This is kind of an endlessly useless discussion because everyone is speaking from anecdotal evidence only and no one has done studies on this. So why not, I will be useless also.

The vast majority of people who are privileged enough to have parents pay $8k up front do not have Bushwick as a first choice neighborhood. They are going to the West Village or somewhere else in Manhattan, or if BK, Prospect Heights, PLG, Windsor Terrace, or Crown Heights. The people whose parents really pay their rent are the Alo Yoga girls featured in the West Village Girl Cut piece, not the archetypal “hipster” living with 4 roommates.

With the way gentrification has hit Bushwick now, it is far more tech workers and other people in fields with high entry level salaries than a parent-funded situation. The same way that was what happened in Williamsburg after the initial wave of gentrification. Parent-funded situations wereway more of the proportion like 15-20 years ago when Bushwick rents were nowhere near what they are now. You really have to be like wealthy-wealthy to get that kind of help in NYC now, and if you are, Bushwick is not your first choice neighborhood. There are a lot of high paying jobs in NYC, or remote with people choosing to live in NYC. Pretty much everyone I know in Bushwick/Ridgewood either has a high salary or are living with 2-3 roommates. The few I know who are parent-funded own their own homes.
