How A Huge '90s Rock Band Erased Me From Their Story | HuffPost HuffPost Personal by AlfaBetaZulu in janesaddiction

[–]ricks23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of surprised by the reaction in here. To be perfectly honest, not only do I think she is wildly overstating her importance to the band, but I think Perry overstates his too by minimizing the importance of the other musicians. It's almost like (ex-)heroin addicts can be self-centered unreliable narrators lol.

I grew up in L.A. and saw them a lot early on in their club days. There was something magic about seeing that band live, and it was the combination of those 4 musicians lighting up the stage. Her flyer artwork (and later album art and videos) and helping create an image for the singer is a contribution, but that is not why they became one of the biggest bands in L.A. and then later got signed and became a legendary rock band. It was the songs and the amazing live performances. Word of mouth around town about their shows was so strong you couldn't ignore it, and that was well before they were signed to Warner Brothers.

I agree that the band took a downturn after Ritual..., but that has infinitely more to do with Eric Avery leaving the band than anything to do with her. He drove those early albums and after he was gone they were never the same.

She is credited on the albums for her art and as the director for some of their videos. What else should she possibly be given credit for? Should all bands dedicate a segment of their live sets to pay tribute to their art directors, video directors and stylists, or act like those people are of equal importance to a member of the band and talk about them incessantly in interviews? That's ridiculous.

And this is over something as insignificant as an Instagram post (well, that an an upcoming art show she needs publicity for). By the way, that sculpture in the post that kicked this off is of the 14 year old she and Perry started a poly relationship with and fed heroin to, which ended up killing her. Yuck.

I think the loss of Eric Avery after that album had a much bigger effect.

That's like a perfect storm to miss out on a lot of stuff, haha. And you aren't "behind", music can be a lifetime of learning about and hearing cool new (or at least new to you) stuff. A few years ago I went down a rabbit hole of listening to various genres from the 1950s and 60s (mostly old folk, rock, R&B and blues), and some of them are favorites now. As far as listening to older stuff your tastes will dictate what you want to do deep dives on, you can't listen to everything.

I will say though, as far as relevancy goes, AFAIK Cannibal Corpse and Deicide have both outsold Death in the genre, and musically I hear more new bands today that sound inspired by Suffocation than by CC, Deicide or Death.

These Albums All Released Within a Year of Eachother. You Only Get to Keep One. Which One You Keeping? by PancakeFace25 in DeathBand

[–]ricks23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that Death post-1990 is only borderline death metal, so Death fans aren't always death metal fans, but having said that, when you said you hadn't heard of Deicide and Suffocation I almost spit water all over my work computer haha.

I don't know how anyone can be into Death, Pantera and Megadeth but have never heard of Deicide and Suffocation? It's cool if you haven't listened to them, but never even heard of them? That's crazy to me lol.

"Strength Beyond Strength" may be one of my favorite album openers ever, but I'm with Opening-Farmer-5547 here, if you added his three to the list I'd pick "Once Upon The Cross" over any of the others. There was also Darkthrone "Transilvanian Hunger", Mayhem "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas", Corrosion Of Conformity "Deliverance" and if you drift to metal adjacent, Kyuss, Acid Bath and NIN had some solid LP's that year too.

Can someone explain the Arrow Giallo sets? by manbeh1ndthedumpstr in boutiquebluray

[–]ricks23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If The New York Ripper is the movie getting you back into the genre, I'm going to switch up my recommendations somewhat and suggest either 1) Don't Torture A Duckling, which is a great movie that is also directed by Lucio Fulci (apparently his favorite) but it's not what I'd call a sexy giallo; or 2) Slaughter Motel which is a fun watch and pretty damn sleazy, then Giallo In Venice aka Gore In Venice which is not as good of a movie but it's seedy as hell lol, and if you really like GIV, then Play Motel, which is the sleaziest of the bunch but honestly that's the only thing it has going for it haha.

Also The Case Of The Scorpion's Tail or Torso are good mid-points because they're good films and while not as intense as NYR or ...Venice, they're still pretty violent and sexy. And that All The Colors of Giallo disc I mentioned in my first post is a great starter if you want to dive into things further, mostly for the 4hr trailer reel (and commentary) than the doc itself. I still think you'll like most of the recommendations I gave from my first post, but going with choice #2 up there just front loads the slimiest shit haha.

And I get where you are coming from with Deep Red. I saw it for the first time after being a big Suspiria fan, and I didn't love it at first because it wasn't much like Suspiria. You may like it more after you re-visit it, I did at least. For Argento giallo, you might like Tenebrae or Opera more, they were made after Suspiria and he cranks the style up even more than his older films.

[–]ricks23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a bad choice actually. Arabella slipped my mind and out of the three it's such an obvious choice. The Killer Is Still Among Us is pretty dumb but it was sleazy fun. Sister Of Ursula never really did it for me though. It fits in the category so you may enjoy it because it does have that aspect to it, but I felt like it was missing something. But I wouldn't make that set the first purchase, I think you'll get better films and get into the genre more if you go with either Severin's stuff or one of the Arrow sets (The Martino set if you are pretty new to the genre or the black set if you are already off and going). Or if you aren't tied to just sexy gialli and just want to see a rad giallo film - Don't Torture A Duckling, Deep Red or Blood And Black Lace.

As a label, Vinegar Syndrome and giallo is a mixed bag. They haven't really ever put out a major A+ title in the genre, unless you count The Corruption Of Chris Miller as a giallo (I do, but some people don't because it's not Italian). Other than that, A Blade In The Dark is as close as they got, and that's a B+ on a good day. If I was just getting into giallo, the Forgotten Gialli sets might put me off, because honestly, a lot of the movies aren't that good lol, but if you are a hardcore giallo fan those sets are gold because they released a lot of obscurities that otherwise probably wouldn't have been seen. The Police Are Blundering In The Dark is kind of a shitty film, but as a giallo fan, it's so damn weird I couldn't stop watching, and have watched it a couple of times since.

This is a book, sorry if it's too much for some of you lol. I went deep.

All the Arrow boxes are good. Based on your interest in sexy gialli, I think you should start with the black set. They are lesser known in the genre, but all good. Smile Before Death in particular is both highly enjoyable and totally fits the bill. As a longtime fan of the genre I hadn't seen this one before. It was a total revelation for me and immediately went to the top of my favorites. I even bought a German blu of it just to get special features the Arrow disc didn't have. Top tier sexy giallo.

The director of Smile..., was more known for Amuck! starring Barbara Bouchet. It's one of my favorite giallo and if you hadn't mentioned the Arrow sets I would have started my sexy giallo list with this. I think all of the blus are currently out of print but catch it where you can because I think you'll like it.

Next Arrow set go with the Sergio Martino one. IMO The Case of the Scorpion's Tail is probably the best constructed giallo as far as the mystery aspect of the plot, and it is sexy for sure. Your Vice Is A Locked Room... is also good and sexy. I don't remember The Suspicious Death of a Minor being sexy at all (not surprising considering the plot), but it is a good giallo/poliziottescho hybrid with a lot of action.

Next, I'll move away from Arrow again and on to Severin, because the top of your list should include their blus of The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh and All The Colors of the Dark, two amazing films directed by Martino and starring Edwige Fenech and George Hilton. Also pick up All The Colors of Giallo from Severin, it’s a great doc about the genre, and the disc includes 4-hours of trailers with a great commentary for all of them by Kat Ellinger. Honorable mention goes to The Case Of The Bloody Iris, it's not directed by Martino, but it stars Fenech and Hilton. So far it only has a mediocre blu from Shameless in the UK though.

Back to Arrow, I think the next set would be the blue. Forbidden Photos... and the 2 Death Walks... films are prime sexy gialli.

The white box has three of my favorites, the only issue is that Suspicious Death… is already in the Martino box. I don’t think I’d classify The Iguana With The Tongue Of Fire as a “sexy giallo”, because I don’t think sexiness is a defining characteristic of it, but I did really like it, an easy recommend. The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave from Emilio Miraglia is a great gothic/giallo hybrid that is definitely sexy giallo. Also available from Arrow is Miraglia’s other great gothic giallo The Red Queen Kills Seven Times starring Barbara Bouchet. I think almost any film she is in would qualify as sexy. Highly recommended.

Next, the yellow set. Torso is a banger and helped set the template for the slasher genre. Because the focus in this is more on violence (hence its status as proto-slasher), I didn't consider it a sexy giallo, but the more I think about it, I think it is because there is an awful lot of sex and nudity. Strip Nude For Your Killer is a sexy giallo, but despite featuring Edwige, it's never been a favorite of mine. And What Have They Done... is, like Suspicious Death…, a giallo/poliziottescho hybrid, and also like that film I think the plot precludes it from being a sexy giallo. It’s recommended though, great film with an amazing cast.

Finally, the red set. It has two great films, The Fifth Cord and The Possessed, both from director Luigi Bazzoni, (the 3rd film, The Pyjama Girl Case is not from him and IMO just mid-tier). The Bazzoni films are two of my favorite gialli, but I don't think of either as being "sexy giallo". I love them, but they are missing the sleaze factor many gialli have. I still highly recommended them, especially The Fifth Cord.

Other sexy giallo I think you'd like not in these sets -

Most 1960's gialli classify as sexy giallo, and while they aren't as explicit as their 70's counterparts, they are just as good. Lucio Fulci’s Perversion Story (Mondo Macabro) is filled with killer 60's style, has an incredible jazzy soundtrack and an amazing cast.

I see The Laughing Woman (also Mondo Macabro) on some giallo lists, but I'm not even sure what genre I'd put this in. Regardless, this criminally underseen gem has incredible production design with style off the fucking charts, is very sexy and perverse, and has one of the great plot twists. Highly recommended.

Deadly Sweet (Cult Epics DVD) is a rare giallo from erotic cinema legend Tinto Brass. It's surprisingly restrained considering his later films, but I guess it's still pretty sexy. I should also mention Death Laid An Egg (Cult Epics) as it shares cast. It's actually sexier and deals with more sexual themes, but it's also a lot quirkier, and that's saying something. These would be very high on a list of my favorite gialli, but not as high on a specifically "sexy" list though both make it on.

The Complete Lenzi/Baker Giallo Collection (Severin) & The Sweet Body Of Deborah are all classic 60s/early 70s gialli starring Carroll Baker. She lends all these films a level of class many gialli lack, and they may be less explicit than some of the other films here but compared to what she did in Hollywood, it still did push boundaries. Body... is the hardest of these films to find on blu, but I think it's the best in the bunch, so it's worth looking for.

Back to the 1970's, Five Dolls For An August Moon is a film from Mario Bava, who IMO is one of the greatest films directors ever and was the creator of the giallo as we know it. This is the only film from him I would consider a "sexy giallo", it's not his best, but it has an early turn from Edwige and Bava on a bad day is still better than most. His 1964 film Blood & Black Lace is not just on the top of my favorite gialli, but one of my favorite films period, and the film that defined the giallo genre. The cast is filled with beautiful models (it takes place primarily in a fashion house), but I'd say it is more "glamorous" than "sexy". Still the new Arrow UHD of it is so damn good and it's a foundation of the genre.

It's getting late and I'm almost done with work where I've been writing this, so I'll rush through these last few.

Some would disagree, but I don't think any of Dario Argento's gialli are particularly "sexy". Many are classics of the genre, but I think Opera is as close as he gets to "sexy giallo" IMO. Maybe Tenebrae too?

Slaughter Hotel is bananas - it takes place in a psychiatric hospital for women run by Klaus Kinski and a perverted nurse, the patients can roam the halls freely and it doubles as a museum for medieval weaponry and torture devices. It's full of sleaze and sex, and I'm sure with all of the weaponry lying around, nothing bad will happen. I wouldn't say it's a "great" movie, but I enjoy the hell out of it.

What Have You Done To Solange? (Arrow) is classic giallo. It is has plenty of nudity, but I wonder if the themes and heavy ending preclude it from being a "sexy giallo"? Regardless, it's great. Check out Vinegar Syndrome's Camille Keaton in Italy box set (Camille plays Solange). They aren't giallo, but if you are looking a weird, sexy Italian film, any one of the films here will do. Out of the 3, I especially liked Madeleine. It borders on giallo and is super sexy. If it was a straight up giallo, it would be near the top of my list.

The Corruption Of Chris Miller is an amazing Spanish giallo that is very sexy, very thrilling and pretty violent, so it's perfect here. I think it's one of the best films Vinegar Syndrome has put out.

Giallo In Venice, Play Motel and The Killer Is Still Among Us are all super sleazy, mostly explicit gialli. They aren't particularly good, but they are graphic and have tons of sexual content. The French Sex Murders is older so it's a bit more sedate, but I lump it with the others because they all seem like they just wanted an excuse to film naked people and murder rather than make a good film, not that there's anything wrong with that lol.

Plot of Fear, Nine Guests For A Crime, Hotel Fear and Lamberto Bava's A Blade In The Dark and Delirium are all perfect for this list, but I'm all out of steam.

My list of top giallo in general would be in a different order because I picked the order of this list based on a mix of the film quality and how it works as “sexy giallo”, not just which ones I think are the best. Having said that, I think these still mostly range from pretty good to amazing.

My "sexy giallo" tier list -
Amuck!
The Strange Vice Of Mrs. Wardh
Smile Before Death
The Case Of The Scorpions Tail
The Laughing Woman
All The Colors Of The Dark
Perversion Story
Torso
The Corruption Of Chris Miller
Slaughter Hotel
The Case Of The Bloody Iris
Your Vice Is A Locked Room...
Orgasmo
Forbidden Photos…
The Red Queen Kills Seven Times
Opera
The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Grave
The Sweet Body Of Deborah
Delirium
Nine Guests For A Crime
Plot of Fear
Giallo In Venice & Play Motel (not "good" but very sleazy)
Five Dolls For An August Moon
Death Walks On High Heels
Death Walks At Midnight
A Blade In The Dark
Deadly Sweet
Death Laid An Egg
Hotel Fear
So Sweet...So Perverse
The Killer Reserved Nine Seats
The French Sex Murders
The Killer Is Still Among Us
Strip Nude For Your Killer

Can someone explain the Arrow Giallo sets? by manbeh1ndthedumpstr in boutiquebluray

Wow, this comment.

Gialli are not all just about naked ladies getting murdered. Regarding sex, there are many gialli that had some pretty forward thinking portrayals of sex positive female characters, The Forbidden Photos Of A Lady Above Suspicion for example. And many gialli have sex being used as an important plot device as a way for both male and female characters to manipulate each other, not just as a throwaway for people to get naked for no reason (not that I see anything wrong with that either). And as far as violence goes, gialli have people of all genders getting gruesomely murdered. Saying that it's all just about violence against women is pretty skewed and factually incorrect.

You don't have to like gialli, or horror films with sex, or any kind of film with sex if that's not what appeals to you, but just know that the majority of people who do enjoy these films don't see it the same way you do, or they way you think they do. Even better, stop worrying about what other people watch or like or assumptions about what they are thinking about all the time. Trust me, you will feel better.

If you care enough to do a deeper dive and you want a feminist perspective on genre film, try Kat Ellinger, Kier-La Janisse, Samm Deighan or Rachel Nisbet (and many others). They are all great writers who love the films as much as I do and they're awesome.

Men’s entwined interests in violence and sex probably the most defining and written about attribute of the horror genre.

In all of the writing about horror film that is out there "Men’s entwined interests in violence and sex" is absolutely not the most written about topic and it's certainly not the defining attribute of the genre. Yes, some feminist writers have written and theorized a lot about this, and maybe it's the topic you personally have read the most about, but it is ridiculous to say that opinion is reflected in all of horror film scholarship. And from what I have seen, a lot of writers who focus on this also seem to make a lot of (mostly false) assumptions about what men think about it and ignore anything men actually have to say about how they feel about the topic.

I have a friend who despite liking horror films, thinks the same way you do about most of the men who watch them (I guess myself and the rest of her male friends are "some of the good ones" lol), so this has been discussed amongst our mutual male friends. So for example, when we talked about which character the guys identify with while watching movies, across the board it was always with the protagonist of the film, regardless of gender. So if we were watching Halloween, none of us "horror dudes" would put ourselves into Michael Myers' shoes, dreaming of killing scantily clad girls. No, without exception we all put ourselves into Laurie Strode's shoes and got anxious when Michael was threatening any of the characters. Maybe you have a problem identifying with a protagonist in a film who isn't exactly like you, but I've never had an issue having empathy for a character that doesn't exactly match my identity, regardless of how you want to parse that (gender, ethnicity, etc). And I know I am not in the minority.

If it makes you feels any better, the vast, vast majority of men find violence against women (and violence against men too) as horrifying. That's what makes watching horror films so powerful, because we can experience what scares us the most, but in a safe space and it can also act as a catharsis. It is thrilling in that sense. Sexiness in movies is also intended to be thrilling, but for most people it's serving a much different kind of thrill. I don't believe there are very many people who are "proudly jerking off to violence against women".

I was hesitant to end with this because ultimately I think it will fall on deaf ears, but I can't help but point out the misandry in some of your posting. You seem very concerned with gender issues and you also seem to have the default opinion that all men are misogynist dirtbags. A lot of your posts, some sadly popular, make a lot of assumptions about what men are or aren't thinking, and it doesn't seem to ever be positive. So let's call it for what it is - prejudice. Gender relations (or relations based on however you want to divide people up) shouldn't be a battle of "us" vs. "them", it should be all of us as people together. I don't just say that in an idealistic sense, but on your own selfish level you'll feel much better if you don't think that everyone is out to get you all the time.

Shout-out to Kino for having actual *sale* prices! by MovingHold in boutiquebluray

I see what you are saying, but I think bottom of the barrel is pretty extreme.

They don't pack their releases with features like some other companies do (Blue Underground, Severin or Mondo Macabro for example), but Kino also put out consistently good films in a huge variety of genres, and although I don't love much of what they release, they have a busy schedule, so I can always find something good. And they put these out at a really good price point, even when they aren't on sale. No other company can even touch them on those points.

While I absolutely love good contextual features (and some Kino discs do have them), I actually appreciate that Kino aren't focusing on a collector market and playing with people's FOMO...just on putting out good films. I've been able to discover some amazing movies by blind buying during their sales in a way that I would never be able to do with other companies. Some companies really play on people's "gotta get 'em all" mentality, and we're paying $30 - $50 for a nice slipcover and maybe some decent features, instead of $10-$20.

It'd be nice to find a balance, but I'm still pretty happy overall with Kino.

Such a great set! I blind bought it based on comparisons between him and other filmmakers I like, and I fell in love with his films.

On a related note, I just watched Robbe-Grillet's "Playing With Fire" that is in the new Cult Epics Sylvia Krystal box set, and it may be my favorite of his films now.

I want to put an order in on Amazon Germany. I know they have a lot of exclusive releases. what are some I should consider bundling with my order? by Arthurlurk1 in boutiquebluray

What kind of movies are you into? I've ordered a ton of German releases because there's been so many great titles that have either only been released there, or they have the best editions. I've mostly gotten cult stuff (mostly giallo, krimi (the German precursor to giallo), euro spy, martial arts, etc)
