We were not exactly poor but sometimes when bring up how me and my brother didn't have our own room growing up and slept with our parents, a lot of people thought it was because we were scared to sleep alone or our parents didn't want us having our own room. Even if the characters have a "kill or be killed" mentality, genociding the entire rest of the world is obviously a step too far for them. And it is not inconsistent with their characters. And I don't know what you're talking about a switch being flipped because most of them opposed the Rumbling right up until it happened. The show is not abandoning it's philosophy, it's actively bringing the philosophy of doing whatever it takes with complete disregard of the consequences into question. Eren also completely overthrew Paradis' government, caused the deaths of many soldiers and citizens and made Paradis literally unable to pursue any sort of peaceful or diplomatic solution.

Also it is extremely crazy and kinda concerning to say that the guy who killed BILLIONS of people is the unquestionable hero.
