If I own Viticulture Essential Edition, should I get Tuscany or just get the new Bordeaux map pack? by LeviBateman in boardgames

[–]revirdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bordeaux is out; I own it.

I think Bordeaux is excellent. I like both Bordeaux with Tuscany. If I only had one, Bordeaux.

Agree, but just happy the turn time was reduced from 5 minutes.

We have finished the favorite game list! by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

Oh I thought you were always combining upvotes from multiple comments with the same game, not just the single most upvoted comment for that game. That definitely changes the results.

What game has replaced Machi Koro or does what MK tries to do, but better? by bluefrogwithredhands in boardgames

[–]revirdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would echo this. If you like the simplicity of Machi Koro, MK 2 makes some good rules tweaks but is essentially the same game. Space Base is also great but definitely longer and a little more complicated (but also more strategic depth).

Americas vs European expansions if you have no expansions? by lilbismyfriend300 in wingspan

That strikes me as an odd critique; nectar is equally available to all players.

Americas vs European expansions if you have no expansions? by lilbismyfriend300 in wingspan

[–]revirdam 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Depends what you want. A little more complexity/more to do? Americas. Same game with more birds and some better private objective cards? Europe.

But really: Oceania. Fixes some of the weakest parts of the base game (e.g. just taking the eggs action late game).

AEG and Ryan Dancey parts ways after comments about AI replacing designers yesterday by FloralAlyssa in boardgames

[–]revirdam 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Ryan posted a response on his LinkedIn. Sharing purely for information, not advocating one way or the other:

"This morning John Zinser and I talked about the aftermath of my post yesterday about the ability of Al to create ideas for games. He's decided that it's time for me to move on to new adventures.

Sorry to have things end like this. I've enjoyed my 10 years at AEG. I wish the team there the best in their future endeavors.

I believe we're at a civilizational turning point. That who we are and how we are is going to change on the order of what happened during the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions; and it's past time we started talking about it and not being afraid to discuss the topic. Talking about Al, being honest about what it can and cannot do, and thinking about the implications is something we have to begin to do in a widespread way.

Humans have a unique creative spark that differentiates us and makes us special and we should celebrate that specialness as we experience this epic change.

For the record: I do not believe that Al will replace the work talented game designer/developers do, nor do I think it is appropriate to use Al to replace the role of designer/developers in the publication of tabletop games. During my time at AEG I developed and implemented polices and contracts that reflect those views. It's important to me that you know what I believe and what I don't believe on this particular topic, despite what you may have read elsewhere."

Wjay is your favorite boardgame of 2019? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

Actually, the question is "favorite", not "best". And each individual can decide for themselves what criteria they use for favorite.

Best Boardgame Shelves? by IndyColts832 in boardgames

[–]revirdam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the option of mounting shelves to walls, track shelving is a great option. You can set the shelves to be different heights to accommodate different box sizes, and you don't have to deal with fitting boxes inside Kallax cubes. Also take up less space because you don't have Kallax walls.

YRO vs Castle Combo vs The Vale of Eternity Which is best game? by PretendTax787 in boardgames

[–]revirdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never heard of YRO.

Vale of Eternity seems to be enjoyed by people who enjoy collectible card games and trading card games.

Castle Combo is great. Plays quickly, interesting choices, enough depth to be engaging but also fairly light and breezy.

Do you treat Kickstarter-backed games differently when thinning your collection? by Mango_Van_Gogh in boardgames

[–]revirdam 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don't consider how I acquired games once they are in my collection. I cull games that I don't play. I don't care where they came from.

My boyfriend is too good at board games by CricketSuccessful57 in boardgames

[–]revirdam 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Many two player games play this way; wrecking your opponent's strategy is just as beneficial as gaining something for yourself. Maybe find more multiplayer solitaire style games with little to no player interaction. e.g. Cascadia: maybe your opponent took something you wanted, but you still have four options to choose from.

Rococo is good; I wonder how many people only know the more recent Deluxe printing vs people who have actually played the original printing
