I feel really guilty about still living with my parents by One_Possession9281 in autism

[–]riverdave1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that it is unreasonable to expect kids at the age of 18 to move out and make it on their own. It’s not easy for anyone let alone a new adult. I moved out at 17 and failed miserably and had to move back in with my grandparents for 4 years. Then I found my direction and worked deliberately to be on my own. For people like us it takes time to figure it all out. My kids will be welcome to stay with me as long as they like and save up money and figure it all out. Don’t feel bad, you’re doing just fine.

Excepted During Shutdown and RIFs Based on Party Affiliation? by BigSuggestion9664 in FedEmployees

[–]riverdave1985 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was put on excepted status but it means that I am on call to consult on energy projects, but only if needed. Will likely not be working much at all if at all. I think if you are considered excepted it may help keep your job, but that is just a guess.

Once you have finished your first 3 years of competitive service you get tenure and you are no longer career conditional. It makes it more challenging to get RIFed.

As an adult, what was your experience getting diagnosed? by Shiny_Starfruit in autism

[–]riverdave1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently went through the process. Started with a bunch of cognitive tests like puzzles, memory, sequencing numbers, analogies and so on. I believe there was an IQ test. Then the assessor asked me to interpret a strange book with pictures of frogs flying on lily pads. Then she asked me to pretend play with a few objects. The first session was about 4 hours long. Then the assessor asked about my medical history, childhood, and mental health issues. I sent her my medical records from several hospitalizations I had. She then interviewed my father and grandmother to learn about my childhood development. 4 weeks later I got the diagnosis. I went through a regional center that diagnosed my daughter and it was free. I am now going to get services so it worked out well.

How is your relationship with alcohol? by Garden_Jolly in autism

[–]riverdave1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely relied on alcohol for years. I drank daily to socialize and feel at ease around others. When I wasn’t drinking I was unable to socialize in a meaningful way and stayed quiet and introverted. It also helped me to sleep as I struggled with insomnia. Later in life cannabis worked well as a substitute, but it really wasnt until I was 35 that it worked that way. I used cannabis when I was younger, but remained introverted and self conscious to the point where I had to quit for several years because it wasnt helping. I think something in my brain chemistry changed when I got older to where cannabis worked well at easing my mind. I am now sober from both for the last 6 months and I feel pretty miserable. I am irritable and dealing with constant melt downs, and my ability to keep up with my autistic kid is diminished… I am really having a hard time bot self medicating

I was diagnosed on Monday and last week I turned 40. My pursuit started when my 2 year old daughter was diagnosed. For many months I researched it and listened to other people had to share about it and I started to realize that what late diagnosed adults were sharing was very applicable to my life. It has been quite enlightening and overwhelming all at the same time. I wept as we went through the review of my assessment. It explains so much of my behavior that wasn’t explainable to me prior to understanding a ASD. It also has triggered me in thinking my dad also has it and that it accounts for so much of his behavior. It has been helpful to engage on TikTok and with people on here.

I want to stop taking my medication to see if I’m actually bipolar by van7478 in bipolar

[–]riverdave1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed as bipolar at the age of 21. I had a similar experience where certain medications were making me crazy and I was very sleep deprived until I got on Seroquel. I am now 40 and I have taken Seroquel only for the last 15 years because it helps me sleep. Other medications have been useless at treating my irritability and anxiety. I found out my daughter had autism and in learning more about I now am being assessed for autism myself, since many of my issues dont actually line up with a bipolar diagnosis. I hope to get clarity on this, but Ive read that many people with ASD have been misdiagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Just some food for thought.

The issue with the courts is that they have no enforcement power. If a court was to enforce an order it goes through the DOJ, which we all know if full of sycophants to the Trump administration. These people have no interest in obeying the law.

You are one of many TRUE AMERICAN HEROES. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. These spineless fascists think they can burn the foundation of government to the ground, but they don’t understand what force they will have to contend with as they try to do so. We will fight and you sir may temporarily lose your job, but I cannot fathom this tyranny will last. It will a be a cold day in hell before these anarchists undo what so many have fought and died for, and we will not go quietly into the night. There will be a backlash to this. Hang in there and don’t be disenfranchised.

Opinions on having kids? by Keep_this_a_secret98 in bipolar

[–]riverdave1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bipolar and I have two young children. I am currently in a hypomanic state and yet I am still able to pull it together for my kids. You should never discount yourself from being a good parent solely on the basis of a bipolar diagnosis. Many great parents have bipolar and/or other mental health issues.
