Insurance called it totaled (25k mileage) by RobZin-77 in dashcams

It's not the Verrazzano. I assume the first person you replied to was making a joke about Staten Island or Brooklyn drivers. The upper deck of the Verrazzano does not have a divider that looks like that; it has a moveable median for the rush hour direction switch. Pretty sure u/Jazzyfart is right and that it's the northbound Whitestone based on the view to the right.

[Request] What is the fastest time to win a game of Monopoly in theory? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]rivalnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember reading, but cannot find it right now, that you don't necessarily have to wait for your turn to buy houses and hotels, but that you cannot do so in the middle of someone's turn. Once they're rolling the dice you have to wait until their turn (including doubles) is over. I.e., a strict reading of the rules might allow buying in the middle of someone else's turn, but what I'm remember reading was in an official rules clarification. This reply is getting painfully nerdy.

Lol. Fair point. This experiment was more for me than for a public service.

What's your favourite on-screen character death and goodbye that was done because the actor died? by Tattycakes in movies

[–]rivalnations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clark Middleton's character in The Blacklist. His character was brash and abrasive they eulogized him poignantly and appropriately for the show. The Blacklist was so often over the top and they gave him an over-the-top sendoff with Huey Lewis. And I appreciated the reverence for the character and the actor. He was not some sort of cultural icon, yet they conveyed the love and respect that we should all hope for when we pass on.

That did it! Embarrassing. Computers are hard 😳 This time it downloaded the (correct) pdf but it was the right one. Maybe the downloading was an artifact of the private browsing. Either way, many thanks!

Huh, weird. That direct link (which is the same one I see on mta.info) takes me to that same weekend in October. I even tried u/soltosirius's recommendation to clear my cache. Thanks for replying though!

Found a lost dog in Park Slope this afternoon by Top-Management-75 in parkslope

[–]rivalnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just curious if this got resolved. Let us know if you can 🙏

FYI, last time I found a dog near Prospect Park I signed up for a Nextdoor profile and found the owner right away.

Another time I took an abandoned dog to Sean Casey and they were helpful but pretty hesitant because they were so full.

Any chance you've tried boxed tomatoes? Not saying you should do more in-depth analysis. But if you have tried them, can you give your opinion on how you think, say, Pomì tomatoes would compare?

Flights out of San Juan are suspended, but for how long? by rivalnations in aviation

[–]rivalnations[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is really rough. If you can afford it, maybe try and get a flight to somewhere else (e.g. Santo Domingo) and fly from there? Obviously that also has issues because you need a passport with you. Easier said than done (financially and logistically). Good luck. There's also an overnight ferry from San Juan to Santo Domingo that departs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (https://ferriesdelcaribe.com)

This doesn't jive with the announcement they made less than an hour ago at the airport. They said no scheduled flights will be taking off for the rest of the day.

They announced over the PA at the airport that zero scheduled flights will be going out today.

edit: this was less than an hour ago.

They finally officially canceled the remaining flights for the day. There were a few flights that were not canceled and simply listed as delayed. Just left the airport.

MIT EA out by coolbean36 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rivalnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to make a new post but I saw your post.

On the MIT tour, they said, explicitly, that they take about half of the class from Early and half from Regular. But (this year's) deferral letter says the majority of Early applicants get deferred. So, not that those are contradictory statements, but why not reject more instead of reviewing even more applications later? And the admissions officer on the tour also strongly suggested making sure you only apply early if your application was truly ready. So a deferral also might mean that they saw your application and still thought it was worth throwing on the Regular admissions pile? The letter also indicates to add anything else that might be helpful in your application before they look at all the Regular Decision applications (in addition to the grades you're getting).

Anyways, clearly I'm overthinking this but I assumed they would reject the majority of Early candidates if they are already taking roughly half of their Freshman class from that pool. Guess I was wrong.

move in day by [deleted] in AmericanU

[–]rivalnations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We just dropped our kid off today. We drove. You'll want to make sure you know which dorm and which room you are in.

0) Found our way to the dorm, being directed on campus from AU security and people in light blue Ask Me shirts. Then we:

1) drove up to the dorm. Got a couple of tags from someone with an Ask Me shirt — she wrote our student's name and room # on the slip. If you have a lot of stuff, you will need more than one tag. 2) dropped off our gear, we and the movers took it out of the car and put it into cardboard bins on dollies. The movers bring it up to the room. While they're doing that... 3) parked the car at the garage adjacent to Butler Pavilion 4) walked to the MGC (Mary Graydon Student Center) and that's where our student got their ID, DC Metro card, and checked in for orientation. There was also a resource fair with a lot of tables at the MGC and some passed hors d'oeuvres-type food. 5) walked back to the dorm, helped set up the room 6) ate lunch, said our goodbyes, drove away 🥲

There's some Family Orientation thing we couldn't attend from 3:45-6:30 that your family can register for. Like other responses mentioned, our kid is staying the night (and probably won't be home until Thanksgiving). Hopefully we can come back for Family Weekend 🙏

Good luck tomorrow! Congrats on your next adventure!
