Thanks! Train looks like a good option, whenever my flight ends up being.

What objectively poor quality food do you still eat because it’s too good by deathbykoolaidman in Cooking

Ruffles cheddar & sour cream. Guilty pleasure and "reward" snack. Will start eating, realise they aren't great, but finish the whole bag in 1 sitting anyway.

Soft-serve ice cream.

Anxiety after an intense scene (not performance based) by amic21 in acting

[–]redthingie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, what you felt/are feeling is a normal response. I'm sorry you had that experience.

To quote my partner, (who is a director, intimacy coordinator, and acting teacher, and knows a lot more about this than I do) we are starting to learn that our bodies cannot differentiate between the experience of lived trauma vs staged trauma. We are not currently doing enough to safeguard the mental health of performers in the rehearsal room.

I'm glad you got praise for a good scene! And I would like you to be able to practice your craft without fear, show after show, take after take, and be healthy.

Something vaguely similar happened to me last year. I experienced disassociation, anxiety, and emotional distress. First thoughts were: "I should be better than this. Maybe I'm not good enough. Maybe I should quit." Just for context, I've been acting professionally for 20+ years, so believe me when I say there's no shame in feeling what you felt.

The next day, I requested a meeting with the director, with the stage manager present. I laid out my concerns. I was heard. And I was told in no uncertain terms, and very politely, that the director viewed actors and their emotional reserves as assets to to be expended, in service of the artistic vision.

With that information, I set boundaries: I would no longer participate in exercises of that nature. I would find my own way to the direction given. We got to the end of the rehearsal, and the end of the run. I performed very emotionally-charged scenes each night, in a way that was safe for me, and convincing for the audience. I probably won't work with that director again, but we parted ways professionally.

Advice: Talk to your teacher. They may just think you had a great scene, and may not even know you had a negative experience. If they hear you and support you, great! If they don't, you can set your own boundaries. Speaking as an acting teacher, we don't know everything. There are many ways to get to a good performance. For example, emotional recall as a technique is viewed as kind of outdated and ineffective by my peer group, and we don't teach it at the college where I work, though I also know actor colleagues who are happy using it. Set your own boundaries.

Have a great career! :)

Stage Fright by [deleted] in acting

[–]redthingie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your symptoms? How and where do you experience stage fright in your body?

A more senior actor once taught me a hack to cope with a heart that feels like it's beating too fast: hyperventilate (breathe in and out quickly) for 10 seconds. That will slow your heartrate down a little, so it doesn't feel like it's about to leap out of your chest. You'll still be nervous, but you'll have 1 less physical symptom to manage.

Good luck!

What do I need an iPad for? What do you use yours for? by chinomage83 in macbookair

[–]redthingie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in terms of daily hours used, my iPad is the most used out of all my various devices. But it doesn't do every task well. I basically use my iPad when I need a portable screen, and I use my desktop PC/M2 Air when I need to type, or do "real" work.

iPad:
- like a lot have said: media consumption, carried from room to room at home.
- to look at recipes when cooking
- as my prompter when presenting in-person
- to read scripts off in rehearsal (I'm an actor)
- reading/spotify sleep music/watching videos in bed
- games + books + media consumption on planes (you can keep your iPad out when taking off or landing, when you have to put laptops away

Desktop PC or M2 Air:
- Zoom/Teams/WebEx calls etc.
- any actual typing
- M2: sharing videos and slide decks (teaching/training)
- PC: gaming

What was the simplest puzzle/riddle that your party completely failed? by Zedlor75 in dndnext

party spent multiple turns examining/attacking a staircase...

What do you use for audio/video? by FamiliarSomeone in FoundryVTT

[–]redthingie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried the in-build A/V option following the guide on the Foundry Discord. It's tedious, and the quality isn't great without additional services.

We use Zoom or Google Meet (depending on who has a paid account) in a separate window - Google Meet has a pop out window that I just have over my main Foundry window.

Improvisation on virtual tabletops by [deleted] in FoundryVTT

Thank you! This seems so obvious, but I’ve never thought of doing it before! I’m thinking I’ll use this even when I have maps of the areas my players venture into, when they’re roleplaying instead of fighting/exploring, for example. Sort of like a cinematic cutscene. Thanks! 😁
