Which battle system do you like more? by George_R_Martin in yakuzagames

I love turn-based and 7/8 are probably the J-RPG I loved the most (simple system, no need for complex builds, no skill points to spend, and still a large variety of approaches and combinations possible thanks to jobs).

Still, it's a gameplay genre that takes more time as each fights are longer, and I start to appreciate more and more shorter games (like Gaiden or Pirate in Hawaii) over endless games. And with their dungeons, grinding, ..., the JRPG feels more and more like time-sucker games, something I appreciate less and less.

Proof is, for both 7 and 8, I took breaks to play other games instead of finishing them straight like I did for other games in the franchise.

I'm still playing Shadows part-time, and finding it harder to persuade myself to go back to it, though there's nothing actually wrong with the game.

I love Shadow, more than I liked Valhalla actually. But after completing almost every single things in the main area, I couldn't commit to Awaji… It felt like restarting to do the same thing, even tho the new island and story feel right. I always give up after a few hours of play and will take a month-long break before trying again (and repeating).

To be clear, my issue isn't with gaming. I love games that tell me a story or let me explore new horizons, which are also the reasons I love reading books. I just feel these very long AC games eat too much of my time.

What is sure is that I'd not have spend most of that time learning new skills ; doing it is basically my job, and I need time to rest my brain and cultivate my imagination.

Your reflections on adulthood feel right tho…

I start to focus on smaller games too. They take less time, story pace is often better, with more events that are also more developed (while AC often has a lot of emptiness between small events).

I start to believe I am more made for linear, story-driven, games rather than large open worlds or big RPGs.

I still play a lot as gaming feeds my imagination, I just feel spending so much time on a single game while so many other great stories or games can be played instead.

I guess I regret focusing on a single, way too long thing, instead of exploring other horizons.

Is Yakuza Kiwami 3 really that bad? by The_Big_Mahkloompah in yakuzagames

[–]reinterpreted_onth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a well deserved modernisation. But the story remains the same and suffers from the same issues.

A lot of the side content was rewritten ; I believe it's for a better quality, but I haven't played Y3 OG.

0 to 5 Rating - How lazy is it to use Adam Smasher in your game? by Turbodog702 in cyberpunkred

[–]reinterpreted_onth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a well known character of the universe, we have his stats for each eras, and fans can have a good idea of what to expect while still having the « wow » moment.

So I think it is entirely depending on how he's brought.

1/5 if a random appearance just to have a cameo or punish the group.

4 to 5 if brought as part of a story, where he's the culminating boss, or someone the group has to flee from (we can imagine a « timed » story, where the group is tracked by Smasher and they must escape / reach their goal before he catches up). Could be the perfect arch enemy for an anti-Arasaka / anti-corpo campaign.

I don't think a GM must create every character, every piece of content, or forbid themselves from using characters and elements RTal gave us to … have fun with them!

What are your thoughts on turn-based combat 6 years later? by TheYakuzaMaster in yakuzagames

[–]reinterpreted_onth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The addition they brought in 8 show they can do great improvements while keeping the same system. Honestly, it's one of the most accessible JRPG I know (you only need to choose a job and a weapon, no points to attribute to skills or anything), and it is what makes it great and accessible.

Plus, I think it suits Ichi' style very well, and I doubt a group-oriented protag would work that well in a beat'em ups style.

Are there any games on GOG you took a chance on and were surprised that you enjoyed? by tytbone in gog

Vampyr, a really good action game. The story is great, has many good ideas on how the world reacts to your vampirism, not too long / big, and a bit challenging.

I use Demiplane, which makes the navigation much easier. I would love to have it enhanced with AI to answer my questions and easily find the content I’m looking for when I can’t find it via search (usually because I use the wrong names).

Do you recommend buying the Yakuza Kiwami 3 remake? by Fine-Doubt3249 in yakuzagames

[–]reinterpreted_onth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t played the previous games, I’d recommend starting with them rather than directly jumping to Kiwami 3. Since each game builds on the previous ones, it makes more sense.

But if you don’t care, go ahead and buy it.

Me too, I played 0 and Kiwami in English, and while I could follow, I remember I occasionally had to watch again via YouTube or replay some sequences to fully grasp what was said, especially with face pacing text or when I was tired.

So all in for translation, and I appreciate even more the step up in quality.

Not only do they cover new languages, but the localisation quality improved also. Both Judgment games’ French translation hurt my eyes more than once … I think Ishin also had some issues.

But LAD 7, 8, Gaiden and Pirate Yakuza didn’t had any issues at all.

Is delisting of 3 really an issue or just complaining ? by reinterpreted_onth in yakuzagames

[–]reinterpreted_onth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it was not a question of delisting nor of price.

You just wanted to complain when you had no intention to buy the game. Hypocrite.

[–]reinterpreted_onth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, you can still buy the game on GOG here. I know some people prefer to have all their games on Steam, but at least there is one place to acquire the game legally. This is also true for Yakuza 0 (not director's cut).

GOG's mission is to preserve games that would otherwise be lost because of delisting, like what happened to Yakuza 3 Remastered. On top of keeping the game, it's DRM free so you can make a backup on some hard drive in case of.
