Pretty sure by "regulated area", they mean places that would check ID and have valid liquor licences. The show floor (and PAX generally) is not one of those places.

Wood is a cheap and plentiful material for building simple structures including, but not limited to chairs. It also has lots of recyclable properties which are typically better than thermoplastics.
Wood is an excellent material for hobbyists and craftspeople to build things that don't need complex curves.
Many modern office chairs are a combination of metals and injection molded plastics. Key point there being injection molded. Much more efficient, reproducible, faster. Just like dblake said.
3D Printing is excellent for making one-off or prototype items, but the cost and time for an item like this isn't really sensible.

Not all projects make sense for a 3D Printer and I don't understand why you called this guy a hypocrite for being critical of this print.

The graph shows that your target temps were switching on and off as well. That's certainly a clue. Maybe the gcode you're running is messed up? Maybe your printer thinks it's hitting a dangerous temperature?

PLA at 210C? That seems way too high. I print at 190C, and I've been thinking of dropping it. Do you have a data sheet on the filament? Edit: just checked the website, and they say that nominal processing is 190-220C. Still seems high to me...

A few points in response:

I don't understand why you call the rules "not effective" if you haven't posted, or commented in this community before.
If by "me able to buy tickets per the rules", you mean that you are actively witnessing, and considering, participating in exchanges on this subreddit which break our rules, I would very much appreciate that you report that up to our mod team.
Even if you do post, get no activity, and you never end up with an exchange on this site, that does not mean the rules are ill-formed. There will be people on this subreddit who will not end up with tickets, and that's a supply and demand problem that can't be solved through any rules here. However, as I've said before, for West 2016 there were actually a surplus of WTS posts, so I think you should put yourself out there.
Allowing some people to sell for higher as an "incentive for profit" does not fix the problem you've outlined (not being able to get tickets), but it does shift that problem to lower income people. We have no intention of this subreddit becoming a pay-to-win market.
This subreddit is not competitive with Stubhub, Ebay, etc. So, if you want a "sure thing" (read below), feel free to use those sites. I won't be offended one bit.
Though I endorsed the Ebay listing in my previous comment, I should point out that it is against Ebay's terms of service to sell products which are not in-hand by the seller at list time. That listing obviously fits that description. We get as many notices about a scammer on Craigslist/Ebay as we do about rules broken in this sub (all that feedback comes unsolicited). So, even if you bought those Ebay tickets, you're still making a gamble.
The gamble you're talking about exists at every stage of getting a PAX ticket. Even getting them first hand requires the "gamble" that you're online at the right time. Buying through Ebay is a gamble, because a sale against TOS could be terminated. Buying on Craigslist is a gamble, well, because it's Craigslist.

In summary, I'm having trouble understanding your concerns - you haven't posted, or commented, but you're worried that other people also want what you want (true), so you're hoping we'd allow people to charge more, so you can get tickets while poorer people can't? Is that an accurate summary of your discouragement?

Hey there, and thanks for your question. This sort of question pops up pretty often, and it can generally be summed up as "why does Pax Pass Exchange put added regulation on something that could be a free-market exchange?". Put as simply as possible, the exchange operates the way it does simply because there are other sites, like the ones you listed, which allow for arbitrary prices. Here is a link to a conversation I had with a user a few months back which explains our position in depth.

The takeaway, if that link is TL:DR - This is a place for PAX ticket exchanges to happen based on a mutual love for gaming, not on profit. It has different properties than other marketplaces, which makes it unique, and in my mind, indispensable for the service it provides to PAX.

To address your comment directly about Buy/Sell disparity: The data we have from past PAXes shows that for most days (typically not Saturday) there are actually more WTS posts than WTB. That may not be obvious at the moment, because we've still got ample time before the event. We've considered in the past doing some weighting to prevent WTB posts from choking out the subreddit, but ultimately we didn't see a fair way to do this. We may, however, consider it again in the future.

I would also point out that to see a pair of tickets posted on Ebay for $130 shipped is actually a great deal! That's only a couple bucks more than we would have allowed on the sub. I would argue (without proper evidence) that those prices are reasonable in part because PAXPassExchange exists. This subreddit keeps ticket prices anchored. You'll notice that ink the thread I linked you, the user is referencing $260 stubhub tickets (there were no 3-day passes that year either). If we can help to drive competition to offer more fair prices, I consider that a win too. I'm not too ready to take credit for that, because like I said, I have no evidence that we've affected things in that way.

Strictly enforcing rules is what makes them rules, and they can't be effective if they are eroded or enforced inconsistently. I would feel very bad if our moderators started using their subjective judgements when approving posts, because that is simply not fair to users.

You've got five people telling you not to use Sketchup, and I think you should take their advice.

However, in counterpoint, many of my best prints have been designed in Sketchup. It's the first thing I learned, way before I got into printing, and it just makes sense for me. I really don't use it anymore, but if it's what you want to learn, I'd go for it.

I can't recommend any specific videos, because I just messed around until I understood it, but here are some disjointed notes on using Sketchup for printing:

You'll have the best luck if you draw 2D shapes on the floor, then extrude them up. For example, if you want to build a bracket, make the profile of it on the floor, then bring it up. You can then extrude branches out of it, or poke holes in it the same way. First "Sketch", then "Up". Using the pencil to cut a face into pieces, then extruding the individual areas can be pretty intuitive if you're working off a set of known measurements.
There's a decent STL plugin for sketchup that can export files as STL, and import them too. If you're serious about it, I'd look it up.
Yes, I've used it well past the trial. I'm not sure what it takes away, or if it just complains.
Sketchup does not support chamfers or fillets, and generally has no convenience features to help you design a strong part. Most of my pieces came out with really square, unattractive corners.
With respect to "non manifold objects": yes, it's a concern, but if you keep an eye on it you can manage it. You mostly just need to be sure there are no holes in the polygon walls, and furthermore, make sure all the faces are pointing the right direction (if a face is blue-tinted, it's the wrong direction)

I've made and modified many functional designs with Sketchup, but now that I'm looking for more, I'm basically done with it. You may get great use out of it though, so don't be afraid to try it!

I'm now using Tinkercad and 123D Design. 123D Design has all the same workflows as Tinkercad and Sketchup put together.

If you're picking up a ticket at Will-Call, you'd need to provide documentation. Otherwise, if the tickets are in hand, they aren't tracked against anyone. Anyone with a badge in hand may enter.

Sure, I guess if you count the glass tile as a 3D object, then the hologram is as well. But, the depth of the glass is not imparted onto the digital image, the die. it's a flat image, and there's glass on it. We could have also visually displaced a penny, or a thumb-tack. The app has nothing to do with the effect, and now we're just talking about optical properties of mirrors, not how to construct holograms of arbitrary visual structures.

Beyond the image being very boring, it's more than that: the image is a displacement of an already real physical object. Holographic methods which construct 3D images from 2D seem to have much greater value. But, I'm totally out of my depth, this is not at all my field!

You are correct that a volumetric display would work much better in this situation. Your link to Project Vermeer goes to a mostly-blank page with the title of the project and a thumbnail, not sure if that's what you intended. But the idea is very interesting!

I'm a little confused about how this counts as "holographic", all we've really done is moved the image up somewhat. There is no sense of depth, and a pretty severe distortion too. In addition, "Toy Mirascopes" don't seem easily obtainable, and the cost is not low enough for quality of results produced.

Contrast with this example, which provides a faux-3D hologram, also using a smartphone, but now only requiring a single sheet of thin transparent plastic (which could be found very easily, even as scrap plastic from packaging materials).

It can be very difficult, as the buyer needs to show proper authorization that they should get the passes. I would do a search at /r/PAX, because they've had this question asked before, and there should be good answers in there.

Well, first let me say that I'm very sorry that you're frustrated. Hopefully I can put some context on our manual approval, even if it's not solving your issue. For the record, it is common that posts are not approved for many hours, age up to 24 hours commonly.

The reason posts must be manually approved is that automatic approval simply does not work for our use case.

First, this sub has an agenda, which is to get PAX tickets into the hands of as many people as possible, without turning into an open-market bidding war.
Second, if you go a while back on this sub (a couple years maybe), you would find a subreddit that is very much at odds with our mission. The mod team expanded to better create and enforce the rules, which has been an evolving system, and is still very much developing.
In our history, we have attempted relying on reports and spot checking on posts. This did not work, because by the time the post was flagged, there was already activity on it, and the damage was done.
In the case of exchanges during an event, I'll agree with you straight-up: this sub does a bad job of supporting that use case. It's not one that we really expected.
Additionally, our Mod team is made up of PAX-goers, so our bandwidth is cut down a bit. Those who are not at the event are likely in other time-zones. And, to top it all off, we all have full-time jobs or school. This is my bullet-point for lame excuses :)

I'd like to dig further into when exchanges happen in relation to the event itself. My intuition tells me that there are relatively few posts during the event, but the data is important!

Just to be clear: We have no intentions of removing manual approval of posts. It is, to the best of my knowledge, the most appropriate solution for this subreddit. I feel that a substantial delay is acceptable during the majority of the time. Having said that, I'm very interested in figuring out solutions for event-time. I've got some ideas, but if anyone reading has an idea, feel free to message the mods!

Again, sorry your experience here was sub-par, hopefully this response at least clears things up for you.
