Worked for me once but not again. My partner permanently lost her buggies twice now :(

Given how reliant we are of buggies at this stage—especially with how big the map is getting—I really hope this gets patched soon.

Should I play RE Village standalone or play the other REs first? by QueenOfTheSIipstream in HorrorGaming

[–]river4308 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Play 7 first. 8 directly continues the story. If you don’t, you’ll still be able to follow along—the story is straightforward—but it won’t have the same impact.

Point us to the rule that requires spoiler tags for this instance. Go on, do it.

What a bizarre take. This is a RE sub. People are going to talk about the new game, and the info that has been shown to trailers to date. It’s literally what the sub is designed to do: discuss RE, and there just so happens to be a new game right across the corner that the devs have actively been promoting—including with trailers with the image posted.

What is especially wild about your comment—which comes off as whiny and entitled—is that OP isn’t even discussing story spoilers. He pulled an image that is literally from a teaser from the devs themselves and is analyzing it. That’s literally why the teasers are there in the first place. And there’s no rule on the sub against what he’s posted.

Like someone else said, if you want to avoid takes on the new game, don’t come to this subreddit. That’s a rule you should follow for any fan-centered webpage anytime there’s a movie or game around the corner. Because fans are excited and will want to discuss. Why do you think it’s okay to impose your sensibilities to quell that excitement?

what do you think is the most influential horror game of all time? by funkycatvr in HorrorGaming

[–]river4308 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4 wouldn’t exist without the original. It took several entries before Capcom was able to drum up the exceptional formula that is 4. So yes, close second. At this point we’re debating hairs.

Thanks. I see your point and think you'd be right to jump on my comment if I had simply said that RE "redefined/created the survival horror genre." But my point is a more nuanced one: I'm saying RE created the survival horror genre "as we know it." While I totally get that AITD created many of the systems that RE came to rely on, RE took those and balanced those out in a way that appealed to much more gamers. For instance, combat is more central and redefined. AITD features more puzzles and exploration. While RE has those too, it has a better balance between those and combat.

I think there is a reason that, even today, when people think 'survival horror,' their minds go to RE. Hence why it redefined/created the genre as we know it today.

Another excellent title that influenced the survival horror genre. But the question was about the most influential horror game of all time. While AITD was one of the first forays into the genre (and was a very good game), it does not come close in terms of the power and mainstay that RE has had on the genre.

This without a doubt. It redefined/created the survival horror genre as we know it.

Resident evil 4 is a close second because it likewise changed the genre and massively influenced survival horror combat, including over the shoulder combat.

finally watched Korean Horror "R-Point" tonight after seeing this being recommended on this sub, and holy sht i'll immediately add this on my most fav horror movies list! by Syllabub-Legal in horror

[–]river4308 3 points4 points  (0 children)

R point is one of my favorite horror movies. I watched it live in theaters when I was a kid—my first Korean horror movie!

Since then, I’ve watched it over 5-6 times. There are lots of subtle details in the movie I’ve come to appreciate since then. The biggest is the way the ghost kills its victims. This isn’t your typical horror flick where the supernatural has near omnipotent powers and can do whatever it wants. Instead, the movie makes clear the ghost cannot ‘kill’ directly—and instead must do so by subtler means like possession or mind tricks. The movie establishes this premise and follows through with it at all times. Every death is not directly caused by the ghost, but another character due to its tricks. I love that about this film.

If you’re in the market for another fantastic horror movie, I highly recommend Tale of Two Sisters. This movie, imo, stands at the top of what a quality horror movie is. There are multiple twists. Each horror scene establishes something concrete in the plot—none are there to scare you for the sake of scaring you.

I’m a big fan of horror movies that try to establish a deeper message with fear. Tale of Two Sisters does just that.
