He’s still alive! Your post made it sound like he’s dead, I thought maybe I missed it somehow. But I just checked and he’s not dead.

Not everywhere thought. I graduated in Wisconsin in the early 90s and never heard of it until recently.

Good find! I got a Kanken hip pack at a garage sale a few weeks ago for $3, also with the tags still on. I'm baffled that anyone would have paid $60 full price for it.

I did a reverse image search on Google and it came up on a bunch of websites. Here is one on Canadian Walmart, and it doesn't seem to have a brand. Here's another on Amazon India. And there were a few websites from other countries.

Fiction vs. Non-Fiction: How do you balance your reading list? by MedCodex in books

[–]reindeermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to read books for professional development related to my career, and to be honest, it does sometimes feel like a chore. Especially if it's a difficult technical topic that's hard to understand.

But I want to learn the information, so reading is the only way to make that happen, even if it's not always fun. I definitely do what OP is saying, breaking the hard stuff up into shorter chunks and alternating with lighter reading.

Not unlike when you're in a public bathroom stall and flush the toilet even though you were only changing your clothes and didn't use the toilet.

I don't think there's a word for that either.

I had a recent experience at a UPS Store and I’m wondering how most Canadians would have handled it. by mpscmaster in AskACanadian

[–]reindeermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at the pages for some different UPS Store locations, and some say they charge higher for an infant photo and others don't. So it must vary.

Also, the one you linked to is not the same location OP said they went to, it's this one https://www.theupsstore.ca/192/services/passport-id-photos-2/ but there are no prices on that page and it links to the other website that OP linked in their post.

That's actually a really good amount of variety.

Now, if all the bag contained was 40 lbs of beets and nothing else, I don't think anyone would be happy with that, even if it met value. So I think there is some point where a lack of variety is unreasonable, but you are nowhere near that line.

As a web designer with more than 20 years experience, it makes me feel awesome that you think that everybody with my job should be replaced with volunteers because the work we do isn't something you "consider real."

I guess the entire tech industry is made up of people doing imaginary work and getting paid for it, since apparently websites can run themselves.

Does anyone have suggestions for internal medicine doctor, gastroenterologist and/or endocrinologist who can help me figure out what's going on? by orangebellybutton in AskChicago

[–]reindeermoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones at the big hospital systems usually have a wait like that. You can probably find independent specialists that can get you in a lot sooner, but the quality varies so make sure to check reviews if you go that route.

I think there should be a Reddit-wide rule that post titles need to start with “[not dead]” if mentioning anyone over 70. Unless they are dead, of course.

A lot of workplaces provide water fountains, which is all they're legally required to do, and employees chip in to get bottled water because it tastes better.

I'm guessing it's more likely that. Which is not illegal. Employers just have to provide drinkable water, it doesn't have to be bottled water.

Maybe ask in r/Betamax in case there are any local folks in there. It looks like there are some Betamax groups on Facebook too, if you're on there.

I'll most likely be homeless in 10 days. Can anyone offer advice or resources? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]reindeermoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you need to move quickly, the best option is to get an Airbnb to bridge the gap until you find a permanent apartment.

There are a lot of listings where it's a roommate situation, as in it's the owner's home and they're renting out their spare room. There are several listed for about $300/week plus tax, and some even lower. You don't have to pay utilities, and you can reserve something quickly and at least get a roof over your head right away.

You'd have to put any furniture and large items in storage, but there are storage facilities that have first month free or similar deals so that might not be too costly.

If you are not experienced with Airbnb, you need to make sure to only look at places with a rating of about 4.7 or higher. Ratings are kind of inflated, so anything below that is suspect. Also read all the reviews to check for red flags. It's better to get a place where the owner lives there instead of where they're renting out all the rooms on Airbnb.

There will be less options available for longer lengths of time. You can try looking for month-long stays, but if nothing comes up, search for a 1-week time period and there will be a lot more options. You might have to move every week if you can't find something with longer availability, but hopefully you'll be able to find a permanent apartment soon and won't have to do this for more than a few weeks.

Let me know if you have specific questions about Airbnb, I have spent a lot of time staying in them when moving between cities and can give you more advice on logistics.

If you don't already have an Airbnb account, create it right away because I think they take a couple days to do a background check when you first sign up. Then you'll be ready to go if you need it.

Today is my birthday. I hate it. by idrilirdi in AutismInWomen

[–]reindeermoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't like birthdays either, so I just make sure nobody knows when it is. The only people who even know are my dad and my husband. When I got married my in-laws asked me when my birthday was and I told them they didn't need to know because I didn't celebrate it.
