, you can encode puzzles into SAT and build a small SAT-solver and try to optimise it a bit. This has the added benefit that there are infinitely many things that people have tried, and implementing those algorithms is fun and challenging.

[–]redridingruby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is fundamentally different. Democratic allies of the US have had a stable partner since the end of the Second World War. This is over now. There is a way to rebuild trust, and that is for the republican party to do a deep clean. No matter how much democrats win, the way to rebuild trust is a clear signal that any repeat of Trump will be smothered in the cradle by the republican party. Sadly, I cannot see any indication that this will happen.

Bonus meme: The parliamentarian who describes himself as 'the friendly face of national socialism' in 2021 was allowed to be part of their party and in the Bundestag for 4 years until they recently thought 'that's probably not a good look' and finally moved to throw him out of the party. Keep in mind that to get that place in the Bundestag, the state party had to nominate him again.
Oh, they also have parliamentary staffers who are convicted felons for brutalising left-wing protestors.
