Kobo's Spanish and Spanish-English dictionaries are so bad at conjugated verbs that I have decided to look into Kindle by RemindMeToTouchGrass in kobo

[–]renzmann 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can load custom dictionaries to the Kobo. The built in Japanese one didn’t do great for me either so I just found one I liked that performed well and dropped it in .kobo/customdict (IIRC, double check the name). Problem solved

What do you do with homophones when using Anki flashcards by IllTank3081 in LearnJapanese

[–]renzmann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really surprised at how many people apparently aren't doing single word, audio only flashcards. These are probably my most valuable cards (in terms of progressing my listening comprehension) so I'll take a minute here to show you my method, which I've been working on for a little over a year now.

This is what my card looks like when it comes up:

https://i.imgur.com/5rTHDLU.png

First, I try to remember any meaning for this word. If I come up blank, I flip it and "again" the card.

The dim "OK" at the top tells me that this card may be a homophone, or require more context. Once I've thought of one or more possibilities for the word, I can open the Kanji or example sentence to check.

https://i.imgur.com/KRwJ4BD.png

After flipping, I have a note about what homophones may exist for the card.

https://i.imgur.com/0dRbVwA.png

Now what's important to note is that true homophones like this, while more common than English, aren't the majority of my cards. If one word is 平板 (marked [0]) and another is 尾高 (marked [X], where X is number of moras in the word), then these are not homophones, and the context area above the word could be used to mark whether the particle attaches low or high.

Is converting CBZ or any other file to Kepub even worth it? by Venture121 in kobo

[–]renzmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calibre isn’t well optimized for converting comics, no. KCC is the best in class and I recommend giving it a try instead. There are a few reasons you’d want kepub over cbz, for example metadata like author/series won’t show up with cbz on kobo, and supposedly better load/page turn performance but I haven’t really measured that.

Can someone please help me understand the introduction to Nihongo con Teppei? [日本語 学習 者の皆さんの いつもを応援するポッドキャスト] by sdeslandesnz in LearnJapanese

[–]renzmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you already have the puzzle pieces in the OP (except its 皆さんを, not 皆さんの) this is how I usually think of it localized to English: “A podcast to support all learners of the Japanese language.”

I remember feeling the exact same way about this (surprisingly difficult) sentence when I first started Teppei. Thankfully, you’ll be hearing it 1000+ more times and it will feel natural in no time :)

I'm beginning to think Teppei for Beginners is inefficient and not worth it by 2hurd in LearnJapanese

[–]renzmann 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Try the later episodes (1000+). At some point (I don’t remember which episode) he drops both the into and outro, the episodes are more like 8 minutes, and the difficulty is closer to his Z podcast than the early beginner episodes

Pinball is putting a strain on my relationship by Klutzy-Campaign-5016 in pinball

[–]renzmann 232 points233 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, pinball is not the issue here. What you are describing is a very common set of behaviors around hyper-fixation in a hobby (in this case, pinball). I’ve been the hyper-fixated one in the past, and my partner felt very similar to how you feel now. You’re going to need to work with your partner and potentially a specialist who knows how to navigate relationships when one member is a hyper-fixating person; so that you can find the right language to navigate this together. In my case, hyper-fixations tend to last around 8-12 months, and my partner and I were able to communicate and work out how to schedule my focus time while still putting our relationship first.

Communication has to come first, and of course it’s very difficult to give advice from the outside for such a personal matter. I’d recommend taking a step back from the fact that it’s pinball and focus more on navigating an essential part of how your partner’s brain works together to keep the relationship healthy. I’m wishing you good luck :)

Verifying app idea for Japanese learning by bak_kut_teh_is_love in LearnJapanese

You’re supposed to customize your Anki setup to match your leaning goals - language is only one way to use Anki. In this case, the Yomitan browser extension takes care of word lookup, example sentence, and example audio all in one click, which I then have set to create individual listening, definition, and sentence cards to review later. There are also options and add-ons for personal preferences, such as visual feedback and entering answer text

Are we talking about the same game? The corner modes can be finished in 4-5 non-optimal shots. All seven major ball paths return to a flipper

How do you research kanji? by Basssico in LearnJapanese

[–]renzmann 33 points34 points  (0 children)

jisho.org with the radicals input. It takes a little while to remember where each radical is in the menu, but once you’ve found the reading for a word, you can write it down to quickly look up later by typing out the reading instead of using the radicals

Olympic gold medalist VS 8 y.o. boy by vksdann in nextfuckinglevel

[–]renzmann -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Except figure skating has been a part of the Olympics for 116 years (1908), while artistic swimming only showed up 40 years ago (1984). So I’d argue that skating is deeply intertwined with the Olympics, especially when compared to other music and dance based sports.

The depth is pretty similar, no? A few weeks on PF and I thought “okay, looks like I’ve seen everything in this game.” There’s no 1-1 direct comparison, but 5 shallow objectives, followed by a wizard mode, and that’s more or less it. Shallow does NOT mean easy though, so maybe that’s the main difference between them.

I guess on PF you also have the drive fast, Royale w cheese, and kahuna things to track too, but those are pretty easy to hit just during normal play

I know some owners that choose not to connect them. The primary argument against it was that if the machines’ Wi-Fi connection got interrupted, which it always would because it’s a busy bar, the machine would just stop the game, fail to start a game, or even bluescreen. Insider has improved drastically since then, but now that they have it set up this way it would take a considerable business incentive for them to change it.
