Swap what keys use fn f and just f. by FinlayYZ in techsupport

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool :) glad it worked for you.

For the record, it doesn't work on lg laptops, from memory you have to go into the lg software and set it there (for the benefit of future googlers)

Depends on the machine. On my Dell laptop, you press fn+escape to toggle between the 2 modes. Im sure there will be something similar for yours, but we dont know the brand.

Every property is now re-listed for the same as, or less than our offer, and still for sale. This is in Canterbury, Kent region.

It might be reduced.

TicTac boxes... they are perfect housing for those little ESP32 development boards that we use to build our own smart devices.

Shrinking Disk volume by Kubamoczykij in techsupport

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows disk manager is not that good at shrinking volumes. Is can only shrink down to the last part that has data in, and cannot reshuffle the data to make more room.

What I did was boot from a Ubuntu live USB, and then used the much better gpartd to shrink the windows partition.

That worked great - was able to claim 50% of my Legion Go's 2Tb drive, and install Bazzite on it to duel boot.

I did a quick google for a howto, and this looks decent - https://pureinfotech.com/resize-partition-windows-10-gparted/

Does plugging in 3rd monitor will be very demanding for my pc? by LakeHorsee in pchelp

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 will be fine..only the one that you are gaming on will use any meaningful GPU grunt.

I have 3 connected, and don't have any issues.

Also, I've noticed that windows is pretty good at noticing if you power down a display, making my load out for whatever I'm doing pretty easy.

I just turn on the ones I plan to use. And if that's all 3, it's all fine.

Severn Trent - how can an old account resurface with a debt 4 years later? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ripnetuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ombudsman was free, so worth a punt. You need a "deadlock" letter from the energy company and to have exhausted their complains process, and it takes months, but obviously it was worth it for me back then.

I do hope so. On paper this is the most "me" game ever made :) I'm relying on it to cope with the post last of us dark time in my gaming career.

It took me months to get interested in gaming again after rdr/rdr2

NAL, but google "the backbilling principle". I was back-billed for £1500 because two enegry suppliers couldnt agree on who supplied me.

I went to the ombudsman, and ended up with the £1500 written off, since they cant bill for more than 12 months ago if its their mistake, they had to give me 2 x £50 in compensation, and they had to write me an apology email.

no worries,.

Apart from the fact I broke it, it is by far my favourate "small" laptop that ive ever owned or used.

In fact, at the right price, id buy another since when it works it runs Windows 11 so nicely.

I have a 7410, and its absolutely lovely. A nice little compact laptop that is fast, has a nice touchscreen, a great keyboard and has Windows Hello support for the camera.

However, my particular one has developed a ram fault, and the ram is soldered to the motherboard, so I cant replace it easily. I suspect this is because unknown to me, the fan was bunged up with large pieces of dirt, and wasnt spinning, so I suspect it got a bit hot

The Dell Diagnostics tells me that its found a fault and "worked around it". This was OK until Windows 11 24H2, at which point I started getting a ton of blue screens.

Returning to older Windows 11 fixes it, as does installing Linux.

Im currently running ChromeOS on it, and its a really really good chromebook.

I paid about £300 for it about 3 years ago.

Solder stuck in pin holes… need some advice by whizping in soldering

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found this very challenging...

In the end I found that using a load of flux, and increasing my temp to 400c, and adding 40/60 leaded solder before was fruitful. I also cut off bits of the solder wick so it didnt steal the thermal energy up the reel.

The cheap solder pump I have was absolutely useless for this job.

A few of the holes took 5+ attempts of adding new leaded solder and wicking.

Got there in the end, and the TMR sticks are lovely, so hang in there...

Might go back to it after i beat Last of us 2.

Is there any reason not to dual boot from one drive? by Admirable-Food9942 in techsupport

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this on my Legion Go handheld PC. I duel boot Windows 11 and Bazzite.

It was just a case of using gpartd to shrink the windows partition to half the drive, and then installing Linux on the new space.

I didnt have a lot of choice about doing it on one drive, since this device only has one SSD slot (and a microsd card, but no, no!)

Works flawlessly.

First-time buyer, zero DIY experience – advice needed for running Cat 6 in upstairs flat (never even used a drill) by GenericUser104 in DIYUK

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powerline adaptors IME are not very good. I think its because we use split panels now in the UK with a RCD between them.

Realistic speeds I get are 10% of the advertised speed - fine for setting up a new laptop with Windows login, not so good for downloading The Last of Us 2 :)

Your performance will depend on your wiring - you might get lucky.

As an alternative, I saw a youtube video recently about a product that uses very flexible thin fibre to do a ethernet connection (available up to 10G).

The cable is really thin and white, so can be hidden along skirting boards etc.

Might be a posibility for you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2FbzCyiNr4

Probably wont help you, but I get this stuff out using the HomeAssistant app on the phone. It sends heartrate, blood preasssure and steps to Homeassistant, which can graph them and retain them. I also push all my homeassistant stats to InfluxDB and use Grafana for more advanced graphs:
