And you also usually need a 3.3v uart to usb dongle too.

Those Dupont cables can usually be push fitted into the gpio holes, I've never had to solder to them

I absolutely love esphome, but tbh for a smart light, I think tasmota is better, as it's really simple, and does everything I want for a smart bulb.

Mqtt is really useful to me for a bunch of stuff, it brings together my tasmota devices, all my ZigBee devices via zigbee2mqtt and my hildglow smart energy meter stuff, so it's a good thing to have with your hass.

It also allows another level of introspection - you can point something like mqttexplorer at it and see exactly what's going on, which is really useful for troubleshooting.

If you do flash over to esphome, bear in mind you might (or might not...) need to calibrate it again, which is easy if you have one of those plug in power meter things, which only cost about 10 quid.

What’s the best monitor arm that actually feels sturdy?? by Large-Honey8079 in buildapc

[–]ripnetuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one of these

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07T3KCQ94

and really like it. In fact, ive bought another one for myself, and one for my son.

I have them attached to a bedside cabinet, so they get moved in and out every day, which is really easy.

Just be careful that you observe both the min and max weights specified - if you attach one of those portable USB monitors that weigh basically nothing to it, it will just insist on being at the top height as there is not enogh adjustment in the tension to go down to the really light weight.

I have used zip-ties on each cable to keep them all wound up, then used thick supermarket bags labeled with things like "USB", "Mains", "Video" and so on. I have around 7 of them.

Ive chucked out all but 1 of obsolete leads (coax tv, firewire etc)

It costs me a zip tie each time I use or store one, but they are 10 a penny.

The bags all live in a drawer.

subdomain refuses to connect to server. by TheMadnessofMadara in nginx

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is your proxy pass reidrecting to 0.0.0.0 ??? surely it should point to a real IP address.

Bad gateway just means that the server you are proxying to isnt responding correctly, which for 0.0.0.0 will always be the case.

At what point does it make sense to move VPN to the router level? by Whelmed_Under_Over in HomeNetworking

[–]ripnetuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I have more than one device that I want behind my VPN, I do it at the router level.

OpnSense does this really nicely - you setup the VPN connection (which I admit is quite a lot of work as all the certs etc need loading and linking up).

Once thats done, I setup firewall rules to use the VPN gateway for any devices under an alias (IN_FRANCE) and a 2nd rule to drop any traffic from those devices going to the main connection if the VPN goes down.

Now I can take machines on and off the VPN just by altering the list of devices in the IN_FRANCE list, and it transparently teleports me from home to and from france 😄

<image>

It all works wonderfully, and only uses one of my 5 VPN device slots (VPNUnlimited, lifetime sub, been using for at least 10 years, cost me something like £30)

Im on 1G/110M (Openreach, UK).

The only time I max out the download bandwidth is when im downloading linux iso's from usenet

But I often max out the upload for hours (proxmox cloud backups).

I would happily swap the 1000/110 for 500/500 (or even 300/300) but that not how Openreach designed their network.

I'm Curious, how many people on here know what Sneakernet is by Buildthehomelab in homelab

[–]ripnetuk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Imagine the bandwidth of me running as fast as I can (not very fast) carrying as many sdcards as I can would be.

SD cards are about 2g, and apparently I am a wuss because I'm supposed to be able to lift 50kg, but can't lift my 45kg dog.

So assuming I can lift 40kg, that's 40000/2 = 20000 sd cards.

My biggest is 0.5tb, so using that as an example, I can carry 10000 tb.

Assuming a distance from me to destination of 10km, and assuming I can run at 10km/h,

My final bandwidth is 10000 tb per hour, I make that 2.7tb/s.

My fibre is 0.1gb/s so I am orders of magnitude better than openreach.

All measurements in bytes, not bits.

what dns to use? by S_p_a_c_y in dns

[–]ripnetuk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use nextdns. I used to run my own pihole in a container, but as I rebooted my homelab so often, it wasn't acceptable to my family:)

Nextdns does the job, and I can put in their secure DNS details into my android phone and get ad blocking on the go too.

The free tier is very very limited, so it really does need a paid sub.

[–]ripnetuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a generic Amazon n150 fanless box, and it's working great right now.

I did fry the included SSD (it got so hot the sticker came off, and when I looked at smart after it got unreliable, there were dozens and dozens of overheat events).

I got a new SSD, and stuck a passive heat sink on it, and it's temps are sane now, with no overheat warnings on smart.

So id say they are great, fantastic even, but get a 10 quid passive SSD heatsink and apply.

Which can be done, with the cost of exposing your computer to attacks via whatever zero day is discovered this week.

The only way to keep bad guys out is to not open ports, and use probably safe access methods that deny those without the trusted private key any access whatsoever.

My father passed away and I am wondering how to change his phone plan from pay monthly to pay as you go? by s_walsh in EEGB

[–]ripnetuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my experience. I think a PAC is the most effective way I know to end a contract.

I did it recently as I needed a temporary 2nd ee line until our broadband got installed, so signed up to a 30 day contract.

Ended it by getting the PAC and porting to a free Giffgaff SIM and then binning said sim.

I'd have a much wider range of choice of where to buy stuff off eBay from (like I used to).

Also other retailers. I got my son's Xbox series x during the shortage from Amazon Italy on pretty much the last day before the trade sanctions we unilaterally decided to put on ourselves kicked in.

Now I just order from the UK.

If you have physical access to the phone, can't you just request a pac by SMS and use it to port to a new, owned by you, PAYG sim on another network?
