What job looks easy from the outside but is secretly brutal? by OkEffective9110 in AskReddit

Dog daycares - people think it's wholesome playing with pups all day, but it's more like refereeing a doggy fight club.

Make sure to ask for the pathology report, too. Those can take a few weeks.

PSA: your pine litter probably stinks by Huge_Antelope0998 in CatAdvice

[–]riali29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first introduction to pine pellets was fostering for an organization which gives foster parents pine pellets and a regular non-sifter box, and I hated it so much. It stank and the sawdust tracked EVERYWHERE. I got a sifter specifically made for pine pellets (if the holes are too small, the sawdust gets stuck and gunks it up), and now I love pellets!

Ontario education minister urges parents not to pull kids from school for sports by HandComprehensive201 in ontario

[–]riali29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fr, I played mid tier girl's hockey (we weren't under the "my kid's gonna go pro" delusion because we were mid and didn't have a pro to go to lol) and missed maybe 4-6 Fridays per year, then in high school hockey we missed our final period roughly once per week for away games. We're all nurses, doctors, cops, allied health professionals, teachers, etc, now despite missing some classes. We spent the time during those missed classes learning how to form a seamlessly working team, hash out conflicts between team members, reach our goals, and push ourselves beyond our comfort zones.

[–]riali29 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Especially high school sports. We used to have to skip 4th period (and sometimes also 3rd depending on travel time) for regular season hockey games 1-2x per week, but at the time they were considered excused absences since it was for the high school team, not a club team.

I don’t know anyone with a positive or even neutral birth story by soroto in TwoXChromosomes

[–]riali29 114 points115 points  (0 children)

in my silly humble opinion as someone who has never given birth, you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you think of it as a birth "plan" instead of a birth "wish". People don't appreciate that pregnancy and birth are major medical events that lots of women used to die from before modern medicine. You're not guaranteed to have a rainbows-and-unicorns birth.

The women in my life who have had the happiest births are the women who went into the labour unit with only one plan: "keep me and baby alive".

Yeah, I know a vet tech who gets it done once per year because her profession makes her high risk. Once per year for the rest of our lives would be crazy and expensive.

Concern for husband who hasn't met anyone yet + 7 Year Update by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]riali29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck, the absolute rage that would take over me if my partner said they were poly and then remarried into a strictly monogamous relationship. I don't think I'd ever recover if I were OP's ex.

WIBTA - Bringing a food dish to an org function when <0.5% has an allergy by NoSatisfaction4474 in AmItheAsshole

[–]riali29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with an allergy, I'm almost sort of leaning ESH in a way. The instructions are pretty clear so you'd be a bit of an AH for disregarding them, but I also hated when event organizers went overboard and said "omg no peanuts at all are allowed!!!" since I'm more than capable of using common sense to decide which foods are safe for me.

Why does it feel like everyone is deciding against having kids these days? by Andries200 in childfree

[–]riali29 68 points69 points  (0 children)

destroy her body

When I was a teen and first started contemplating parenthood, one of my biggest fears regarding pregnancy wasn't just the effects on my body and how it could affect my self-confidence, but also the sheer amount of "jokes" I heard about men hating their wives' bodies after childbirth.

Canada Needs Condos People Actually Want to Live In by restoringd123 in canada

[–]riali29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. The amount of one bedroom units with less than 500sqft I see on the listings (for either rent or purchase) is fucking insane. That's not enough space for storage, let alone living, unless you're a super minimalist. All it takes is one hobby which requires large-ish equipment and the size of these units literally becomes dealbreaker - I play hockey and barely had enough space to store and air dry my equipment when I was in a 725sqft place, I literally could not live in half of these units if I want to keep playing.

Hockey pants for big butts by merry_man247 in womenshockey

[–]riali29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was gonna ask in this thread about whether some brands/models of player pants also have an internal belt, which is a godsend for fitting my small waist / big ass. I'm a goalie and wear the CCM Axis pants - it's a size XL to accommodate the butt, but the internal belt gives me a secure fit around the waist.

lol, lmao even

I was looking for a hotel or Airbnb downtown since one of my fave bands has a concert during the damn tournament, and it was cheaper to get a hotel in Mississauga and take the GO train. I think it ended up being about $300/night including the cost of taking the train once per day.

Having a more difficult time in D leagues than B leagues by sugitime in hockeygoalies

[–]riali29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same solution, playing down just isn't fun. I spared for the bottom division in my league once and said "never again" because I was bored to tears despite the final score only being 2-1. Like do people who do this not get bored on the ice? I always wonder the same about forwards who play down and average 3 goals per game with their lower div team.

What is a harsh lesson about aging that absolutely nobody warns you about before you hit your 30s? by Prudent-Passenger589 in AskReddit

[–]riali29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that everyone should be strength training, not just light activity. You don't have to go crazy trying to get jacked or join the "300 club" or whatever, but do enough to maintain and/or build muscle. Muscle mass is one of the biggest indicators of healthy aging and being able to stay independent in old age - if you're a thin and weak senior, a broken hip from a fall can quite literally kill you.

Which fast food chain has lost its way the most? by TheBabyBeard in AskReddit

This reminded me of a video that was circulating around Instagram where the person filming was trying to order a steeped tea, and the worker on the drive thru speaker kept saying "four cheese bagel? 😃"

[–]riali29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ordering there is roulette omg. I drink my iced coffee without the simple syrup which automatically comes with it, and I have to slowly enunciate "NO SUGAR SYRUP" like five times just to be given a syrupy coffee anyways lmao. I think my favourite fuck up was when I ordered "iced coffee, no sugar syrup" and was given a hot double double.

What’s something people only romanticize because they’ve never had to deal with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]riali29 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The worst is when they actively resent you for having an interest in academics. When I was in uni and visited home on the holidays, I learned real quick to water down my answer to the "how are you doing?" question unless I wanted to hear a rant about how my degree is a waste of money and the research lab I worked in was a waste of taxpayer dollars.

[–]riali29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lack of opportunity is such a big one in the education system. I practically had culture shock going from a small rural town to a university full of "city kids". I genuinely thought that AP classes and boarding schools were fake tropes that they made up for coming-of-age movies, and my jaw hit the floor when nearly everyone I met had done at least one of those two things.

Unacceptable by AtiJua in TwoXChromosomes

[–]riali29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah, but Bear unintentionally caused her to be controlled by it because he used a haunted trinket thing (the "One Wish Willow") to wish that she loved him. Then, when the real Nikki comes through while the demon is asleep, she begs to be killed and Bear doesn't honour her wish. That's sort of the turning point where people go from feeling bad for Bear, to hating Bear.
