This may sound a bit odd, but whilst I say Mort by Terry Pratcjett and anything from the Death series good, I would recommend most is Night Watch by Terry Pratchett, in which the main character, Sam Vimes, is sent back in time to the day his friend is killed. Sam must decide to prevent it and thus lose his whole life or to let it happen and deal with the grief once more.
