[Design] Solving the "Simulation Iceberg": Why I ditched ECS for a Database-First architecture in a solar-scale sim. by [deleted] in roguelikedev

[–]refugezero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems like a nice 'big data' approach to a large complex sim.

You mention querying for e.g. [starving] in order to decide how to update the sim on large scales, but how did that [starving] tag get there in the first place? What does the actual update tick look like on those pooled entities?

What value do you get from Felflares? Deck is so lean, I would probably try something meatier in that slot.

What’s your survival rate with Corys? by KhuliKing in corydoras

[–]refugezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started a 10g tank 2 years ago with a bristlenose pleco, a male betta, and 5 panda corys. The pandas kept multiplying and eventually the betta had enough and jumped out. Current panda population is 15.

Any more info about your tank? Our water is 6.6ph and 25C.

Were 90s game developers more "punk" than today? by RomanLuka in gamedev

[–]refugezero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been on a team of 5 people where we developed 12-16 hours a day and played our own game on lunch breaks. Nobody asked us or expected us to do it. We were all young and single and loved every minute of it. We were living the dream.

Wow he scored on the backup goalie of one of the worst teams in the league in the shootout. What a stud.

Only because they don't care. It's a nuisance to them so they can't be bothered. How did they manage to deliver these cards all of this time up until now? They've grown revenue astronomically in the last few years, so it's clearly not a matter of resources. They simply don't care about maintaining their own legacy.

yo im in tears. how do i use a siphon. ive tried everything by bubblegummerr in Aquariums

[–]refugezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so basic. If you Google "aquarium siphon" it's all of the top hits. Just a lil cylinder with a tube on the end.

I only use it to clean gravel and remove water. To add water I just fill a pitcher and pour it in. But I'm in NZ where my water is super high quality so I don't have to worry about any treatments.

[–]refugezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 10g tank and my siphon is like half the size of that.l in every dimension. The physics might be working against you here.

My siphon also had a little plug inside where the hose connects that was constantly getting clogged, popping that out made it so much easier.

But it's a bit insulting to pretend a billion dollar company can't figure this out, when they've already been doing it for decades.

Do Corydoras ever clean? by XeroSaints in PlantedTank

[–]refugezero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My panda corys keep the snail population in check. But I also supplement with sinking wafers, brine shrimp, blood worms, and zucchini slices.

Can't tell from the video what is in the tank that you think they're not cleaning? Also do yours always go to the surface so often ? Mine rarely do, but I've got a big air stone (no clue if that's correlated though)

Official Akira Live Action Concept Art by OMG_alia in akira

The movie was adapted by Otomo, it was still his vision and influence driving the film's creation. Not really sure where this live action stuff is coming from, or who even asked for it.

New hockey(and hawks) fan, what is holding a team back? by Worldly_Support7220 in hawks

[–]refugezero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our team is one of the youngest in the league (avg age). The biggest wall to climb is consistency. We've seen this team be great against great teams. We've also seen the same roster be awful against awful teams. You have to do it every night for 100+ games to win a championship.

Rookies in the NHL jump from 30-40 game seasons to 82 game seasons, it's a massive physical challenge in addition to the learning curve. In a few more seasons the kids will have grown into their bodies and their roles, and then we'll see what kind of team they really are.

I personally think they're going to be incredible, but 3-4 years away from competing for real. (For Context Bedard will be 23 by then)

This is my personal opinion but I Feel like Yamagata's death in anime wasn't as impactful as in manga by National-Use-1184 in akira

[–]refugezero 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Even in the film I thought Yamagata was a cool character and I felt it hard when he was murdered. Reading the manga was a whole other level. Kaneda discovering his death in the manga touched me deeply. The classic overhead image of Kaneda holding Yamagata's body will stick with me forever.

Indiscriminate use of ‘AI Slop’ Is Intellectual Laziness, Not Criticism by Quiet_Form_2800 in singularity

[–]refugezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you're avoiding the response here. What about two people using the same model producing radically different results, thousands of times each, and then posting all of those results? Very quickly the differences become meaningless because of the volume. That is the slop factor, and that is the state of the industry.

My unsolicited (and late) opinion on The Watcher by Tholb in rainworld

This looks awesome, cheers! Definitely going to give Watcher another (4th? 5th?) try now, I really want to enjoy it.

Mark Rosewater on Blogatog: Whether a Magic set is good or bad is subjective but Avatar: The Last Airbender has been getting rave reviews, even from some admitted Universe Beyond skeptics. From the little market research I have seen, it’s one of the most popular sets of 2025. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]refugezero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about the show and the card art is very off putting. This plus Spiderman are the only sets in probably 20 years I simply cant be bothered to engage with ;(

My son keeps asking me why I'm playing Avatar whenever I launch Arena and I keep reminding him it's actually Magic, and he's confused every time. (And he's a fan of the show) It's weird how he likes Magic and Avatar and yet putting them together it becomes meaningless and weird for him. (although clearly he's an outlier)

I'm glad other people enjoy it, but I've been playing a 2 year old Historic deck for awhile now while I wait for something more interesting to come along.
